I could use some help still, I can't figure out how to access a lot of avatars, so I decided to run around as an angry meerkat with a Darth Vader cape on until I can make one of the hyena ones work.

No (paying grants you access to some functions like buying land), and while Linden Dollars used to buy stuff have real-world value, there's stuff available for free of charge too.

I just went there. There use to be one but apparently something ate it because its gone now, along with the gator on the beach. What a bummer. It was pretty cool.
