The trachea and esophagus are the same for the upper portion of the throat. Can't breath with one's throat full of prey! Snakes have an extensible glottis that allows them to breathe while swallowing prey, but that doesn't work for mammals. We tend to ignore this in vore because it's inconvenient and gets in the way of fun scenes, but the short version is, breathing through the nose doesn't help. 83

The usual approach is either not to mention the issue at all or to have the pred or narrator mention how difficult it is to breathe, which is the approach Fidchell used.

It does get tedious when you try to make critters that by all rights not be swallowing people do it "realistically", so I have no problem with shortcuts like just not mentioning it.

Well, the fact we feel we cannot breath at the point of the very swallow reflex, is that it is the very own body creating enclosing of vacuum perfeciency- it is the same like if you'd want to sneeze with open eyes, no reason not to, but you just cannot. When Purna is dragging poor prey down her throat, and her lungs start inhaling, the air will simply pass the poor prey body, whaether deforming the prey body to some extent, or in case of prey being impossibly stiff, her throat would conform to that- body does what you want/need. Purna will not be able to breath only at the final "glk", but that is the point when prey's been sent through throat totaly, being gulleted. And then considering the fact that Purna has a gulletted jaw, anything is a gulpie for terrible Purna!
