Interesting Pattern

Permanent Linkby marloweny on Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:54 pm

It is slowly becoming apparent to me that almost all of the stories I write that have any substance tend to be about two women falling in love. I may be incapable of writing a really interesting male character.

Well, there's really nothing wrong with that.

It seems to me, that you've found your niche. I would just embrace it, but what do I know; I'm just a fool who thinks she has valuable insight and talent when the reality is, that I am expendable.

Personally, I don't see the problem here. :)

I have the same pattern - I can’t say it’s a flaw though, it’s just where my interests lie.

I find the same pattern myself (just wrote about that scenario, actually). If I ask myself "why" I end up with this chain:

  1. I tend to include unbirth in most of the stories I write.
  2. Unbirth is naturally female-dominant and that tends to be an element in these stories.
  3. A relationship between two women is a relationship of equals. It has more interesting dynamics because neither partner is just naturally in charge of the other.
  4. Male/female relationships tend to be temporary in worlds where unbirth exists, for obvious reasons. Female/female relationships can be permanent.
Usually, most of my female characters are bisexual (and often polyamorous) simply because they can be: they're often willing to take on male partners (temporarily) while still remaining committed to each other (permanently).
