Artist Woes

Permanent Linkby Chameleonette on Sun Mar 09, 2014 10:12 pm

I just really hate that feeling that I can never measure up to artists that can doodle something wonderful in like, 10 minutes and it can be completely messy with color-bleeding everywhere and scribbly lines, and not even something I spent hours upon hours creating and edging down to smooth lines and coloring can ever compare.

Where does that magic happen? Where can I find it? Why do I lack it in the first place?

Yeah, I know. It's a talent. But it's incredibly frustrating when you feel like you can't measure up even slightly to something that someone else just calls "a doodle", "trash", "junk", "crap", "something to delete later", "oh god this is so bad", etc.

I wouldn't let it worry you, your art is plenty amazing, you have a unique style that is refreshing to see, I can see that you put a lot of effort into your works, because it shows in the quality of your pieces. Don't be disheartened by it, instead embrace your own works and just continue to improve your style, you don't lose out on quality in the slightest in my book.

In my opinion, it's not always that another artists' sketches are inherently better than your own, but that age-old "own worst critic" element coming into play; granted, when I see sketch artists doing amazing work, it usually shows a familiarity with their subject, be it anatomy or what-have-you. (I can do some really clean lineart myself, but it takes me hours of drawing, redrawing, and cleaning. I'm most certainly not in that "comfortable sketches" category yet.)

"Talent is a pursued interest. In other words, anything you're willing to practice, you can do."

Bob Ross says it quite nicely, I think. There's no point in comparing yourself to other artists when they haven't had the same exact practice as you have. Just to put things in perspective, I look at your art with the same exact set of eyes; I can't draw like that, not without piles of reference and, more often then not, some of my 3D models to use as guides. I have my own strengths too, though (that 3D work being one).
Comparing yourself to an artist who is already better than you can be as bad as comparing your age to someone five years your senior. They're always going to be five years older than you! Don't let that take away from the fact that you're getting older just the same as they are, and you're older than a lot of other people already, too. Age isn't a perfect example; different artists "age" at different rates, depending on how much they practice and how easily they absorb new skills. But you shouldn't be expecting to wizz past someone else who's practicing just like you are, they're still growing too.

As a quick aside, "this is just something crappy I made" comments and the likes are a huge peeve of mine, haha. It's the reverse of the folks that put themselves down by leaving comments like "I could never do anything this nice". It's not easy to ignore, but try not to let their careless comments about their own work have any bearing on your own.

Experience is where I have found the biggest differences here. The young woman that draws all my Im'Rhys artwork for instance, AndromedaRejects. She can hammer out a rough human(oid) sketch in less than ten minutes (I've watched her do it), but she has been drawing, even if just doodling, every day for years.

I feel the same way when someone talks about "hammering out" 1k, 3k word short story in thirty minutes, no proof reading, and BAM post it, and the damned thing looks better than a story I spent a week on, edited and proof read five, six times along the way.

Some people just got the gift for quick work that doesn't look rushed. Don't let it bring you down. It just is what it is. Lean on your strengthens and turn your weaknesses into strengths. It takes times and immense amounts of practice and intensive effort.

AndromediaRejects used to give all her characters claws instead of hands, because she could not draw hands nor fingers. Now she draws assassins with guns in their hands in action poses. Practice makes perfect, even if annoying and depressing as all hell at times, lol.
"Mmmm," Purple eyes stare enviously at a young woman's chest. "I might have to borrow that..."

A bit later as whimpers of despair fade, Im'Rhys admires her newest bewb job, "Ooooh, these look so much better on me."

Yeah, I know that we're our "own worst critic" and all of that, but it's still something that gets me down sometimes. I do draw a lot - a hell of a lot. And even in the case of my own work, generally the things that are sketches are what people like more than the stuff the slaved over coloring and fixing up to be much more presentable.

I'm just not exactly sure where I should go with it all. I love sketching, but I also like coloring things. I do some of both, but I just can't crank out art as fast as most people. Part of that is due to having Carpal Tunnel issues and a wrist brace, but that's another can of worms.

I just haven't found my groove, even though I've been drawing almost religiously since I was in middle school.

I would assume it'd have something to do with OCD.

I do this a lot with my art too. I'm my own worse critic to the point where I'm a perfectionist with everything and even the slightest mistake drives me bonkers. However, the reason why I beat myself up is because I know I can do better and I'm pushing myself to improve. Without my constant nagging at myself, I don't think I would've grown as much as a digital artist.
