Great News!!

Permanent Linkby Chameleonette on Fri Jan 23, 2015 1:29 pm

After filing my 2014 taxes, as it turns out...

My art commission money from last year didn't wind up with payable taxes! I make such a ridiculously small amount of money with shitty hours at my job that the added commission money didn't get me anywhere near the bar for having to pay back to state or federal.

So... you know what this means, right? I'm going to be gearing up to re-vamp and re-open commissions in February! Now that I can be sure it doesn't end up with me paying it back to the government, I feel better about taking commissions. And that means commissions will be open again at some point in February! (I'm not sure of the exact date yet, but it'll probably be early in the month!)

This was such great news, seriously. I've been worrying about it since last year when my sis-in-law told me that taxes are really hard on commission artists. But I guess because her husband makes a lot of money, that's the difference. I make table scraps and therefore I didn't get a penalty for taking commissions. Yay!

I don't know if people who put in reserves for commissions still want their spots from last year or not, but if you'd like to reserve a spot, you're more than welcome to! I can guarantee now that they WILL be opening!

This is the only time someone can be happy that their job has crappy pay rate.

Haha, yeah. The best way I could think of to put was, it's great, but in a sad kind of way. XD;; At least I know I have pretty big margins for how many commissions I can take before I reach that line.

Actually once you know how the law and paperwork work, it isn't so bad. It just is harder than basic taxes, that's all.

BTW, I strongly recommend finding out what the bottom tax bracket is where you live, state and federal, and squirrel away that much on your own from each commission, that way when taxes time comes around you are not blind sided and need to come up with it all at once, and since this is what they do with your taxes from a regular job it is just called tax withholdings, this should not be particularly painful.

And... It means you get to have savings at the end of each year when they DON'T take any taxes from your commission work :)))
"Mmmm," Purple eyes stare enviously at a young woman's chest. "I might have to borrow that..."

A bit later as whimpers of despair fade, Im'Rhys admires her newest bewb job, "Ooooh, these look so much better on me."

@Imrhys - It was included in my basic taxes, actually. So it was a lot easier than I expected it to be.

As for tax brackets, I'm not going to worry about that. They gave me a number for up to what my bar was and I'm way below that number, so I don't feel I'd have any chance of getting that high even if I took commissions non-stop this year. I'm seriously well below poverty level. I don't think they actually CAN tax my earnings much.
