Microsoft Surface Pro 2?

Permanent Linkby Chameleonette on Wed Sep 09, 2015 3:27 pm

Does anyone here use a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 for art?

My tablet monitor (Yiynova MSP19U) has been really annoying lately and I'm super-frustrated with the fact that I can't do lineart on it (too jittery). It's OK for coloring, but it's becoming more and more of a hassle to do art with it and I have to scan all the lineart in separately to use, which is a pain in the neck.

I'm considering saving up for a Surface Pro 2. I've heard and read good things about it. But does anyone have firsthand experience with how it works for art? (IE: Pen sensitivity, flow, usability, compatibility with art programs, etc.)

It's going to still be quite awhile before I can afford one, since I have to make over $700 worth of commission money first, but I'm badly in need of an upgrade in the tablet area and I'm trying to find the best choices. I'm also hoping it can double as a back-up computer in some ways, too, since my current machine is over 6 years old and really showing its age.

Any and all input would be appreciated. Thank you!

I'm looking for the type of tablet where you draw on the screen, though. I can't use the other kind. Thanks anyway, though!

I don't own one but I do keep up on tech hardware.

The Pro 2 is not bad for drawing with the bigger screen but the input will be about the same as your tablet.
I would go for the Pro 3 with improved touch screen and smart pen.

Here is a review for Pro 3: http://www.tested.com/tech/pcs/463471-t ... ace-pro-3/
They may be tech guys but they liked the input responsiveness when note taking with the pen.

Thanks a lot for the input and information!

I think the Pro 3 is a bit too far out of my comfort zone, financially. I found Pro 2 for just over $700, but they want $1370 for the same thing with Pro 3. As much as I'd like to hold out, I can't realistically make that kind of money. I don't get enough hours at my job and I can't imagine the amount of art commissions I would have to take to get there. I need something a bit more realistic for my budget.

I'll keep it in mind, though, if a miracle ever decides to drop down upon me. Hahaha.

Ok, I'll do some digging on what tablets are good for drawing since most good tablets cost less then $500.

I have the surface pro 2, and use it for art.
Most recently, I worked on illustrations for a recently-released (Sept 2) book, and I used the Surface to run Photoshop CC2014, using the technology preview for tablets (which enlarges the icons).

What I can say about it is this:
The pen accuracy on the Surface Pro 2 is something to be concerned about, but there's a fix. Microsoft teamed up with Wacom for the Pro 1 and Pro 2, and the calibration on Wacom devices is always notoriously off near the edges and corners. This is usually more than compensated for in Wacom tablets by the incredible responsiveness, pressure sensitivity, and tilt/rotation sensitivity, and by the large bezel around the screens which make the issue disappear. On the Surface, however, there are no tilt/rotation sensitivity, fewer pressure levels, and no large screen bezel, making it nearly impossible to click the [X] in the corner of a window, and difficult to click the File menu. This inaccuracy can be mostly fixed, however, by using a crazy 100 point calibration grid technique and bypassing the default method. The surface Pro 3 partnered with a different tech provider which supplied similarly adequate pen responsiveness and pressure levels without the calibration problems.

The screen on the Surface Pro 2 is quite small, even running PS in tablet mode. I am a person who zooms in and out a lot, but even still, the work space felt very cramped.

Running Photoshop will cut battery life a decent bit, but overall, the software does run pretty smoothly, even with print resolution files. The gfx driver restarted on me very occasionally, which then required a PS restart (zoom behaviors and stuff revert back to the old way when the gfx card cuts out). It was very, very handy for editing on-the-go (I had some very condensed deadlines for various phases of the project), but I was glad to have my desktop and an Intuos tablet to go back to.

Have you considered the new Lenovo Yoga 15?
It's quite new, quite impressive, and quite competitively priced--about half of a new Surface Pro 3.

Edit: Miracles-wise, if you're ever interested in creating a dealer for my voreish Blackjack game (Ultimate Blackjack thread over in Vore Games), I'm always looking to line up artists for expansions... Commission typically runs 300-700 depending on artist/work agreed to/time frame ;D Could give more details if interested!

Hmm, interesting. Thanks for the information. The Lenovo does look pretty promising, but it's also very expensive and not that much cheaper than a Surface Pro 3. Maybe I can find some way to fix my Yiynova MSP19U to work properly. But I swear I've gotten rid of any Wacom drivers on my system, disabled and did away with AVG before I installed it, and 2 years later it still won't work properly. I'm not sure what's wrong, because it has rave reviews and I really like the feel of it. I just can't do lineart on it because of the jitter issues, which defeats half the purpose of having a tablet monitor in the first place. I'd just hate to think I spent almost $600 for nothing.

Your offer for commissions sounds interesting, as well, but I don't know if I really have the time to devote to images for games and I have no experience in that area of graphical work. I appreciate the offer nonetheless, though.

Thanks for the link. I'm pretty much familiar with everything listed there. (The one I own is the Yiynova MSP19U, which has nice reviews, but I haven't been able to get mine to work properly for almost 3 years now, including all of their suggestions for "fixes" to make it work. If it weren't for the jitter, it would be a fantastic tablet monitor. I really like the feel of it.)

It's nice to have the price range on hand, though. Much appreciated~
