Is this Chao...an old hat?

Posted by Requiem 17 years ago

I'm just wondering if I've had my stride. I know that there aren't many artists out there that do vorish fanart of anime/older cartoons, but the question is, is it "right"? I mean, I enjoy what I draw, sure, even the Tails pics, but a few discussions arose between myself and a few friends, specifically on the use of certain characters as preds/prey. Also, a few of the images/sequences I'm particularly proud of...haven't gotten the responses that I had hoped.

Hey, change never hurts. Maybe a few more tutorials, or hell, different characters will give you a new perspective. It takes some getting used to, but after you've dominated a field (not claiming I have), you just have to try something new. It never hurts to bring new things into the fold, at the very least... it keeps things interesting. You've done so much work with your characters, and the characters of others, that it may seem a bit... lackluster for the time being. Try something else, and then come back. That's my advice, anyway.

I've done my share of celebrity pics. Its never the
ones I expect to get a response that do... Celeb or
non... :P

Why? Who knows. I do know though that expecting
responses from the viewers is a foolish notion on my
own or anyone elses part. They just usually dont.
For myriad reasons.
You'll usually end up with a stable of regulars. But
dont even count on that.

Just draw and know that people like your stuff.
I tend to use the hits counter on pieces as a semi-
indicator of a pieces success. But even thats mis-
leading.

And if your pic happens to fall into calumn 4 of the
folder then all bets are off. People miss column 4
in the folders alot as it is for many pushed off the
side of the screen and easily missed.

Alot of factors play. So as said.
Just draw as long as you enjoy it (and or a person
comissioning/requesting a piece does.)

The question of whether it's 'right' seems kind of a strange one.

No, there really is nothing wrong with it. You're not producing what you do for anything remotely resembling a profit, and it's not as though the subjects are in some way sacred, things that shouldn't be drawn. 'Old' characters from any source, especially a childhood source, are often important things to us once we've grown older, because the grip they once had over our thoughts and our imaginations really never goes away.

Just by depicting them in some situation or other, you're not devaluing or harming anyone else's perception or view of the characters; Heaven knows there's a few thousand fanfictions out there that depict characters you like in ways that you don't like, but they don't reflect upon your own enjoyment of them. It's just as within your rights to portray them in what situations you choose to, for the pleasure of yourself and for those others who appreciate them in the same way that you do.

I can't comment much on the reactions you have or haven't received on other pieces, but... as for what's right or wrong, there's nothing that isn't 'right' about your own actions. Keep on doing what it feels good to do; just because someone else can't fully appreciate what you create doesn't mean you're 'old hat' or that your contributions are any less admirable.

Hope you find the answers you're looking for.

I'll comment on the thing about responses, as the idea of drawing new things is completely up to you, though I honestly love it, I just love your style, so I'd like anything, no matter what you draw really.

I think it has more to do with the deluge of pics you do. I look at your updates, and they're like 20 pics all at once. Now, I don't draw or write, so the only thing I can contribute is comments every once in awhile. The problem with the way you update is, well, I'd feel wierd if I only posted a response to a few of my fav pics you do, and not others, as I like almost all of them equally. So at that point, it's either writing 20 different comments, and to me it just feels, well, disingenuine if I do(I feel that way anyway, then again, I'm wierd like that), or not, and lately I've been erring on the side of, well, laziness on my part. The last time you did a major update, I posted a thread in your forum, and like that day, there was another database error with the site, and the thread poofed, so I stopped doing that altogether.

I'm not sure why I feel it wierd if I reply way too much to too many images at once, but that's me. Just know that all your pics are greatly greatly appreciated, and loved by me. If you feel the need to draw different things now, hey, go for it, I have little doubt I'll enjoy them any less. :)

To get to more of the point of the responses without my incoherent rambling, I think you'd honestly get more responses if you released a few pics every now and then, instead of like 16 all at once. :)

The problem is, I don't draw only "a few pics now and then". I tend to sketch every good idea I get as soon as I have time and privacy. Because I sketch at work, my speed has increased along with my skill, and I tend to do a clean sketch in 15-45 min.

As far as uploading is concerned, I'm lazy. I don't want to upload 1 or 2 images at a time, which is why I tend to do monthly updates, and why I prefer Eka's over any other artsite. This probably won't change anytime soon...

I'm not looking for comments on every work I do. If you have one you really like though, say so. That at least shows me that I'm doing something right.

Requiem, look at me ^_^' first of all your work is cute, even if stretchy vore is not my thing, but you got skills and a very good style :) the content doesn't really count if it's good art it's good art :P also, you aren't the one who gets a few comments. I think the best amount of comments that I took on a single pic was 4, at least here...but I just take that not many people like macro vore or my unusual, oftenly cute preds, or perhaps my style ^^' what i can tell you is that you have to go ahead, because your style is growing and getting better each day :) I'll do the same, just trying to make some macro vore fan peek out of the closet and begin to draw with us :3 that's what I wish to do with my macro/vore art, to share the love for macro art and showing that vore can be cute :P
