yeah hi trans chick here i'm late to the bad idea party but what's another penny thrown into the fray
i'm not gonna delve into what word is best or worst for dames and gents and whoevs with unusual protrusions of flesh betwixt their nethers because frankly nobody agrees on any definition for, like, futa and herm and all that shit. i'm just going to say that trans should really only be used to describe a character's history
i wish there were a single concise, pleasant term for chicks with solely dicks regardless of origin (our counterparts the vagentlemen seem to me to have that much better off) but i ain't gotta clue what ought to be used there

While there are terms that SHOULD exist for futa/herm/etc because they ARE different than trans characters, those words specifically fetishize trans people and also aren't very nice words in general (cuntboy? dickgirl? really?). Also herm is a scientifically inaccurate term anyway.

I just use Futa cause it's what I'm used to. I use trap for feminized boys. People are going to be offended by anything ya use so it doesn't really matter in the end.

That's how you and a few other people see it but I disagree. I've never really seen it used in a derogatory or offensive manner.

it literally describes trans people as "tricking" people into thinking they're the opposite gender. and yes, i've seen it used in a derogatory manner multiple times

Eh well I don't use it like that. There are plenty of people who are offended by the use of Trans in fetish based materials as well. You're never going to please everyone.I like the term and don't take offense. Looking at it I suppose I am thinking of my own personal tastes. not all Traps are trans. and not all trans are traps. But all the girly boys I use are definitely traps.

I honestly think it's just used wrongly by most people. A trap should be a cis boy who's crossdressing or girly (or a vice versa for reverse traps, a cis girl who's just manly and crossdressing). Trans women aren't guys, so being a trap is something they just can't be. Being a woman and dressing in woman's clothes/appearing as a woman does not a trap make.
On the herm issue, I don't use it for humans cause intersex and complete hermaphroditism are kinda different, but for characters who are, by nature of their species or just through other means, complete hermaphrodites with both sets of sexual organs (and both being able to be used for reproduction) there's not really a better word for it? Intersex wouldn't apply to species that just all are like that, after all, so herm is the most applicable term really.
(Speaking as a non-cis person here, by the way)

I'll say it every time this topic comes up: Traps aren't trans people, traps are guys who crossdress. Using the term trap for a trans person is not just a dick move but factually incorrect.

It doesn't matter who you use it for. The innate meaning of the word implies that whoever it's applied to is tricking people or being deceitful by their appearance - which both isn't true and is very dehumanizing.

Sometimes it IS used to intentionally trick people. Characters can crossdress purposefully to appear as a different gender, calling them a trap in that situation seems fairly accurate.

That's your opinion. There are plenty of traps who enjoy the term and don't feel dehumanized at all. https://old.reddit.com/r/traps/ !(NSFW)! currently has 121,944 users that obviously aren't offended and post plenty of their own bodies for admiration and enjoyment. It is not a slur.

speaking as a male here with no transgender background. and I couldn't agree more. so far all the terms I've heard used before sound... well, almost insulting. honestly trans is the only one that doesn't sound so bad, and that's only because it instead sounds more like a medical term. the way I see it, someone should come up with a simplistic, pleasant sounding term to be used for woman who happen to have a penis.
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

Re: We should tag 'futa' and 'herm' as Transgender instead!
Futa, herm and transgender are entirely different things what even is the reason for this post?
Futa: A character who is bioligically a girl that somehow has a penis from birth (or magic and shit it's just a fantasy thing, sometimes they even have vaginas too)
Herm: Someone with both a vagoo and a peepee
Trans: Someone who sees themselves as a different gender than they were born with
I don't know what kind of backwards logic made you think all 3 are the same thing but whatever.

A hermaphrodite is someone that was born with both parts genetically. Hermaphrodites do exist, but it's a rare genetic disorder. A transgender is someone who identifies with a different gender than they are born with. As far as I know, futa is a fantasy thing, but I could be wrong? Either way, they are all different.
Also, no need to be hard on anyone who doesn't get all this. It can be really confusing once we get past male and female genders.
Finally, one umbrella term for anyone outside of male or female is androgynous which is what the OP is looking for. That would be a great tag to use for artists or writers with such characters.

changing the name from something gross to something progressive doesn't change the underlying fact that the characters are fetishised. Don't get me wrong I understand your sentiment, it hurts to see these gross words everywhere but-In practise I don't think it solves any problems (besides being Slightly less uncomfortable)
tbh for me it's also a case of it helps me sort out if someone is a freak or asshole quicker as well

Re: We should tag 'futa' and 'herm' as Transgender instead!
With how many creators design their characters, the term transgender is incorrect. For example, my harpy has a dick and a vagina. That is the way she was born. Therefore she is a hermaphrodite. She did not transition one way or another, therefore forcing a tag change for her case would be factually incorrect. If a character has different sexual organs than the norm by birth, they're not a transgender, they're an atypical gender.
And, you can argue terms being hurtful or not, but it boils down that this is a fetish site where people fantastically eat other people and worse. There is a wall between what we do in fantasy, and what we do in reality. And a lot of things are on case by case basis on top of that. Not all people view terms the same, and it's dangerous to take a puritanical view on muddy waters.

Just checking back on whether the dead horse has been slain yet, considering the thread's OP is probably overwhelmed by the backlash we've all caused.
Good.
Allow me to rejoin this beating for a bit. So let's just all agree on terminology.
Cis:
You agree with the gender you're born with.
Trans:
You prefer to identify as a different gender. Whether or not anything's been physically changed doesn't actually play into this.
Trap:
Cross-dresser aiming to appear as the opposite gender.
Hermaphrodite:
Intersex, sexual traits of both. Some people prefer Intersex.
Futanari:
Actually a hermaphrodite in Japanese, but has, mainly through porn, increasingly been made to mean a girl with a dick. This perception is so common, it might as well mean it in English as a loan word.
Newhalf:
Actually a hermaphrodite in Japanese, and can also mean someone who is trans who has undergone the change into having a new half. But has, mainly through porn, increasingly been made to mean a girl with a dick and no vagina, but the west hasn't necessarily caught up to this and will probably call it a futanari regardless of vagina presence, depends on community, really, it's all a chaotic mess of foreign terminology coming in and people establishing uses of words. That's how language is formed, people.
Sequential Hermaphroditism:
The thing where in a species, gender is something that just changes through the course of their lives or depending on conditions. Knowledge of this makes Finding Nemo weird. You're welcome.
Tags:
Things that need to define what they are meant to in a clear fashion in a way that is widely understandable by the local audience using them by priority of creator intent then actual display, and using clear and traditional tags whenever possible. Please do not screw with them unnecessarily.
OP:
Either a very successful troll at this point, or in for a lot of disappointment that hopefully will school their character and prevent misunderstandings and/or pressing personal fetish agendas on others.
Clip:
An ammunition clip is a device used to store individual rounds of ammunition together as a single unit that is then ready for insertion into the magazine of a gun.
Magazine:
A magazine is a device or chamber for holding a supply of cartridges to be fed automatically to breech of a gun.
Asshole:
The type of person required to correct people on the use of the terms clip or magazine in a situation where no misunderstanding is possible.
Good.

yes the characters are fetishized, though that's another word where there's a divide on what precisely it means; it's just another instance of an older generation wielding it in rhetoric with a contextually-specific definition and then never writing down what it actually meant to them, leaving us to fill the definition in ourselfs. is all sexual portrayal of dames with dongs or gents with 'ginas fetishization to you or are there other factors to consider? and then you have to ask yourself why fetishization is bad. it's a fuckin rabbit hole and i so love it
'cause i don't see anyfin wrong with getting off to the meat frame once you cut all that fatty, greasy context and implication. flesh is flesh is flesh is flesh, and oft i want my flesh shaped like this or that-- question i answer is seldom "if" or "if not" but "how much" and "how many"
