Any Suggestions on Text Adventure Programs?

Postby RogueKnight (mention) » Thu Aug 20, 2026 4:17 pm

I've been considering trying something new in creating a vore-based text adventure, perhaps something like Meadows Mansion or SMVA. I think I'd be looking for something that could give me a feel for the process, maybe that allows me to identify features/mechanics that are feasible vs what may be too ambitious or just not worth the hassle. Probably relatively inexpensive if its something subscription based or free if qol isn't too much of an issue.

The two that I've seen most often for vore text adventures are Twine (which I use) and Quest. I dabbled in Quest and I personally find Twine more liberating and beginner-friendly. However, I've played some excellent Quest games and I'd say it gives a better sense of location than Twine - it's easier to have expansive maps and layouts without players getting confused. It also seems to have inbuilt inventory mechanics, which Twine doesn't have.

Feel free to check out one of my games for what Twine is capable of from a reasonable beginner: https://aryion.com/g4/view/1233341 (not my first game, but I've got no other coding experience)

I can find and link you to a Quest game if you're struggling to find an example, though I'd be surprised, as in my experience it's the most common vore interactive format.

If you wanted to try your hand at the classic style IF ... you could also look into Inform 7 ... but the learning curve of that is wicked.

Twine works smoothly on virtually every modern device with no setup, the same can't be said for like... everything else, as far as I know. Quest works on mobile browsers but barely.

Yes I ended up using Inform 7 for the singular text adventure I made, but I'm not sure how that compares to the two you mentioned in the original post. Inform 7 is definitely for an older style of text adventure (of the style like VERB THE NOUN), but it does not strictly have to be like that either. As for platforms, it can work on just about anything.

Quest's inventory system is surprisingly versatile and can be jury-rigged into a system of belly containers with prey objects (if you feel like fussing with a little bit of code). I haven't completed any games in it yet but between it and Twine it's the one I prefer. I also use Ren'Py because I'm a masochist and I don't recommend that unless you're insane like me (between the built in Ren'Py code and Python it's basically trying to code a game in two languages at once, but you can do a lot of really cool things with it.)
