intestinal tract

Postby crystal » Wed Sep 19, 2007 8:40 pm

Hi, I was wondering about my intestines today (I'm a girl if you didn't know that) and I could feel the meal I had eaten last night all day as it passed through until it reached the end of the line. The food has since passed from my body but I was just wondering, how far can the intestinal walls stretch to allow a meal to pass though them?

My dinner last night was rather large (probably more than I ever should have eaten) and I know my intestines were overworked due to the fact that I could feel my food the whole way through, but I was just wondering if anyone knew how far they can stretch...

thanks,

Well in my opinion its not how much the intestines can hold but more so the stomach. The stomach contols how much food enters the intestines. So my guess is when you feel full till the verge of throwing up, thats how much your intestines can hold, just as much as your stomach can.

I agree with Ajax; the stomach limits how much gets into the intestines, haha so it's not like you're going to overwork your intestines. As far as them stretching, well when things go into them, it's pretty much liquid by then so they don't need to stretch much.

I concur with SD, this thread is highly beneficial to the community :) .

Umm...I have no idea about that...interesting that you could feel it this time and not others...so, yeah. Until we discover the answer, you should keep us well-informed about your intestines ;) .

thanks everybody. I never expected people to answer me. :-D

I kinda get it now and I suppose that the stomach does have a lot to do if not all with how much gets to my intestines.

I can kinda feel what I had last night wiggling around in there...its more towards the back door though

You want long?!? Or big?!? One lung is good enough when unraveled(because its like a crumpled piece of paper) to cover half a tennis court!

And yes the stomach controls how much goes in, but the anus is a different story. With a broken pelvis you can fit alot in there.

Long- include the small intestine and the large intestine
This is a qute from wiki: "the small intestine is the first and longest, measuring 6-8 metres (22-25 feet) on average in an adult man.
Shorter and relatively stockier the large intestine measuring roughly 1.5 metres (5 feet) on average"

i think they have some stretch if anything just so gasses can move about as digestion along the whole line has gasses.

id imagine though if your story had the prey surviving their trip they would have to be no taller then 1.5in to not clog up the works enroute to the Anus.

You'd probably have to eat easily digestible stuff so your stomach wouldn't work n it for long, and be in a constant state of eating. Even then, there would be gaps, because I think the average stomach allows food into the intestines once every 15-20 minutes.

I'm getting that feeling right now , why is it always felt when heading towards my "back door"? Not as much in middle of my small intestine.
