Tobuka Islands - Pathfinder IC thread (CLOSED)

Postby Zephyr42 » Fri Dec 16, 2016 4:13 pm

Off in the Great Western Sea, there sit the Tobuka Islands. A chain of islands numbering over two thousand, sized from barely a rock to almost a continent, stretched out over a circle 15 million square miles. The most peculiar thing about these islands, as discoverer G'ruk Chill found, was that these islands could have a wildly different climate from one to the next. One island could have a forest, the next could have barren desert. An island overcrowded with mushrooms could be within sight of a massive crystal. In one case, he'd even found an active volcano and a tundra sharing the same space. He had no idea what to make of it.

Except that all of it was his.

That was 1500 years ago. Since then, settlers, opportunists, vagabonds, and all kinds of people have made their way to the island. While towns have only sprouted up on about two hundred of the islands, what has sprouted up has flourished at an amazing rate. Now, the Tobuka Federation is in an age of good feelings. The settled islands have everything that a burgeoning colony could want: mineable ores, fertile land, clean water, everything. The sea between the islands remains peaceful, and ships can cross without fear of being sunk or raided by pirates. Discovery thrives, the gods are pleased, all is well.

Or rather, it was...

Earthquakes, once uncommon, have started to occur every other day. Thankfully, they're only minor tremors, but the rest is worse. Ships have started to go missing, just plucked from the sea. People on land, likewise, have started to vanish. And through it all, the islands are starting to grow, even the ones that the tide had previously been shrinking. Action is called for.

<**>
Cast:

<**>

You all start in the small town of Shrikeslee-on-the-Reef, on the green island of Redscale. It's a small fishing village set on one of the smaller islands to the east. Though not very noteworthy, their catches include the rare Ruby Sole, a flat fish with a distinctive dark red color whose likeness is spread all over the docks. The docks and harbor, made from dark grey stone panels (some painted Ruby Sole red), are rather extensive and extend quite a ways out into the water to try and catch all of the boats that they can. Connecting the walkways are stalls where fish are hung up and where sailors can get a bite to eat. The smell is suprisingly pleasant, thanks to the extensive cooking.

Further inland are the buildings for permanent residents. While the beach is unsettled, up a short cobblestone path is the town itself, laid out on a massive grass field. Most of the houses are made out of light-colored wood, topped with slate shingles, and containing shuddered windows without any glass. However, easily visible further up at the top of the hill is the massive governor's mansion. That whole affair is made out of colored red brick, with glass windows tinted in various colors and a massive flagpole bearing a red flag with the picture of a black-and-white shrike: the emblem of Redscale Island and its chief town.

Normally, people would be out and about in the nearby forests or busy in the various buildings in town. Today, though, a loud BONNNNNNNNG can be heard every few seconds. Thus, the people are gathering in the town square, near a stone stage at the base of a tall open tower containing a massive iron bell. While the chief cleric, a stocky black oread in yellow robes, has arrived, (he is in fact the one ringing the bell), the governor herself has yet to make an appearance. Thus, the people around have started to talk about this and that, the disaster, local business, all the while waiting for the important meeting to begin.

(The town square is attached. If you'd like to post a picture for me to use in your tokens, that'd be quite useful.)

Ter’ra Delmar would be following the crowd to the town center, curious as to the cause of the tolling bells. Her red eyes are flinching, the overwhelming light of the day-sun causing her to try and avert her gaze. Having lived and grown up underground, the intense light on the surface would be something the drow would likely never get used to. She decides to go to an alleyway between a couple buildings, casting a penumbra cantrip, a dark haze coming over her vision as she walks back out into the wider crowd. She stands very tall, even for a drow, which may put some nearby in a state of unease. She knew her appearance was a bit disconcerting: she has learned from those on the surface the reputation her kind has as slavers and depraved cultists. This reputation disappoints her, though upon reflection she definitely agreed that the traditions of her people were brutal and fundamentally wrong in some way.

She takes a look at the high cleric with a little bit of disdain. Though the faiths of the underdark were brutal and overbearing, the faiths of the overworld were almost equally insistent on their worship. She was viewed as a creature of evil, and had been confronted with requests of conversion, but remained silently against such a thought. The curiosity was why the town was being called to attention, and why the governor was not the one calling the meeting.

Lang 'sits' toward the back of the crowd. It's a courtesy matter toward smaller races. Even while resting on her haunches like she is she still 'stands' above many races on her forelegs. Plenty enough for the dragonic woman to see and hear what's going on once something starts to happen. But as nothing continues to happen she just makes small talk with some nearby members of the larger races when the bell isn't cutting them off.

Quite a fine example of her race, seen often enough in such coastal villages like these that there are a few families of them about. Her lower body strongly invoking feelings of 'dragon' and covered in vibrant green scales. Lang herself possess a rather sleek build for the most part. With one eye catching and for many (in)conveniently eye level exception, her breasts are enormous. Not even the modest clothing she's wearing can hide that fact. But it's not like people are staring. Right?

Abylus tries her best to not shield her eyes from the horribly bright light of the sun and ends up letting her bangs partially cover her eyes for a very slight protection. She meanders her way toward that obnoxious banging sound with the crowd partly to see what is going on, and mostly just to blend in. She lingers at the edge of the crowd and the square, not wanting to mingle too closely with so many people. In a nearby window she sees a reflection of herself, her fake self. Her real form would stand out here and so she opted to take on a less conspicuous form. Her short red hair hangs over her ears and down her neck, not quite to her shoulders. The skin she now wears is pale, but not the pallid gray of her natural form she would much rather be wearing. Looking at her false reflection she can't help but smile at the green eyes staring back at her. She blended in so long as she wore this guise, so she had just started to grow to like it.

Looking back out toward the crowd she scans the area where the ringing is coming from with squinted eyes. Dreadful sun. She would need to figure out a way to fix this dreadful photo phobia of hers. Seeing the cleric continuing to summon forth the citizens, she wanders about the square observing people and idly listening to their gossip. On her circuit around the square she finds herself envying what looks like a drow woman with a shade around her eyes. What was another denizen of the underground doing up here? She had never seen one of the dark elves before, but the woman was impressive and clearly could use magic. Wishing she could cloud her eyes from this oppressive sunlight had her give a slight jealous glare to the lucky elf before she kept moving. Another interesting sight however stopped her in her tracks. How she has missed a tauric dragon woman before was beyond her. Worse, she was staring at the woman in amazement. She had never seen such a sight before, and it showed on her dumbfounded expression.

Taizee meanwhile seemed to be perfectly content, sucking down on the last of her few, juicy Ruby Soles she had caught on the way over to Shrikeslee-on-the-Reef . Why did she chose exactly this island for her first venture into exploration above the waves? Well, it was green and peaceful looking, the sailors and dockworkers seemed rather nice, if a little weary and the sun always seemed to shine brightly here, a perfect, tranquil place to get her landlegs up under herself! She might have been a little encumbered by all the stuff the common goods merchant insisted that she needed on her adventure, but it wasn't like she was fast to begin with, so it was alright! Hearing that unfamiliar and powerful clang of some sort of metal hitting metal ring out from the town center, the setpentine mermaid made her way towards the gathering crowds, her approach illuminated in blue light from the brightly lit bulb dangling above her head. This made the people before her slowly wonder where the unatural light was coming from and turn around, only to back away a little in a startle as that almost 8 foot tall mermaid with a miniature sun on her head smiled back down at them.

And so, the path before Taizee slowly opened before her soon enough putting her in the middle of the crowd. Of course, the massive dragontaur, whose head poked up even higher out of the crowd than her own did piqued her interest, as well as the tall, dusky coloured human looking woman, but what really interested the mermaid was whatever had drawn this huge crowd of people here! The only place she had seen more creatures at once were in a school of fish, and you could hardly have a conversation with a fish! Remembering that, the almost eel like mermaid would bend over and greet a group of the citizens, suddenly starting to talk about things large and small in here heavily aquan accented common.

Aishe saunters her way through the crowd easily, the people trying to give her a wide berth as the tentacles sprouting from her sides and the thick tail hanging from under her skirt obnoxiously bump into bystanders. Most of the bumps and pushes are accidental, but every now and then she blatantly nudges a little too close to a random person's ass, apologizing for her clumsiness with a grin that can either be described as playful, smug, or shit-eating. She makes her way towards the edge of the square and sits on top of a barrel to better see over people's heads. Not that she really needs to, her being fairly tall, but like hell is she going to stand the whole time through what she believes is going to be a dreadfully dull sermon or town meeting.

The purple-skinned Tiefling yawns and scratches her head in boredom, wondering what event could possibly be worth interrupting her ample free time. Her meal of smoked Red Sole had been interrupted by the gonging of the world's most unnecessarily annoying bell, and she was less than thrilled by it. Still, it was an excuse to go out and uncomfortably stare at interesting people, which was one of Aishe's pastimes. A weird shadowy elf,a glowing fish-woman, a dragon-looking lady with heaving boobs, and a mousy redhead ogling the shit out of said dragon boobs are the first she lays eyes on, and a smirk forms on her face. Her hometown's diversity was a bunch of humans and one disgruntled halfling, so seeing so many weirdos was a refreshing sight to her even after her years away from home. She sit back on the barrel, lets her tentacles and tail flop to the ground, and waits for the meeting to start, keeping herself occupied by scoping out the citizens and taking mental notes about their asses.

Kawaiola stands near the front, heedless that her two-tonne bulk and sixteen foot height is blocking the view for those behind - and her swishing tail isn't exactly a picnic, either. That said, she's a view in her own right, soft sharkskin wrapped in a few scraps of fabric barely suitable for the beach, let alone an emergency town meeting.

Yet she herself is distracted, her senses telling her of prey nearby, a unique scent deeper and more enticing than the towns human population... it seems to be coming from behind, and her efforts to pinpoint it, turning regularly to glance back, are only more disruptive. Yet no one seems prepared to intervene, at least not after she's smiled politely at them with a mawful of razor sharp fangs.

It seems to be coming from the rough area of a green-skinned woman, rather pretty and exceptionally tasty-looking...

Lang isn't the only one of her kind around either. Completely missing them before now is quite the feat given their size. That said, she at least makes for good first impression. Attractive by the standards of most humanoids and those scales on her cheeks give her that hint of the exotic. Course her massive bust seems to be what's getting the most attention, not that surprising given that they're one of the largest pairs on the island. With only women like the massive shark woman near the stage beating her out thanks to the sheer difference in body scale. In a related note, observing her ass is difficult since she's sitting on it. But depending on how a person measures... she's either sporting a behemoth backside from having a dragon for a butt, merely huge to human scale from having a quadrupedal backside, or outside the realm of concern. Hard to guess.

Eventually she notices that she's being ogled by a redhead. Happening to have had her arms crossed underneath her chest, Lang hefts her breasts. "Enjoying the view?"

Abylus snaps herself out of her stupor and looks up at the impressive woman addressing her. "I umm..." She blushes heavily until her face nearly matches the color of her hair and she slightly nods. "I suppose I am... But I didn't mean to stare. That was rude of me, I apologize." She gives a slight bow and manages to show off her own petite rump to one hedonistic Tiefling without realizing it. Her tush is rather slender, not much meat on it but then most of the whole girl is like that. With some extra meals here and there it could definitely blossom however into an exquisite heart shape. Standing back she smiles weakly up to the large dracotaur. "I hope I did not offend you miss. I just... I'm new here and I have not seen many of your kind before." She idly scans around the crowd taking note for the first time of the large sharkwoman and mermaid. She pales a bit at the site of these two, realizing she is most assuredly not the only monstrous presence here in town. On the upshot however if she managed to snag a snack the locals might just be too scared of these other larger creatures to think twice that it was her. Her smile widens and she strolls up closer to the busty taur, hoping to maybe make a friend of one of these giants. "I am Abylus. It is a pleasure to meet you!" She extends a hand in a friendly way as if for a handshake.

Raffeal weaves his way through the crowd on the look out for a good place to watch whatever was about to happen. As he went he took note of some of the stranger people in the square. A dracotaur with huge... "tracts of land", a red headed human woman ogling said tracts, a sharkgirl near the front probably best to give that one a wide berth, a dark skinned elf huh didn't know they came in black, some sort of giant eel mermaid, and a... um... huh.
He makes his way over to group of barrels on the edge of the square. "Hey there" he says to the strange woman."My name's Raffeal, mind if I sit next to you?"

Ter'ra was not able to keep her eyes upon the source of the droning noise for long as people began to enter. Having lived in the underdark, the drow was not familiar with underwater creatures, and adapting to life in the coastal town was strange. She hadn't developed much of a taste for fish, and she wondered if the merfolk who filed in would be insulted if she did. Most worryingly was the large shark-creature that the sorceress could not identify. She was worried if such a being would turn on the assembled crowd. She didn't have the type of magic to try and fight such a creature, nor did she want to risk going toe to toe in an eating fight with it.

Once it was determined that the shark-person, though lacking in awareness of her surroundings, was not hostile, Ter'ra's gaze shifted to the mermaid trying to communicate with some of the common folk in the crowd. Though she could not make out what the person was saying, it did intrigue her why something without legs would have little worry venturing onto the island. Eventually however, her gaze went to the dragon woman, which elicited a small look of terror before the drow got a hold of herself. Though she had had bad experiences with her kingdom fighting the powerful beasts, the woman's almost cartoonish proportions had the sorceress worried. The only women with such generous assets she knew were the matriarchs of her home, who, while magically augmented, definately had their fill on sacrifices. This meant that the dragon woman had a formidible appetite and could sate it as well, or perhaps she was just endowed with what Ter'ra would think as a clumsying weight on her chest.

This did not mean that the dark elf did not have an amazing body of her own, just not nearly as impressive as some others. Descending from drow nobility, despite lacking the noble abilities, did mean that the drow had a very imposing but attractive look. Her body was very lithe and shapely, her curves not exaggerated or sticking out too far, and beneath her supple skin were hints of a very well-muscled (for a humanoid) build. Her orange-sized chest flowed naturally into her bared midriff and shapely hips. Her rump, though hard to see from her current angle, was rather flat and toned, with very little to offer. For the most part, the others were simply the wide array of humanoids she has been getting used to seeing.

"I'm used to it. When you're as... eye catching as I am that kind of reaction becomes common." Lang leans down toward Abylus. Not quite intentionally looming over the redhead in the process. "When it's from a cute woman it can also be kind of nice. I'm not a picky woman when it comes to attractive ladies if you want to see them closer sometime." Straitening back up Lang returns to public talk while taking Abylus' hand. "Lang Tuhu-yan. It's mutual."

With a heavy blush Abylus smirks up to Lang and shakes her hand vigorously. "I will have to keep that in mind then... And thank you for the compliment! I do try very hard on my looks!" She giggles and begins to happily jump up and down slightly causing her own small chest to bounce beneath her top. She stops her joyful little dance after a few moments and looks down at her bosom with a sigh. "Think I could still stand to gain some weight though as I am on the skinny side. Something to aspire toward I suppose." She shrugs and returns to happily smiling whilst scanning the crowd again. She notes a small green humanoid talking to a woman with... TENTACLES? How did she miss that before? Quite a nice sight though, a bit reminiscent of the stranger things back underground. Moreover if people accepted someone so brazenly showing off such aberrant features then perhaps her own might be equally tolerated. Contemplating this, she stands on her toes and shades her eyes to try and see over the crowd. "Wonder what is going on up there besides the clanging. Must be important to get the whole town here."

Aishe starts at the green man's voice, having been thoroughly distracted by her "research." She looks down from her barrel perch to see a little guy looking back at her. "Sure, knock yourself out. The name's Aishe." She grabs a smaller nearby barrel with a tentacle and drags it next to her own, patting it invitingly.

Once her hand is free Lang returns it to supporting her bust. "Fish based diets do tend to result in being on the skinny side. Just don't let yourself get caught in a loop of comparing yourself to others. It's not healthy. Especially when those others are twice your size to begin with." Lang briefly returns to her conversation with some of the other plus size inhabitants of the village while Abylus looks through the crowd again. "Dunno. Must be though since he seems to be waiting for absolutely everyone to arrive. You'll probably get a better view if you get closer."

Abylus lowers herself down to her feet and sighs, looking down at the ground. "I never said I compare myself to others... just that I am a bit skinny and could stand to gain some weight. I do see your point though." She fidgets and stretches, keeping a watchful eye on the crowd. "I think I will hang back here though. Don't want to try and force my way through the crowd... Think I will be able to hear whatever is going on from back here just fine." She smiles happily up to her new draconic friend.

Humans make up the largest number of people in the crowd, and half that number were elves. A little fewer were rat folk, half of that number were catfolk, and a few other races (humanoid) rounded out the rest. Most of them were dressed more for work than show, in clothes colored or accented ruby sole red, but a few members of the crowd had fancy clothes in indigo, purple, and dark blue. Indeed, most of the crowd keeps away from the shark woman. Taizee, on the other hand, has a little blonde girl admiring her, aged about twelve. Even the girl's nearby mother, try though she might to get her daughter to stop staring, can't help but take a look at her.

After a few moments, the cleric was stopped by a small blue frog-man tapping on his leg. Slowly, he turned around and bent over to listen to the frog man whisper in his ear. His frown softens a little, but his eyes widen and his mouth drops open an inch. However, his jaw quickly sets and he whispers back to the frog-man. A few moments later, the oread in yellow turns and climbs up onto the stage.

(If this is too intimidating of me, I can cut it without a whole lot of fuss:
Spoiler: show
Once he reaches the center, he stops. Then he glares at the shark woman who's intimidating the other people in the crowd. "You," he snarls, his voice low and gravelly. His finger is aimed right at Kawaiola. "Shark woman. I don't take kindly to people who bully my citizens. So kindly sit down and sit still." His flinty black eyes flash like steel, his lips disappear into his scowl, and even though he is smaller than Kawaiola, he stands up so straight and tall on the stage that he seemed to think he could tower over her.

Demoralize (Int) check v. Kawaiola: 30.

I honestly did not expect that high of a roll. As I said, I can drop this if it's wrong for me to write it.
)

Then, the cleric turns back to the rest of the crowd and spreads his arms. "Alright," he rumbles in a deep gravelly voice, "let's begin. For those of you who are new here, I am High Priest Dinar, official overseer of the various cults of worship. I am, by order of seniority, the second in command while the Governor is away." He pauses for a moment, as if something a thousand miles away had caught his eye. He clears his throat, though, and continues. "As such, I feel that I am ready to begin this meeting, so let's begin."

As he speaks, he doesn't pace about or move a whole lot. He just moves enough to catch the eye. His voice, however, rumbles and catches the ear just fine. "Now, there are three items on the agenda," he continues. "Item one: it has come to my attention, mainly through personal observation, that several clerics in this town have been harassing others. Thus, I feel the need to remind you, again," his nostrils flared as he glared into the crowd, "that while street proselytizing is legal and encouraged, directing it to a particular person or group is not. While you're talking in public, you are either speaking to everyone or speaking to no-one. Violations may be punished by fine, jail time, and/or revocation of right to assemble, and I will personally ensure that you get all three if I have to."

He focuses on a particular part of the crowd for a moment, on the westward side. This is not as intense as his glare to the shark, though he still maintains the same focused glare and tight-lipped scowl. Those at a good vantage point can see a human male with white hair and a long nose in ruby sole robes scowling back at him. After a moment, a brunette elf with a faint scar running down her cheek places a hand on the man's shoulder. Gently frowning, she softly whispers into his ear. Whatever it is she said, it gets the man to even out his face. From that point on, he only stares at Dinar, never moving his gaze anywhere else for anything.

Then Dinar turns back to the crowd. "Anyways," he says, "on to item two. The Brotherhood of Erastil's Future have announced that, by the grace of Erastil himself, they have finally bred a new variety of wheat that should be hardier and more fruitful. However, given recent magical phenomenon, it will only be grown at one farm under very controlled conditions until further notice. Those of you who wish to apply for this program, please see Mother Dalyn in the monastery for instructions."

His harsh eyebrows raise at this point, turning his hard scowl into a soft frown. "Finally," he says, firmly but softly, "the highest possible bounty for information regarding the recent disappearances has been raised to one thousand gold pieces. Two more people have gone missing..." He swallows. "One of them Governor G'kul."

The entire town starts to murmur to each other. "That makes eighteen," Dinar continues, his voice wavering slightly. "I-if you know anything, find any member of the guard and it will be investigated confidentially and quickly. Otherwise, keep your eyes peeled and pray for their safe return." Dinar nods. "That is all. If there are no other questions, you are all free to go." He stood on the stage for a little while, awaiting questions. The man and elf in the crowd turn and leave to the west. The rest of the crowd is mostly silent.

Kawaiola

With a soft sound that might be protest, Kawaiola seats herself, her long tail splaying awkwardly back over the ground behind her.

PS: Ooh, that's some good RP right there! The high priest might've made an enemy today... he's lucky he's not a tasty-looking girl, that's for sure!

Having intently followed the seafaring stories of a old, grizzled, but by now retired fisherman (the only one Taizee had gotten into contact with who didn't quickly excuse themselves and shied away), atleast until he got into very descriptive detail about the time he bedded a mermaid. Looking around herself, desperate for some way to leave the conversation, the blushing mermaid cought the glance of the woman, then of the little girl. Quickly giving a polite little nod and a excuse me, to the old man talking away, Taizee turned to the parent and child with a smile.
