New thumbles?

Postby tod3690 » Wed Apr 01, 2015 6:46 am

I wanted to ask of the new thumbnails were a new thing, or just a passing fad.

I kind of hate it, but given if it was an option, defaulting to the old style.

Might be related to April 1.

Assuming April Fools day thing, because it's a silly design for a gallery.

Yeah, me too! I mean it's no big deal, either way, but I'm still trying to figure out why, prank or not, it would elicit much of an emotional response either way. It's just thumbnail cropping.

Yeah it really isn't such a big deal. I guess for me at least it was the fact that they were cropped down and look like hexagons. I just think it's pretty neat considering other sites have square thumbnails and this was like "whoa, that's different" . We are like bees now living in hive lol.

Oddly, this is almost exactly the same prank that the furry art site Weasyl played (except theirs are egg-shaped).

for me it kind of reduced the usability of thumbnails, I can't tell much besides what colors are used.

My biggest takeaway from this thread is that I like the word "thumbles" and intend to use it going forward. :)

That's pretty odd. As best as I can tell, they have the same "radius" (no clipping from the center of the image to the edge), and barely 1/3rd of the least-used property in the corners has been clipped out. It's about the same as a circle cropping, which is reasonably common on some other major sites. Your icon, for example, is quite obviously still a lion. :)

I think it's just an April Fools prank. I don't know why hexagons, though. Maybe it could've been the shape of a full belly or something xP

I'd have gone for an FBI take-down prank personally.

I was very active on the site yesterday and saw the change happen moments after it did, and I searched the forums before going to bed for a post like this, or a tech post informing of the new change, to no dice. It was still march 31 when it happened here, so I didn't link it to April fools at all. But regarding that I kinda hope it is, because to me it's kind of reducing the efficiency of 'thumbles' (hee, I like that term too). Thumbnails are already small enough, cutting through some more really hinders its purpose imo :/

That said, if it is a prank, it could have been more obvious, because the way it is, it's halfway between too much and just legit of a change. I wanted to laugh about it and go "hah, gg!" but at the same time I'm unsure and kinda scared that it is a legit change :/ Unreadeable font would indeed have been a good, more obvious/annoying prank [EDIT: An FBI fake take down would have been great too ! lol] or even switching the hexagon thumbles mask with a more annoying one, like this one :

...In any case, as an April Fools' prank if it is one, it has achieved its basic purpose, confusing the f' out of us ! :D

I hope it is a prank!

Nothing against Hexagonal objects, but I tag my stories with the content therein and some of the text has been chopped off in my gallery. :X
