Recommendations for authoring tools

Postby jaime » Thu Feb 15, 2018 12:29 pm

Originally I was just going to use this thread to promote Inform 7, but then I thought, hey, just raving about how great one certain tool is seems like a waste of a thread, so why not open the floor.

If you write interactive vore stories, what are some of your favorite authoring tools or websites and what do you like about them? And, if you don't, but are interested in starting, read on.

To start the thread off, here's my own recommendation: I'm in love with this tool called Inform 7. It's technically a programming language, but, partly in an effort to cater to non-programmers, its syntax is natural language based. It pretty much just looks like plain English -- e.g., "In the East Desert is a room called the Oasis" is a valid variable declaration. Most of the time, it really feels more like you're just writing a story, rather than a program -- the only difference being, as you write, you're also describing how your story world is supposed to work when someone interacts with it. I will admit, it's a bit of an unconventional choice, since the interactive stories you can develop with it are text adventures, not choose-your-own adventures -- i.e., think Zork, not Goosebumps.

I haven't actually done much vore work in Inform 7, but I want to, and I'll certainly post it if I do. I know it sounds strange, but I really do think an interactive vore story presented in the format of a text adventure could work just as well as one presented as a series of branching choices.

Anyway, yeah, what are some of the ones y'all use?

There are several tools I recommend for any writer.

Editing Software
Grammarly: https://www.grammarly.com
ProWritingAid: http://prowritingaid.com
Hemingway App: http://www.hemingwayapp.com/

Speech To Text Software
Natural Reader: https://www.naturalreaders.com/
Ivona Voices: https://www.ivona.com/us/about-us/voice-portfolio/

Writing Organization Software
Scrivener: https://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/overview

Also you cannot go wrong with picking yourself up some writing thesauruses. These tools will not make you a good writer however, you still need to understand the denouements of writing in order to achieve any ability but they will certainly open your eyes to a better way of writing.

This thing has got to be the best idea anyone's ever had. Thank you so much for introducing me to this. It seems almost like the MS Word style checker, except good.
