Decided to have a shot myself at writing a submission, so I wrote a half-dragon enemy. Formatted as code to keep character spacing consistent.
Spoiler: show

Code: Select all
Half-Dragon Enemy Submission

  -Character Limit-
One line of a description looks like this:
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

The line starts at the "O", and must end at or before the "|"; otherwise, it
be cut off. If the last character is a space, it can go beyond the line. This
example is from the Sea Sludge:
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
The rope wraps around your ankle and pulls, knocking you flat on your back. You

The space at the end will not cause an overflow, and the line can safely end
on the "u" in "You".
When I mention a description line, I am referring to the above guide.

Creature written in Notepad++, using consistent character and spacing length. |

(Apex?) Predator: Half-Dragon

Main Description (3 lines or less)
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
With the build of a human but the scales, head, wings, and tail of a dragon,
these crimson-coloured denizens of the dungeon survive eating anything they can
find that they can force into their orifices, including would-be adventurers.

Attack Verbs (1 line, 3-5 variants)
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
The half-dragon bashes you with their tail
The half-dragon claws at you
The half-dragon bites into your skin
The half-dragon rends at your flesh
The half-dragon's tail fractures your rib

Vore Attempts (1 line per type)
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
The half-dragon takes off straight at you!
The half-dragon puts their full force into a backfist!
The half-dragon goes to overpower you!

Unwilling Swallow Success (4x2 lines per type)
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(OV)
You don't dodge in time as they charge at you with their whole body, your face
meets their own gaping mouth as your head is immediately taken into their
throat! Flailing at their body leaves them undeterred, the scales from their
draconic heritage preventing you from getting any good blow against them.

They gulp, forcing your shoulders into their mouth and leaving you without a
way to assault them any more. Your struggle weakened, they speed up their
efforts at devouring you before any opportunistic predator can take you both.
Before long, you fall into their stomach and feel them get up to continue on.

O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(AV)
Their clenched claw connects with your skull, knocking you face down to the
ground and dazing you. You barely register that there's a feeling at your feet
until you feel the pain from being dragged across the ground and turn your head
to face your lower half, eyes slowly focusing on what the half-dragon's doing.

When you finally collect yourself to realize your predicament, your calves have
already sunk into the half-dragon's depths. Grabbing at the ground only to get
pulled further in once more, you try to yank at your leg instead to no avail.
You frantically scramble until your cries are cut off from being sealed inside.

O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(CV)
They successfully grab both of your arms and hold you tight in their grip,
trashing at your legs with their tail to get you to fall over and holding your
arms to keep your face level with their groin. The slit in front of you opens
up and, unable to get free, forces you to watch as a shaft and scrotum emerge.

Before you can try to appease them they thrust into and over your face, taking
it in completely. They pull you up and thrust again, taking in your shoulders,
now releasing your arms as more of you is taken in and your ability to resist
is stripped from you. Before long you dangle as a prize between their legs.

Willing Swallow Success (4x2 lines per type)
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(OV)
They growl and bare their teeth at you, puffs of smoke threatening to
incinerate you, but as you stand unafraid they slowly relax their pose before
moving to approach you. Now face to face they size you up, and as you reach a
hand to their face they decide on what to do, taking your arm into their mouth.

They swallow, eyes locked on your own and telling you there's no going back now
, not that you intended to. Offering your other arm to them they swallow and
take in your head, enjoying the freedom of being able to taste their food. This
tasting continues until you arrive in their belly, them rubbing you thankfully.
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

(AV)
You approach arms wide and weapons undrawn as you try to show no hostility, but
the cautious half-dragon trips you onto your back as you draw close. As you
support yourself up you see their anus in your face, almost as if it orders
you to make the first move. Not one to displease, you give some gentle licks.

What you offer to the half-dragon placates it for a short while, but its clear
that it is done waiting for more when it pushes its weight onto your head,
forcing it inside. You rub over its scales as you lean into it, the dragon
enjoying all your ministrations until all of you ends up inside its depths.
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

(CV)
To show your submission, you go to all fours and crawl towards the half-dragon,
licking at their slit as you reach them. Enjoying you enough to not interfere
yet, the half-dragon watches curiously as their equipment comes out and you
lick that too, earning a pleasured churr from them for the new experience.

They soon decide to get the main show started, lifting you entirely off the
ground before pushing you head first down into the urethra, your shoulders,
waist, and legs quickly following. Your new home rocks as you arrive, their cum
escaping around you. You feel them lean down and churr happily next to you.
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

Digesting (1 line, 3 variants per type)
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(OV)
The heat in their stomach is more than anything you could have imagined.
The half-dragon rubs at their prey, eager to add your treasures to their horde.
The half-dragon's scales are spread apart by the bulge in their gut you make.

(AV)
The half-dragon claws unconsciously at their slit from your struggles.
You feel compacted as the half-dragon tenses, fixing their posture.
You hope it's just their front end half-dragons can breathe fire from.

(CV)
The half-dragon walks unsteadily, unused to its nethers being outside its body.
You sway back and forth from the half-dragon's odd walking.
You hear a moan as the half-dragon pokes and prods at your form.

Light Digestion (4 lines per type)
O-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
(OV)
The heat from being inside a fire-breating creature is too much for you, and
exhaustion finally takes you as you fall unconscious in the half-dragon's gut.
It smirks triumphantly as it feels your struggles stop, ready to claim the
prize of your body and your treasures to its hoard.

(AV)
You don't know how long you been in the half-dragon's bowels now, but however
long its been has been too long for you to endure. The continuous clenching
and massaging of its colon wear heavy on you until every part of you has been
added back into the half-dragon, leaving nothing to show your fate.

(CV)
In a sea of seed as hot as lava, you give out and give yourself to the half-
dragon. Its occupant no longer moving, the half-dragon decides to give
attention to its sctrotum in thanks for your ease of acquisation and your
addition to its contents, rapidly helping you set in to your new home.

Also a bug report, the text messes up a lot after being eaten by the minotaur without having broken its hypnosis, giving descriptions which can be blank or, having broken its reed inside its stomach due to struggle damage, ? ? ? ? P ? H ? ?? ? ? ? ? M, which I'm sure translates to something but our character in Vrogue doesn't seem to speak Minotaur.

0.19.1: Details in the changelog.

Hotfix! Literally in one case... see below. These are mostly bug fixes mentioned since the last update, which should all be okay now. I also made some changes to protect the player from dying lamely or getting stuck due to lethal damage.

The poison gas room was NOT removed. Now, tiles with damaging effects like poison and fire will not force you to pass out if they deal lethal damage until you leave that area. You can theoretically heal yourself while you are in gas or fire, but your natural regeneration is halted and each turn you would take lethal damage adds to a Near Death state, which steadily hurts you once you are out of the damaging area and deals more damage the longer you were lingering. The idea is that you can do what you need to do to end the damaging effect, but you pass out immediately after.

Instant death from lava is removed. If you are somehow over lava (say, because levitation or fire immunity wore off), the protecting effect will remain until you get to shore. However, you will take fire damage every turn while in lava, and taking lethal damage triggers the aforementioned Near Death state.

Finally, some weirdness involving the Minotaur's hypnosis was fixed. You will now correctly unequip your weapon OR armor (or just "be drawn" to the beast), will no longer drop your items, and the Minotaur's vore-type flags trigger normally if he swallows you via Hypnosis, which should fix the digestion-message bug you guys have been seeing.

I haven't seen any reports on Mindfog yet, which I hope means it is working as intended...! Thanks for testing things and sending me reports <3

Starting staves at some point become unidentified in debug mode.
EDIT: They don't even identify on use! It stays "oak staff" "maple staff" etc.

If you are on the same floor as a Minotaur, this is intentional behavior. Refer to the changelog and release notes for its Mindfog ability.

I read the notes, but "prevents the player from identifying items" sounded to me like it meant identifying newly found ones, not that it would un-identify already-identified items. Huh. OK.

BTW, you might want to hide inscriptions too, so the player doesn't just call all their items names to avoid this, that seems like a hassle.

It seems to be working fine. I did have a few suggestions, but I know you already said the Minotaur was hell to code to begin with, so you can just ignore them if you want to.

But I think it would be cool if you got a message upon entering the flor or periodically about the sound of distant music or something, indicating the effect the Minotaur is having. I also think it might be cool if occasionally when you aren’t able to see the Minotaur and aren’t in combat you lose control of your character for a few turns causing you to walk in the direction of the Minotaur. That being said I see why that might be difficult to implement, and the Minotaurs current functionality is already quite nice.

This was the exact intention for the Minotaur, right down to the sound of music. However, the player cannot be made to path correctly toward the Minotaur when walls are involved; convincing the game that walking through the wall is not an option is surprisingly hard. Additionally, while the concept sounds nice, losing control of the player to that degree is highly irritating and unfun in practice, as I discovered during testing. Simply not being able to move away from him (which I discovered by accident) is a less annoying alternative.

The concept of being pulled towards the Minotaur was the inspiration for the Mindfog effect; effectively, you are still drawn to the Minotaur, but under your own power (until you get close...). The suggestion for a message regarding distant music is good, and I may re-implement it as an alert when Mindfog takes effect (since currently the player gets no warning).

Messages for player devouring a Glutton appear to be missing.

If you befriend a minotaur (e.g. by killing its devourer), it's referred to as "the your minotaur" and keeps flashing dazzling smiles at the player character.

Are you going to consider hiding item nicknames/inscriptions near the Minotaur, too? Or is this perhaps going to be considered an advanced tactic for remembering which is which by writing their function on them IC?

For some reason, I thought the Glutton was an apex predator and so neglected to give them prey lines. I'll update that in the next release.

The minotaur should probably lose its Hypnosis ability if it gets eaten... I will look into this.

I am aware of marking items, and I intentionally left it unaffected by Mindfog for players to use as a sort of advanced tactic. Don't tell everyone ;)

I dunno what the T-Rexaur bug was, but I haven't run into it again. I definitely encountered it multiple times in the previous version though. *shrug*

The same issue that happened with the ally warlock casting slow in previous versions also happens for the swamp gunk's mud.

This bug seemed weird enough that I was hesitant to report it because I figured someone else must have run into it already, but: If I attempt to eat an enemy after reaching depth 12, my weapon becomes incapable of hitting enemies until I unequip and reequip it (or equip a different weapon). It definitely does this when the attempt is successful, and seemed to do it when it was unsuccessful too.

As for the Swamp Gunk, that is 100% intentional. I fixed the Warlock because that is a targeted spell - he shouldn't be casting it at friendly targets. However, the Swamp Gunk's slow is a passive effect on the area around it that affects ALL creature not immune to slow, allies included. Just... give it some space. And maybe don't make friends with slimes.

I had forgotten that I hadn't updated to the latest version and I found the room with the Minotaur in it. A trogg tripped a trap causing caustic gas to fill the room. I couldn't get away because of the Minotaurs ability, and I only just finished killing the Minotaur before getting paralyzed by the gas, and I got stuck in a death loop. Sucks a lot, but I'm so glad you fixed that. It's a good reminder to actually update.

I do also want to mention that the Minotaur might be my favorite enemy.

So I do like that you've added the ability to feed your allies, but it does seem a bit too punishing, or could at least be made clearer. For example if you use shift-z to do a longer rest, your ally will most likely become hungry and attack you before you've finished, with no time to react. I feel like it should possibly pause your rest so that you can react to it. That being said even if you do have the chance to react to it, if feels like you have such an incredibly short time before they attack you. Finally, every time I've had a pred ally eat something, they'll still immediately get corrupted and attack me, even if they just ate a trogg a few turns ago. I like that you added this in, but it feels like it needs some tweaks.

0.19.2: Details in the changelog.

I wasn't planning on putting this out so soon but I want to make the ally-hunger thing less annoying since I think I broke it. This should work better, or at least give you more warning. The original method was a percentage chance per round of making the ally "hungry", and if that triggered a second time before they were fed they would turn on you. Now, each ally has a Nutrition meter like the player's, visible under their health. It visibly decreases and changes color over time, and does so more quickly the deeper you descend. Also, Nutrition should not decrease while an ally is holding prey. Finally, the low-nutrition alert you get for allies requires player confirmation so you will notice it more readily.

I noticed that a lot of people were not aware that you could have a game with random enemies or one with a specific seed, so I slightly tweaked the menu to make this more obvious. On the downside, there's an extra step before starting a New Game, but I think it's a small price to pay.

There are some minor bug fixes, as mentioned by you guys. However, I was not able to reproduce the "post-level 12 weapon bug" described by betacygni. If someone can get this consistently, maybe with a specific weapon or enemy, I would appreciate the info.

Finally, a new creature... but not a predator, so don't get too excited. The Golem was meant to debut alongside some predators, but he was already finished during this update so I let him sneak in. He always appears exactly once on depth 20, and is inactive. The method to activate him should be fairly intuitive and the details are available for testers in the changelog, but I would like players to try and figure it out on their own at first. Once activated, the Golem serves as a loyal, hardy companion. He is not very strong, but he cannot be corrupted, is immune to certain effects (including digestion), and heals himself when heavily damaged. Arguably his most useful feature is the ability to sit inside of a predator and prevent it from swallowing the player, which makes some encounters trivial; this is why the Golem must be activated deliberately, giving the player the ability to opt out of using him and keep the game difficult.

So is the golem sopposed to be indigestible, or just resistant to it? Because from testing, it seems like they can still get digested, though it might take longer. Also, the ally nutrition bar is not present.

My intention that he not be digestible was so strong that I forgot to actually implement it. It will be fixed for the next update. Also, regarding the nutrition bar, it should only be visible for allies that can be corrupted. This excludes the bandit, imp, all troggs, and the golem.
