Abyssal (Vore Game Jam Loser)

Postby Esprit » Wed May 03, 2023 4:51 pm

Hello! a few weeks ago, i participated in the Game Jam for the Portal event (at least i think that is what it was called), and made a simple underwater platforming resource management game. it didn't end up as the most polished game ever, but it is complete! here is that game, with a single bug fix relating to HP calculation.

download (windows) BROKEN: https://mega.nz/file/dfIwDTSR#DInl1tsZJ ... gafHoeYhdo

download (windows) game jam version: https://mega.nz/file/9ahwyL6Q#dXWL7egdd ... q00mdOpS2A

what the game is about
you are sent to explore the ocean depths... but instead end up stomach of a giant mermaid! collect minerals to upgrade your diving bell so you aren't digested!

how to play
run around and shoot the crystals to gain "mineral", and spend that mineral in the diving bell on HP and acid resistance upgrades. watch out for the hanging drips of acid/mucus (i never decided what they were lol), and keep an eye on the numbers in the GUI--- especially HP, bell HP, and air.

controls
arrow/WASD to move

enter/down/s/shift to select in diving bell

enter/shift to select in menus

shift/enter to shoot

space to jump

space while off the ground to use jetpack, and WASD/arrow keys to steer jetpack

end/ESC to skip opening cutscene

strategy guide
Spoiler: show

-try to gather all the minerals at the top of the map early game, the acid is weakest up top, so you can save on replenishing mech HP

-keep an eye on the "air" number early game, as the jetpack uses it up fast. late game you will need to return to the bell often enough it won't be a problem.

-upgrade the bell's acid resistance first, as it will sink faster (and, thusly, encounter higher acid numbers) than you collect mineral-- it is also constantly taking damage, while the mech is safe when inside.

-don't waste mineral on HP if it is above 75. each mineral heals 25, and hp is capped at 100

note- windows doesn't trust gamemaker games for some reason, so you might need to click through a few "yes, run this file" boxes.

note 2- i am considering remaking the game from the ground up, adding mechanics cut due to the game jam time window (3 levels, boss fights, mob enemies, varied resources, a tutorial, story elements, ETC.

if you have any ideas, i would love to hear them!

Yes! Thank you so much for continuing this, Esprit! I adored this entry - You made your own sprites, game, mechanics, etc... This game definitely had the most potential at game jam and I can't wait to see what you do with it!~

Just stopping in to mention this was a fantastic entry for one person creating all assets. The loser title does you a disservice! Glad to see you're considering continuing!

The game is fun, calling it loser is a disservice, also, the goal of a game jam isn't to win, but testing our skills as game devellopers, and thanks to the time limit and theme, make us experiment more than we normally do.

This looks pretty fun, and I don't think it should deserve to be called a loser (Since like a couple of people mentioned, it's quite a disservice).

But I'm very glad that you'll continue the project after the jam! I will keep looking forward in this project! ❤

I actually voted for this game in the jam, i liked the concept even though I keep dying on the upper levels.

I have some ideas:
1. Have a few things were if you shoot them would generate gas that would push the bell up and get some extra time to upgrade it(it could be few and hidden around the area) additionally it would cause a small quake around and a small burp sound in the background.

2.A map of the mermaid body in the bell, this wouldn't influence gameplay wise but this map shows on which part of the mermaid's body the bell is currently located and also pauses the game to allow the players to see the map without hurry.

3. Mermaid is still hungry, sometimes she will eat some other things that would fall into random areas, the player would be able to recolect them to gain materials, also there would be some spots in which the player could shoot to trigger the mermaid's hunger and fill the area with more things.

4. Add more preds, perhaps if the game is successful it could be a good idea to add more preds in the future and posible scenarios, for example a pred got a messed belly so is up to the player to use the bell to enter and look what is causing the problem.

I hope to see how this game progress

interesting idea, though I can't figure out a way to smoothly integrate this as a method of slowing the bell. as a way to increase air (imma put more emphasis on that this time), it is a good idea tho, imma probably use it.

yep, this was originally planned for the game jam version (cut, surprisingly not because of time, but because i forgot lol). it will definitely feature in the next version, along side, hopefully, a minimap

another good idea I don't think i have the technical capability to implement. there will be more of an emphasis on her past meals, tho!

rather than expand to more maps, i am adding secondary predators inside the mermaid (those former meals i mentioned) both as mob enemies, and boss fights.

Coolio, I'm always a bit worried about making youtube content about vore stuff cause I don't wanna attract haters to the game developers I review. But knowing your cool with it is comforting.

i think imma this thread as a devlog for the remake version of this game.

so, updates:

-next game will be called "abysmal" to differentiate it from the game jam version

-added a machine gun mode

-made some minor changes to the controls (you no longer instantly jump if you are holding space while landing on the ground-- so just one jump per button press now, and i made the boost function act a little different if you press 3+ buttons at the same time)

...and thats about it. i am working slower on this version, and it is a whole lot bigger, so it will take some time. i will probably start making progress videos or something, maybe when i get all 3 gun modes working. that way i can stay motivated.

Looks cute! You made all these assets yourself? I shall follow your career with great interest!(As others have said, the loser title does not do you justice.)

thanks!

i drew most of the sprites on paper then pixilized them in GIMP. i made just about all the sprites in 4-6 hours on day 1 of the jam, so some of them (floor blocks) are a bit rushed

This game is fascinating! It's not unfair, but hardly gives you a moment to rest. Great concept, great job!

This game is awesome. I really love how you explore the pred's body. Please consider making more games like this!

Also, what was the specific game jam that this game was a part of? I would like to check out those games too!

Odd situation, but someone submitted a copyright takedown on the mega file. absolutely no idea what the thought process behind that would be, or the desired end goal, but im not about to go through the effort of disputing it.

i have relinked the original game jam version-- there is a slight error on some of the damage calculation that makes the game a bit easier- and will re-upload the final version when i am feeling less lazy.
