Re: Vore War V41E (updated 7/2/23)
what programs are needed to run the game? I'm not seeing a VoreWar or VoreWar.exe file[/quote]
When you extract the files, your folder should look something like this: (note, the UserData folder is created once you boot up the game for the first time)
Just double tap on the VoreWar application, set whatever window dimension settings you want to play the game with (I strongly recommend not playing windowed mode), and hit the play button.
No additional programs are needed since this is made in unity. Hope this helps!

Looks like you downloaded the source code rather than the actual game. The assets folder is a dead giveaway.
Just go back to the github page and click the windows.zip file, not the source code options. That should fix the problem.

BoringKoboId, All the links are defunct. Last I saw, some maps might still be in distribution on a discord server, but that was a while ago

Yeah, I'm sorry. I didn't know about Discord refreshing its links every 24 hours (Seems a little too often imo...) I need to comb through the server and host them all on mediafire or something, but I haven't had the time to do that. Your best bet right now is to join the discord server and browse the maps channel yourself for now

Re: Vore War V42B (updated 9/13/23)
well...hate to say it..but the game currently is unplayable because your unable to recruit any soldiers, there is no option or button to recruit anything anywhere in the village menu. and even setting/changing the resolution does not fix anything. ive tried it 3-4 times and still have been unable to find a way to recruit units to have an army.....so i hope thatll get fixed in the future because its quiet a big issue...

There is no functionality for doing that within the game, but you could theoretically do it with a good image editing software (PS, Paint.NET, GIMP), the source code, and a whole lot of trial and error. The easy way would be to replace an existing race by changing all the sprite stuff. This would entail hours of tedious work. I think changing the race name within the game to what you want your custom one to be called would probably involve messing with the source code, for the same reasons (like callbacks and associations between text files based on specific keywords or lines) you would need it for making your own from the ground up.
That being said, If you do some digging and look into it on your own, maybe by making a separate backup of the entire game and source code and then experimenting with changing one part at a time, it is most likely a doable task. I guarantee you it will be extraordinarily painstaking though.
Adding new races is best left to the developers working with the original code of the game who are already familiar with how and why everything works. However, in the future, I would love for a way to more easily do such things. If only custom races and special mercenaries and new traits were as easy to create and change as the custom events or name lists.

Hello, is there a way to make it so that when its the AI's turn, you have more time to see what happens in the message logs by making it so that you have to manually pass each action so that you can actually read whats going on? Thanks!

Is there any sort of strategy guide to this game? Its simple enough to know how to play but the AI always beats me, so are there any tips/tricks out there?

Uh, don't send out an army to fight until it's max sized, train them until they're like level 4 so they don't fold like wet cardboard, build infrastructure for more money, don't buy basic weapons, if you need more population in a city you can dispand an army to give it pop because more pop gives more growth.

At the start of the game, even if you don't have armies frozen on first turn, wait 1 turn before recruiting any units so you have the money to totally kit them out, then on turn 2 make a full army in your capital. Equipping your starting army with advanced weapons and focus firing down units in the enemy army will generally win you your first battle. Keep your army together, stay just out of range, and get a pre-emptive attack on their frontline with your whole army and you basically start out with a numbers advantage. From there just keep focus firing down targets, usually prioritizing ones with the best Damage : HP ratio, and try and retreat your injured units away from the fight to preserve them. If you have auto surrender on you can often keep injured units alive by voring enemy units and making your own too big to vore, though that's somewhat race dependent. Follow these steps and you'll generally win your first battle with minimal casualties, and some good level ups on your army, at which point its basically over for whoever you just fought. Go after their villages, being a little careful of the capital if you don't feel strong enough to take it, for more easy exp and income, and make sure to keep your army at max size. Since you have the level advantage you'll be much stronger, and following the same tactics as your first battle to minimize casualties will often mean you just won't lose any more units at this point. Your army will keep leveling up and soon be largely unstoppable. It's also fine to give your leader the lion's share of prey early since leadership is a really good stat to get leveled up, especially with auto-leadership enabled.
Once you've got enough money to roll out another army follow the same steps as before and go after another neighbor, but this time pay attention to if they've won any battles and how strong their army is. Your new army won't have a leader and will be weaker, but your superior tactics will usually let you win into a mostly evenly matched enemy force. However, if you think the enemy is too strong for you, you can usually bait them. Sit your army on a village the enemy army is gunning for where you have fully garrisoned it (make sure your garrison is using advanced weapons. You can hold off on buying weapons to garrison a town until its actually in danger of being attacked and use the money on more important things before). The enemy will usually attack anyways and be destroyed by your overwhelming numbers, even if your army isn't anywhere near max size. You can also use this trick to defend villages you don't have an army near: just recruit and equip a few units before they get there and use those + the garrison to overwhelm with numbers.
If you have spare money and don't feel like you need more armies immediately Mills are a good investment. A mill in a high happiness village will pay for itself relatively quickly, and is the best building for getting your income up. With a few mills up, your neighbors villages under your control, and high leveled armies you'll become basically unstoppable. You can start going to mercenary villages to get stronger units and make buffer armies if you want, but at this point the world is really your oyster. Vore War is super snowbally and once you've taken enough wins in the early game the world is your oyster, at least when playing with mostly default settings.

I'd love to see a proper Linux release, myself. It technically runs via Wine, but almost all of the buttons are blank. (Oddly, running it in Steam via Proton works just fine. Go figure…)
Of all the things I’ve lost in life, I miss my mind the least. (I’m having a lot more fun without it!)
