There's a step-by-step guide here: https://docs.finmer.dev/tutorial/part1
It should help you to familiarize yourself with how stuff is built in Finmer, and it includes a combat scene at the end too.

Nope, though there are a few old short stories on my FA profile: https://www.furaffinity.net/user/nuntis/

As mentioned above, please check out the documentation, which includes a paws-on guide for how the Finmer engine works: https://docs.finmer.dev/tutorial/part1

Game is very fun, but I am stuck in the red maw hideout. Can't find out a way to budge the minecart and there are no tools to be found.

Here's some directions:
Spoiler: show
You need a crowbar, to pry it loose. From the minecart, go east, then south. There should be a button to pick up a crowbar. Do so, then return to the minecart and examine it again. This will progress the quest.

You may also use the crowbar to break open the chest (west twice, from the minecart), if you don't have enough Strength to do it yourself. Be sure to do that before dislodging the minecart, because that will break the tool.

If it's any consolation, I missed it for a while too. Thing is, I could have swore I went right of the cart several times, but didn't see any anything to interact with or new directions to go. I did notice that on occasion the new directions take a full second or two to load in, so I may have just started rushing around trying to find something, when the game didn't have enough time to load in the new direction.

That's a bug, as a matter of fact - the compass buttons can sometimes stay grayed out for just a little longer than they're supposed to. If you click anywhere on the game window, they'll 'refresh'. It's on my radar, but I haven't yet figured out a permanent fix for it.
