I don't care about plot so much as emotion. I need there to be some emotions or else I don't give a shit about the characters and can't be turned on. Fear, love, worry, shame, embarassment, loneliness, deep trust of a good friend, emotions like these make for a story that I care about.

It's not really related to the length. I just have to be persuaded to give a shit about the characters and share their fear of being eaten, hate and desire to eat, sad desperation to help a friend, etc.

Why? Because it is so so easy for me to just use my imagination to come up with any random basic vore scene that gets me off. But to love and care about characters that surprise me and keep me in suspense---that is something that requires a story that I didn't write myself.

I read vore fiction to jack off and I presume the people read vore fiction to jack off. A plot can be fun, but only if it consistently delivers fetish content.

It's never a good idea to presume that "The People" do anything. (Unless your writing political propaganda that is!)

Different people use Vore for different things. There are *tons* of people just like you, who use it for the reason you do, but not everyone is in that category.

I just let the stories write themselves. While I wouldn't say my work is mindless drivel (I have been asked to do some rather high-story commissions as of late) I don't have a clear view of my work as well... I'm the writer.

As for what I read... It depends. Like a lot of people may try to add plot, but suck at it while being amazing at the porn parts. Then the opposite is true as well.

Then there's fanfiction where if there's just some bits of character off, I kind of just want to drop everything and stop reading, which I often do.

Writing is like all arts. Taste and skill determines everything. The writer's skills, and the audience's tastes.

Yes, I had a feeling someone would respond with that. Indeed I'm aware that some people genuinely get involved in plot-lines and world building in this fetish and other fetishes. It is not something I have ever really understood. Don't get me wrong, world building is fun, and world building for a fetish would be sexy, but it would still only be something I'd partake in when I was horny. Forget about RP'ing in a fetish setting without diving into the fetish content relatively quickly and consistently, in my case.

For example people post giantess stories on other sites and sometimes the stories go on and on without any fetish content (beyond the existence of the giantess in the basic sense) making any appearance. I just don't understand it.

I know it's meme material to say "I read/watch it for the plot!" when talking about smut, but occasionally I DO find stories that either aren't my fetishes, or don't have fetish content period, that I get hooked to for the plot. Hell, I think I read one on Giantessworld that came out to 22 chapters, with 0 smut in the entire thing. And I still loved it. Just don't ask me why that happens, because vore is definitely a fetish thing to me.

Glad I found this forum I was just beginning to think about this same issue. I do view plot as being more important than the fetish aspect. However, this enhances the fetish aspect for me. If I, as a reader, can identify with the character either as Pred or Prey It makes the scene more interment. lets take a character who is a voraphiliac but lives in a setting where digestion is permanent. A simple one off scene wont have the same effect. prey is scared but exited and gets eaten doesn't really do much for me. However, If we get to see this character develop see their friends and family learn about their hopes and aspirations. The roller coaster of emoticons they are feeling become more real. We can see that they are truly risking everything when they take the plunge.
You also create more opportunities to build upon. perhaps they have a pred friend who swallows them for periods of time, but has been thinking about just keeping them next time. or our prey character constantly asks their pred friend to digest but the pred doesn't each time. A simple plot can lead to far more fetish opportunities than a one off smut flick. Now I do enjoy the one off stuff. I mean sometimes I just want to read about a pred lounging about digesting some hapless prey, and that's perfectly fine.

If I had to chose I always go for plot first fetish second. For with the plot, you get a wider variety of situations to explore.

I figured I'd throw in my two cents, just to try to balance the voiced opinions somewhat. I am soundly on the "I just wanna get off" side of the fence. That's not to say I never enjoy longer stories -- I occasionally do, but usually only when the writer is extremely skilled. But, for the most part, when I decide it's time to go read/watch/look at some vore content, it's generally because I wanna (primarily) use my other head for a while. If I want to engage in a 50,000 word epic plot, there is a vast ocean of available non-fetish material for me to choose from, most of which is probably of a higher quality than what I can find if I go picking through the relative puddle of erotic content.

Again, that's also not to say that the writing in the erotic stories I like is completely unimportant.

RediQ wrote:It's not exactly either of the two - I feel like smutty stuff without some context for what's happening will just be kinda empty and unsatisfying, but if there's too much of a deep or serious plot attached to vore erotica, I feel like it kinda detracts from the erotic aspect by taking me out of the mood, even if it's a good story otherwise.

This basically sums up my feelings as well. Above almost all else, context, dialogue, and scenario-building are key for my enjoyment -- just not many chapters worth of it. Enough to set up a fantasy. For instance, the story "The Best Medicine" by protoka (which, for some reason, I can longer find on here -- a damn shame, it was probably one of my favourites and I can't find it anywhere else) did this perfectly (for me, at least). Introduced the only two characters, set up a relationship (which is key to the dynamic - in this case, patient/therapist), gave enough physical description to be enticing but not so much as to be overbearing or restrictive to the reader, led up to the act itself (the climax - literally and figuratively), described it (again, more than just "she got ate", but not enough to drag on), wrapped it up with a short conclusion, and that was that. The whole thing could be read in <10 minutes, and it had me damn near shaking with excitement the first time I read it. I lost count of how many times I reread it a long time ago.

Additionally, with how niche vore is without even getting into the many different sub-topics and extremely specific paraphilias that it splinters into, not only do long plots eventually become boring or distracting to me but often end up killing my enjoyment of the fantasy altogether because they overspecify some detail of the world that no longer appeals to me. What's particularly frustrating is when a plot-based story starts out as something I enjoy, then evolves into something I'm less interested in -- even if it eventually continues to explore the stuff I'd usually like, I often can't get back into it because I don't care about/didn't read that in-between plot, so I can't fantasize as easily about the new context.

Artemis wrote:If I didn't want to think, I'd prefer to be viewing images. Images without text. I don't know, reading just gets in the way if all I want is a cheap thrill, y'know?

I understand where this is coming from and I don't entirely disagree -- I like images too, for different reasons than stories. However, that doesn't mean that I'm either looking to turn my brain off and look at some art, or turn it up to 100% and get invested in a novel-length political thriller with the occasional page-long vore scene thrown in. When a story has the perfect length and level of description to set up a solid framework for the fantasy and then just let my own imagination fill in the tiny details -- oof, that's the spot.

When writing, it's hard for me to come up with stories with a plot that I personally...well, enjoy. Enjoy enough to both write and read honestly. I'm currently trying to just write stuff without plot and just create some fetish fuel and for laughs.

I tend to like more a balance between vore and plot: I like and enjoy plot if it helps to explain why the vore will happen or introduces characters I don't know of, and I obviously want the vore part to be detailed and interesting.
However, if I already know the characters (like stories with characters from standard media) I don't want to be reminded of how each character looks like every time someone posts a new story (small descriptions during the story will be more than good enough, if I really can't imagine how the character looks like I'll just search a picture of him). Viceversa, I don't like when the OCs of someone are only introduced in their debut story and then never described again, forcing me to go search for other stuff to have an idea of how they look like

It depends on my mood and my knowledge of the writer, if I'm familiar with their writing style I know how often they pace out their fetish scenes to keep me going through the whole story, let's be honest I'm on a fetish site for a reason. :P

Mysta and French snack I think are great examples of people who sprinkle in vore and plot in equal measure, I do enjoy plot heavy stories from time to time cause they do make the vore scenes feel more impactful.
