Working on animation

Postby Hexadec » Tue Feb 05, 2019 2:57 pm

Hello!

So I'm working on an 2D animation of a little story I've got in my mind for now some month.
I started to make a little "animated" storyboard you can find here: http://hexadec.rf.gd/videos/project_hell_sp2.webm

At the moment, I have some drawings (coms) to finished, and I'm searching for an animation tool that's work on Linux (Yeah yeah, I'm a nerd :P) and ... free ?
I've try some of them: Krita (I made the this part of storyboard with it, but kinda buggy), OpenToonz (Looks not bad at all, but too buggy), Pencil2d (not bad but really limited), Synfig (WTF), and finally Blender (beta 2.8, and it's just REALLY COOL).

The next step will be to test more Blender 2.8 (I know Blender for 3D, but woow, the grease pencil mode is pure love), and try 5 sec full rendered to see if it look good, and I'll share it to have some returns. <3

Hello Hexadec,

Looking for free stuff on Linux pretty much means open source projects. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a huge market for 2D animation tools in general, and looking for tools on Linux is even more limiting. You already listed the two tools that I would recommend, Krita and Blender. There isn't a ton of english language documentation for Krita, but it seemed to me that the animation tools are really aimed at game development rather than the type of animation that you are doing. I think Blender will be your strongest tool available.

What features are you looking for that you do not currently have in Blender?

Yep, well at the first look, the animation system in Krita does not like hard, but the layers seems broken: A layer on the timeline will sometimes disappear!
The other problem with krita is, you can not animate vector. Vectors are really useful if you have to upscale your render, or simply change the size of character etc...

Blender do all of this + the 3D part. The little problem is, the version with 2d tools is still in beta (I had a crash or two, reported).
I think I'll finish my storyboard on krita, and move the true animation part on Blender.
I don't think a feature is missing in Blender. I'm going to test a trial of Toon Boom and TvPaint to see if there are any useful tools that are not in Blender.
