I've finally built a demo of my second game project.

System Requirements for the game:
1. NET Framework 4.5.2;
2. OS: Windows 7 or higher;
3. RAM: 2 GB or more;
4. Integrated graphics cards before 2009 may not work.

It will be a retro-style platformer. Of course, the game will be size-difference-themed, and will contain lots of cool size-difference images.
At the moment, the images have been replaced with stubs (old images of our team). Over time, images will be added ( as well as game levels and other game content). The same event will, in the future, show different images, so hopefully the player will not get bored.
I want to say a few words about the story.
Have you ever had an electronic appliance break down out of the blue, or do you suddenly find that your kitchen faucet is open and water is pouring on the floor? Maybe when you look for something you need and it has suddenly vanished into thin air? What could be the cause of such horrible actions? TINY WITCHES OF COURSE! Tiny witches came to the human realm from a parallel world.
Who have to fight the tiny witches? Tiny witch hunters of course! But in order to become a real witch hunter, the applicant must first learn and pass the final test! This game is about the final exam of one of the applicants for the witch hunter service.
In this game we follow our protagonist as he tries to pass his final exam. The main gist of the game is that our main character battles witches, when he loses all of his health the witches does various “FUN” things to him.
This game will be, like, a prequel to the game which development is now, temporarily, suspended (I mean this game: https://aryion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=64360). I intentionally simplified the graphics of the prequel by making it pixelated. Pixel graphics are much faster to create than the elements used in the suspended game. Who knows, maybe this game will deserve a remaster if it's a success...
As I said earlier, I got the source code for the game from my friend and assistant Sam Smith (I used to help create the images for this game, but Sam decided to give up development). The basic mechanics of the game have already been created. The design of almost all levels is also ready. Now I need to redesign the game concept to fit my idea, create new enemies and of course create a lot of images for the cutscenes.
I want to say right away that this is not my main project (link to the main project - at the beginning of the post). Therefore, perhaps, posts on the game "The Final Exam" will be released irregularly and infrequently... Although, everything can change, and this project may well become the main project, if most of my subscribers wish it. Of course, paid subscribers have the final say.

I have the latest version of .net framework, windows 10, 32 GB of ram, and a GTX1080, but the game won't launch. A window appears for a moment after I run it, but then it disappears. Do you have any advice? Thanks!

Thanks so much for the feedback! It seems that the Ifaction engine is having issues with some sort of hardware. Unfortunately, the Ifaction developers are no longer in contact and I can't clarify this.

The problem can be solved from another Angle, such as increasing the distance the enemy walks, increasing the size of the platform on the map. In fact, as a casual game does not need to be very difficult, Just make it fun and easy to play

Hi!
I originally didn't want to write about a platformer this week. But then I had a few free minutes and decided to update the devlog about The Final Exam after all.
Thanks to you, a bug with one of the checkpoints was discovered and has been fixed in the new build. I think in the future I will create a separate location for each checkpoint.
Also, one of the players pointed out to me that the player has too much sliding, and it is very uncomfortable. Unfortunately, in this game engine it is not possible to further reduce sliding. If I further reduce the sliding factor, bugs start to occur.
In general, the engine I'm making this game on is very glitchy! Yes, this engine is the simplest of all the engines I've seen. But, unfortunately, the engine is no longer supported. I think this game will be my first and last game on this engine. I don't think I'll have time to learn any new engines in the future, so I'll go back to developing on RPG Maker.
I was advised to increase the size of the platforms and the distances to the enemies to reduce the discomfort of sliding. I will definitely do as I was advised. I will try to make the platforms in the new levels longer. The point is that the design of all levels is ready (I got it together with the game source as a gift). I'll have to work hard to achieve a comfortable game balance.
Right now I haven't changed anything in the first level (except for very small minor modifications). I will definitely revisit the first level during the polishing phase of the game. I will also be polishing the rest of the locations at the same phase. Please be patient! I want this game to bring you nothing but pleasure! And the main feature of the game is a lot of cool size-difference images in the cutscenes!
I've started building the second level locations, but they are, so far, completely empty. There are no backgrounds, no scenery, no enemies - just platform tiles. Everything necessary for a full game will appear later. Let me remind you that platformer is not my main project. Though I think this game will be completed faster than the main game.
The working build of the game has been updated. The link is available to active paid subscribers.
To lighten the mood, a size-difference image is included in the attachment. This image is not part of the game, but taken from our old gallery just for fun. This full-size image (and many others) are available for paid subscribers.

There are several problems:
1.from the checkpoint should give me fully replenished health.
2. the penalty for falling from the map is too serious, the more appropriate method is: reduce health, and revive nearby.
3. the number of checkpoints is too small, I can't even reach the second checkpoint.

Checkpoint remembers the progression in which you saved. In the future I will create a separate location for each checkpoint and add health replenishment there.
Falling into the abyss sends the player to the checkpoint. This is how it's done in most platformers, and I think it's fine. In the future, during the polishing phase, I will optimize the length of the platforms to make the falls as small as possible.
There will be a lot of changes in the polishing phase. I am writing down all the wishes of the players. Right now this is just a working build, and my goal is to create all levels. After that, I will work on optimization. However, I wouldn't want the game to be too easy. Believe me, after a few attempts to pass the skill increases significantly. I've already made infinite lives in the game. Death only returns to the nearest checkpoint. This hasn't happened with old games on 16 bit consoles. And my game is an imitation of the old 16 bit games!
Also, the most interesting images in the game will be when the player loses. There will be a lot of images! This is the main feature of the game.
I repeat again, the final version of the game will be polished, and I will take into account all your wishes!

I want to update the devlog of The Final Exam game.
Thank you all so much for the feedback!
I've written down all your comments and suggestions. I've already managed to fix some of them. Some things I will definitely come back to during the polishing phase.
Unfortunately, some things cannot be changed due to engine limitations. I apologize for that. I probably won't be making any more games on this engine because it is no longer supported.
One of the problems with the game is the very large character inertia. The character keeps moving for a while (like sliding on ice) when the player releases the control keys. I tried to fix this problem by digging into the engine code. I was even shown the lines of code responsible for sliding. However, I was never able to change anything. Moreover, I did something that made the game stop launching altogether. Fortunately, I made a backup copy of the game beforehand.
Apparently, this engine is made in such a way that the same sliding function applies to all characters: both player and enemies. When I tried to change something, some enemies started moving slower, others stopped moving altogether. After several futile attempts, I decided to leave things as they were originally. I don't exclude that I will come back to this problem later, during the polishing stage. But I make no guarantees that it will be fixed. I will try to make the level platforms longer so that the player can move around more comfortably. However, since the location schemes are already done (as PNG files), I am primarily transferring the levels into the game as is. I'm only making minor changes in the process of adding new levels. Final changes will be made during the polishing phase. Please take this into consideration if you want to write me a comment about excessive character sliding.
I've also made some changes with checkpoints. There are more of them, and each checkpoint is now placed in a separate location. And a health regeneration elixir has been added to each location.
The last things I did this weekend were adding some more empty second level locations, and changing the background images. It's possible that the background images will change a few more times in the future. It's a pity that the engine only provides one layer for the background image with parallax.
At this stage of development, I don't plan to make any more changes to the first layer. I will definitely write down all comments and suggestions and try to take them into account in the future.
Now I plan to make decorations for the second level. After that I need to create new enemies. Images for the cutscenes also need to be replaced (right now my old images are temporarily used in the cutscenes).

Hi!
I get a lot of complaints about the game not launching. Even if the computer configuration is many times higher than the minimum system requirements. After the demo update, there were several cases when the game stopped launching even for those users who had it running before.
I cannot explain the cause of this problem. I am completely disappointed with the IFAction engine, and I would like to stop developing this game...
But, unexpectedly, my friend Sam Smith, gave me his license for Construct 2 engine. Despite the fact that this engine is also no longer supported, it has fewer bugs. And it also does not require knowledge of programming languages.
Now I will continue to develop the platformer, but I will have to transfer everything I have created into the new engine. Some things I will have to do all over again. Because of this, it will take some time to create a new demo version of the game. Please be patient.
I have not updated the working build, but I have moved it to a new folder as usual for security reasons. The new folder is available for paid subscribers.
That's not all!
Sam Smith (thank you very much), gave me another engine that does not require knowledge of programming languages. This is SHMUP Creator! It is designed for creating shoot'em up games.
Even though this engine is quite simple, it still requires learning. I started making the game by importing some of my images I had created earlier into it. This is the earliest prototype, and it will completely change in the future. That's why I didn't post a working build. Instead, I added a small gif animation of what came out. It's available in a public post on Patreony and Boosty. For some reason the animation is a bit laggy, but I didn't have time to redo it. I apologize.
I want to say that, in the future, the characters will look much better because the sprites will be animated.
And so, now I have three games in development at the same time!!! And I want to finish each of them! What have I done?! How did I get to this point?! I have so little free time! Did I do the right thing? What do you think?

Hi!
Today I started porting the Final Exam game from the IF Action engine to the Construct 2 engine. I already have a test prototype ready.
Yes, the Consttruct 2 engine is no longer supported either. However, it is still relevant and has less problems than IF Action. A definite advantage of Construct 2 is its perpetual license (unlike the new Construct 3 engine, for which you have to pay every year).
Let's see what kind of game we will get on the new engine.
I haven't made a public demo yet, because I haven't created a single level in the game yet. The prototype is only available to paid subscribers on Patreon and Boosty.
Now I need to completely port all the locations of the first level to the new engine. After that I will continue to create other levels. Fortunately, the level designs are already prepared (as I said earlier).
For now, the game will be made only for Windows PC. It's hard for me to say now what the minimum computer requirements are to run the game. I tested the prototype on three computers:
1. AMD Ryzen 7 4700G 3.60 GHz, 32GB RAM, GeForce RTX 3050, Win10 (Sam Smith's computer);
2. AMD A6 9220e 1.60 GHz, 8GB RAM, integrated graphics card, Win10 (my work laptop that I do everything on);
3. Intel Atom D525 1.20 GHz, 4GB RAM, integrated video card, Win7 (my kids' computer).
The game ran on all of these computers. No problems were observed on Sam's computer. On my kids' weak computer, the game was a bit slow, but was quite playable... On my work laptop, however, the game slowed down a lot! I can't tell what the cause of this is right now. Perhaps it's because I haven't had my laptop serviced for a long time. I'll definitely look into it when I have time. I hope that the problem is really just me!
Also, I really hope that the Construct 2 version of the game will be able to launch for those users who didn't launch before.
The game prototype has been uploaded to the paid subscribers folder. The old working build on the IFAction engine has also been saved so that new users who will be able to run that version of the game will have an understanding of it.
As for the SHMUP style game - I will postpone the development of that game for the future. Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to, I can't develop three games at the same time. I don't have the time or energy. Those who don't know about my life situation - I wrote about it in previous posts.

Hi!
I apologize for the slight delay in updating the devlog. I've had a very busy week and I didn't have time at all to write a post as usual on Sunday. So I'm writing the post today.
The migration of the game to the new engine is progressing. However, the working build, so far, doesn't have enough content to create a public demo. The public still has access to the old demo of the game on the IFAction engine. Unfortunately, that engine is very glitchy, and the game does not run for all users, even if their computer meets the minimum system requirements.
Paid subscribers have access to the working build on the new engine, so they can already evaluate the game mechanics.
I have transferred several locations from the first level to the new engine. There is no decorations on the levels yet, so the levels look a bit bland. I will take care of decorations later, when more locations will be ready. But the locations already have the simplest enemy girls. But the enemies, for now, can not be destroyed, because I have not yet programmed the player to be able to attack. But the player can not be killed now, so, at this stage, the player can not be afraid of collisions with enemies.
By the way, I want to say that the game has changed the platform tiles. The thing is that the last version of the game used the standard IFAction engine tiles. I don't know if these tiles can be used in other engines. The support service hasn't responded for a long time. Just in case, I decided to use tiles bought from third-party resources.
Now I need to add an attack feature for the player. I also need a health scale feature. This is what I plan to do next weekend, as I have no time to work on this game on weekdays. As a reminder, I am currently creating images for my second game on weekdays. But more about that in my other posts.
In this post, besides the screenshot of the game, I also want to add my old images. These images though belong, by my design, to another game, but that game also belongs to the universe of tiny witch hunter. Yes, I started thinking about the game a long time ago, and I even started creating the graphics for that game. I really hope that that game, someday, will see the light of day. But it will be later.

Hey I've got a quick question, is this game and the size fetish board game being developed side by side or is one replacing the other.
Also what is the difference between them, this one seems like a platformer, but the other one says the gameplay is outdated so I dont know what you have planned.

They're two completely different games that I'm doing at the same time because I don't want to quit either of them. Final Exam will be a platformer. There's a link to a demo on the old engine in the post. The demo on the new engine is not ready yet. The second game is more like a board game, as the main game mechanics are dice rolls. Demo, for now, is available only with the old gameplay, because for the new demo I still need to finalize some things. A playable working build with the new gameplay is available only to paid subscribers on Patreon and Boosty.

Hi!
It's time to update the devlog!
I'd like to take this opportunity (and because of frequent questions) to remind that, due to my difficult life situation, I can only do game development on weekends when I'm not working at my main jobs. This is why development is going much slower than I would like. Also, I'm developing two games at once in parallel, as I like both of them and I don't want to stop the development of either of them.
This weekend I finally added an attack option for the main character. This turned out to be harder than I thought, as the new game engine is much more complex than the old one. Nevertheless, the attack mechanics work. For now, I'll leave it as it is. Later I will improve the visual component of the attack by changing the bullet sprite and the animation of destroying enemy girls. For now, for the near future, the attack will remain as it is.
I also decided to change the main character sprite in the game. The main character is now much smaller than the enemy girls. And so that the player doesn't get lost among the decorations (which will appear soon), I added a pointer balloon above the player's image (similar to the second game).
Shrinking the main character's sprite gave some advantages, as now animation for him became much easier. I'll think more in the future about how I can improve the visuals.
Now my plans are to paint the scenery so that the level won't be too boring. After that, I need to finish the remaining types of enemy girls needed for the first level. Further work on the locations will follow.
The demo version of the game is still only available on the old engine, because there is still a lot of work to be done to create the new version of the demo. A demo, in my mind, should be a quality demo.
But there is a working build for the new version, which paid Patreon and Boosty subscribers can try out now.
And, just so the post doesn't seem too boring, I'm attaching a thumbnail of one of our old images not related to this game. This full-size image (as well as hundreds of other size-difference images) paid subscribers can find on my Patreon and Boosty)
