Using Paypal on NSFW Patreon accounts?

Posted by CakeInferno 7 years ago

First of all, thanks so much for the overwhelming amount of comments, favorites, and notes on The Orange Fox 2! I know it is and remains a fetish related film, but I still hope that people could enjoy the aesthetics behind it! (:

Before I get to the self explanatory title I have to make the confession that this film was actually supposed to be the last film for me to post here. The reason for that being that I didn't just feel completely burned out, but also that putting so much work into these films and handing them out for free had left me at a pretty bad state, especially with me actually spending time and money into something that wouldn't really get me anywhere, multiple times in a row. I admit that I planned to pull back from this for a few months now for the mentioned reasons. However, after posting this film there were a lot of comments and notes that brought my attention back to Patreon, which actually seems like an option that could actually work. I'd still have to think about the rewards and what to do with it, but if there was actually some money coming from this that would compensate for all the nerve wrecking work that goes into making an animation like this, things would likely look a little different.

The main goal remains to keep these films free for the community, even though I'm not sure if that's attractive enough for patrons to actually pledge. It's likely I'll give this a test run first and see if it can actually work. If I could establish this as a sort of part-time job I'd even be able to post animations more frequently. Likely every two months, rather than once a year. Perhaps it would also be a better goal to keep animations a bit shorter instead of always rendering half a short film.

With Patreon actually supporting NSFW content I was wondering how well that translates to Paypal. But now I've read a few cases that Paypal is not an option when making a NSFW Patreon, yet the Paypal option is still visible on the account I made today. Are there any people here that own NSFW Patreons and manage to get Paypal payouts? I'm still a bit nervous of getting my Paypal suspended for using it with NSFW content, which is clearly against Paypal's guidelines. any ideas, experiences?

Would certainly love to have some help while I'm slowly approaching this. (:

My own Patreon is NSFW (mostly; as with most of your work, there's little "explicit" about it, despite being very much fetish), and I get PayPal payouts just fine. I suspect there's no way for PayPal to ever know it's NSFW to begin with, since you're getting payments from Patreon directly, but I wouldn't know if there might be any way for someone to "call you out" or the like. Again though, the amount of hoops PayPal themselves would have to go through, to find your Patreon account, to determine if it's providing NSFW material, and then manage to link the payments you've been getting to that particular Patreon account... I really don't think they would do anything. As a further vote of confidence, my payouts come from Patreon and are listed simply as "Patreon creator payout", PayPal wouldn't even know what your Patreon account name is. I won't say it's 100% safe, but it certainly seems like a 99% from my perspective.
As an addendum, I believe PayPal is disallowed as an option for pledging to a NSFW account; it's just an option for payouts. So whatever technicality might be there, I think Patreon's got it covered already.

Further on the subject, my own Patreon doesn't offer any exclusive work; it's effectively a "tip jar", and what I've been doing to try and offer more incentive is posting more frequent WIP screenshots of my work, allowing others to submit suggestions, and putting these "Patreon funded" projects up to a vote to decide which ideas actually get worked on. To be honest I haven't been having a ton of luck with the latter of those, I usually only get a couple of suggestions and the voting is just a smattering of people, but despite the somewhat lacking rewards, I'm still getting $50 a month from it currently thanks to some generous supporters. It builds up kinda slowly but you might be surprised at how willing people are to toss in a little extra even without any promise of compensation for it.

So with all of that, my vote is heartily in favor of trying it out. I'm sure you could find some small rewards to give out without having to make anything exclusive - a simple consideration would be posting the high-res animations for Patreon users, and sharing lower-res versions for the public - but even just having everything 100% public and just hosting Patreon as a "when X milestone is reached, a new project starts" would probably pull in at least a few folks.

While I don't use Patreon myself, I get paid through Paypal too, and I've had no problems whatsoever over the past 7 years or so that I've been offering vore commissions for sale. :) I don't think you really have anything to worry about, especially since your vore films are clean vore, not overtly sexualized vore. In other words, that's the type of vore even on cartoons, albeit much more detailed and hotter in the eyes of us voraphiles, that it's hard to even compare the two. xD But, in Paypal's perspective, they wouldn't have very much legal grounds to stand upon if trying to crack down on a non-pornographic film in the sense of it doesn't have two people having sex, even if you created it because of a fetish that we are getting sensual enjoyment from. Like how they can't ban cartoons that have vore scenes, bare feet, weight gain, inflation, etc.. Hope that makes sense, and good luck no matter what you decide! :)

My own Patreon isn't quite NSFW. Never the less, I use Payoneer to get paid, although I have a PayPal set up for it as well. I never had problems with PP personally, but from what I know they're still pretty medieval; People reported getting banned because they got donations for NSFW art... one artist supposedly had their staff check out their website and remove their PP account for what they saw there, as insane as that is! So it might be more or less of a risk... I would like to know more about it too.

In your case I wouldn't worry as much however: Paypal usually has issues with actual porn. If your vore animations don't include that, or aren't way too ostentatious... I don't suspect they will mind, especially not enough to follow you around the internet and look at your Patreon. They're businessmen in suits, why would they even know about a community like us vore fans and what it's about :P

That said, if you ever decide to stop doing such animations, it's understandable and I wouldn't hold it against you. But I so, so, so hope that doesn't happen still...

For an idea of patreon awards (I have no experience with running one) you could just give a sort of dev log and/or a monthly raffle for static methods images; seems to work for people like Karbo who does quality 2D work, and you do quality 3D. :)
