My nose is on fire

Posted by JE-da-Ferret 15 years ago

Well it's about 11:35pm and I'm coming up the stairs to go to bed. My room usually has the windows open because it gets hot in here really easily, but tonight would have to be the night that this happened. About half way up the stairs, it hits me. A god awful stench that made me break my quiet after 11 pm rule for the parents (I'm home for a few weeks this summer). I get upstairs and it's worse. It hits me in the nose with a big S-K-U-N-K! I go to my window and listen. I can hear a cat yowling. Well it didn't take me too long to figure out what had happened. We get a lot of neighborhood cats around here that are basically just menaces. They kill song birds, fight at the early hours of the morning, make an awful racket, get into garbage cans and all that general outdoor cat stuff that makes me want to sic my Jack Russell terrier on them. Well what happened is that one particularly stupid cat must have seen a skunk and thought either it was dinner time or sexy time, either way, there is one very stinky cat in the subdivision right now.

But seriously, these stupid outdoor cats are the worst. My dog trees them in the backyard and keeps them there for hours (which I let him do). I've had to chase them away from the birdfeeder a few times and have come to the point a few times where I'll grab a cap gun and fire off a loud BANG to scare them off. They peak in the early summer, but by mid July, Animal Control has most of them rounded up.

A couple years ago, I saw one in the back yard, stalking birds. This cat had been in my backyard before and had killed several birds and even jumped at ME in the middle of the night when I was changing a light bulb. I opened the back door and released the furry little tornado that is my dog. Either the cat was deaf or too focused because it paid no attention to my dog until he hit it. It was like watching a ship get torpedoed. George (my dog) hurtled across the yard and nailed the cat broadside. It batted a paw at him once and he grabbed it by the neck. I ran out there and knocked them apart with a spray from the hose, but the cat slunk off with a BAD limp. George was completely unscathed and was giving me one of those pure bliss doggie smiles. He had a few chunks of cat fur on his muzzle, but he shook them off. I brought him inside and rewarded him with a piece of turkey (his favorite). Never saw that cat again.

The skunk smell has pretty much dissipated by now, but the cat is still yowling a little. Serves it right, little bastard.

Awww, poor cat.

I can't help it, even when they are rascals I can't watch an animal being hurt, even less hurt it myself.

Huh. I noticed you referred to the cat as "it" and your dog as "he".

We have a similar problem. There are at least 15 cats that breed constantly at the house next door. More than one I've had to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting one. Annoying little bastards. I never really liked cats.

Also, is a skunk's spray really that bad? I've only smelled it when driving by where one got killed, and I've smelled skunk cabbage. Neither weren't that bad.

My cats back home are starting to piss off my family, and me, too. I'm typically lenient toward cats, but they are being just too much for my old man and woman.

Skunks are not my expertise, though; I think I only smelt their odor on family car drives. Blaugh, I hope you've got a working ceiling fan in your room, at least. Or one you can put in your room, but even then it doesn't help 100%.
