Would you prefer quality or quantity?

Posted by Tsavo 15 years ago

Here's a quick question. It takes quite a while as you can see to create a fully detailed piece of art. First it needs to be sketched out, then inked, then flat colored, then shaded, and highlighted. This can take a very long time compared to just a simple ink work. My question to you is, would you prefer I upload un-colored inks amongst my colored works or continue to focus only on pushing out finished pieces. The difference is you will see less colored works and more finished inks, but overall more material. The alternative is the continued pace of a colored work every couple of weeks. Which do you prefer?

Personally, I feel that quality is better, since it proves you did a lot of work. Even though more items is nice, I still feel that if you work hard on it, it rakes in better rewards, and it feels better in the mind, too. I'd hate to put more work on you, though, but I say go with quality. You've got great talent, so express it to the fullest that only a finished work can do. I'll say it again, you've got great talent, so let it show. It may be a lot of work, but it's worth it in the long run.

Well, my standard answer to this kind of questions is the general advice to follow your own mood and needs.

But whatever you do, I would not recommend posting sketchy images where it's hard to recognize what is going on. I have seen some very talented artists (here as well as on other places) doing their art so "fast" that it's a pain to figure out what it's actually supposed to be. Quality should be at least "intermediate".

I myself do something between intermedieate and high - I make a lot of pictures with "intermediate" quality. Black and white line drawings, where the lines may not be 100% clean. Then I may consider turning some of them into higher quality, with colors and shadings.

Reason for this that I have noticed that the last steps to a high quality picture last so much longer than the initial steps. For instance, what often happens is that I have the choice between making 10 intermediate quality images, or just one with high quality. In most cases, I then go for the ten intermediate ones. That also makes it possible for me to make sequences or longer stories.

I say that you do both. ^.^ Lines give people a sense of what you are working on. Color gives them the full view.

I prefer quality over quantity. However, you can post a lineart before finishing with the color if you feel like it.

I always prefer quality over quantity. That being said, I know how boring a single project can get when you're trying to make it perfect. I say do whatever keeps you the most interested in what you do. I always enjoy your work, so whatever keeps you happy keeps me happy. :)

Max.

I agree with Tetsusaiga, quality definitely is worth it, even though it takes a while

I prefer quality too... but I'd say: Do a in-between :P You could put flat-colored works. But still, do as you feel. If you are tired of a pic, don't bother finishing it and you can show what you have done so far. And continue it if you feel like it sometime later.

Anyways, I'm not good at advices >_> Go figure XD

All this blah blah just to say, listen to other's advice, do whatever YOU want to do, but it's true that quality is worth the long time it takes ^^

Quality. I don't see the point of putting out a lot of work if it's rubbish, or of lower quality anyway, to be blunt. I also don't see why you should be pressured into putting more work online than you feel you can do whilst maintaining your standards. That's not the way it should work... ultimately, this is your hobby, and you don't have any obligation to produce more output. If people can't be patient, then bugger them, they don't appreciate your work. It's better to have a smaller gallery of really good pictures than a large one filled with indifferent, mediocre, unfinished, or crap ones.

Quality. I Agree that everyone wants to be able to see new pieces, even if they are in early stages and just ink or line versions, but most have a greater appreciation for a completed artwork and, overall, I do think that the artist themselves will feel much more proud and pleased ^_^

Hmmm, very interesting. Well I appreciate the comments, and it seems the vote is far in favor of quality works. I just wanted to see what people would like from my work, since I work very slowly. I'll continue to do things the way I have, and thanks for the compliments. I really appreciate them, drives an artist forward you know?

Quality. I try to draw good art, but unfortunately, I always have trouble with coloring so I leave it black and white with shading. Still quality all the way!!

I think the level of 'enjoyment' with an artist's work almost always coincides with the detail and effort put into it. That said, a quick sketch, if understandable to a viewer, can sometimes be just as rewarding. I think problems arise when an artist attempts to draw a complicated scene with a minimal amount of effort. In the end, I think quality always win out.

what I would really like is to see both. You could upload the ink when that is done, then upload the color when that's done.

QUAAAALITY!

In my opinion, the #1 biggest problem with Eka's, is that people are so eager to put crap up in their folders that they do a rush job on everything. I mean, yeah, it's all porn, but if you're going to spend time on it, it should be as good porn as we can make it.

When people color and shade and everything it usually doesn't turn out that much better than just line work. This is what I would normally say but you seem to be especially gifted in making final products. You don't just color for the sake of coloring, you color and finalize to give it more life. Stick with quality!

I greatly prefer finished, colored works. Black and whites are okay, and I do have a soft spot for monochrome, but I think fully colored is best.
