WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Pokepark: Pikachu's adventure
Genre: Adventure/Minigame
Developer: Creatures Inc. (Mother/Earthbound series)
Publisher: Nintendo
Time spent on it: around 10 hours

The game I picked up to review this time is quite peculiar. Pokepark: Pikachu's adventure is not your usual pokemon game, being a sort of hybrid of an adventure game with a very simple concept and a small mini-game collection :3 The game is totally aimed toward young pokemon fans, since the gameplay, the plot and the environments are all very simple.

The game starts with Pikachu falling in a dimensional hole created by Mew, along with his friends Charmander, Chikorita and Piplup. He falls at the entrance of a place called Pokepark, a large amusement park abandoned by humans and rebuils so that just pokemon could live in it. Mew summoned Pikachu there to try and bring joy back to the Pokepark, wich had pokemon leaving the place for the sudden unfriendlyness of its leaders, wich leaded to the loss of a legendary prism, wich shattered in different pieces.

To get them back Pikachu haves to go through certain minigames, while also befriending all the pokemon in the park so that they can help him with the minigames and so that pokemon will start coming back to the park.

The graphic look is quite good. Clean and colourful. There are a lot of pokemon through the games and all of them have been modeled very nicely, with nice movements, some of wich have references to the Pokemon Stadium games (the way Golbat wraps his wings around his body, for example). The environments are bright and wide and never repetitive. The framerate is also always steady. Overall, on the graphic standpoint this game looks good enough. Nothing mindblowing, but defenitely looks nice ^^

The gameplay, like I mentioned before, is quite simple. The game asks you to go through 7 different areas to befriend all the pokemon and to face challenges to get the Prism pieces back. To befriend a Pokemon you'll have three ways, depending by the species you're talking to. Tag, Challenge, Hide and Seek and Quiz. Tag and Challenge are the most common.

Tag is what it is...a tag game :3 you'll have to run after the pokemon you have to befriend and litterally tackle into him. The game haves you use the wiimote in the NES-styled way. Using the D-pad does feel a little stiff at the beginning, but you get used to it and while dashing the controls feel quite smoother, so it doesn't really get frustrating. The tag's difficulty depends by the pokemon you are asking, thing that I really like. Challenge a Leafeon and you'll really have a hard time chasing after him, especially if your dash isn't powered up. Even witht hat though you can get to corner even the fastest pokemon if you're smart enough. Some instead are just awfully slow X3 When Slowpoke will ask you for a tag game, well...stay there and laugh at him or compliment him for the effort X3

The Challenge is pretty much a Pokemon battle. An automatic Lock-on will activate on the pokemon you're challenging and you'll have to defeat the pokemon dodging his attacks and launching either thundershocks and Iron tail attacks (Iron tail can be learned just later in the game though). The fights, just like the Tags vary in challenge depending by the pokemon. Some have lower health and speed, some are very quick and hard to avoid, even though this game never really gets anything too hard for a skilled gamer. Let me say though...Despite the very simple gameplay, this proves how fun it'd be to have a pokemon action game, maybe set in the mistery dungeon world >:3

ahem, anyway, next is Hide and seek...it's just what it is...you'll have to find the hidden pokemon. This happens just a few times in the game and is quite simple most of the times. After this it's the Quiz challenge, wich happens just three times through the game and is just a veeeeery simple set of questions.

The health, the dash, the thundershock and iron tail attacks can all be powered up by 4 pokemon you'll find at the center of the park in exchange of berries, wich you'll get by winning minigames or by befriending Pokemon. Other pokemon will be unlocked through the game either by befriending pokemon or achieving certain results in the minigames.

The minigames themselves are of a few different kinds, some being more challenging than others, especially toward the last part of the game. Each minigame can be challenged with the different pokemon you befriended and each of them have a certain record and bonus to break, thing that might be fun for who loves that kind of stuff, especially since every pokemon behaves in a different way depending by its species, speed, power...makes the minigame either hard or easy.

One trouble about this game is that, given the low challenge, at least for the main adventure, it could be too easy for some and action can become repetitive after a while, even though overall the game is well-made, but clearly aimed at young pokefans like I mentioned earlier. The game is quite short too and the story can be cleared in a few days.

The story is very simple, so don't expect intrigues and plot twists like in mistery dungeon either. The soundtrack haves low and high points, some tunes being quite cute (especially pikachu's victory theme and his little victory dance X3).

All in all, this game isn't for everyone, at least not for adult gamers. This doesn't mean it's a bad game though. If anything it's something that just a diehard pokefan can enjoy and people who have a bit of an innocent side. What I'd suggest is to find this game at a cheap price and playing it in small doses. Or just rent it really :3

It isn't astounding, mindblowing or anything, but it's certainly a nice change of pace between a training of a pokemon and the other on the main game series. Something I'm sure other pokefans will be able to enjoy if they feel like it's their kind of game. A relaxing and innocent pokemon game in wich you play as a pika :3....and you kick a charizard's butt! >:3

anyway...here are a few screens:
