"God
is the Light of the heavensand the earth, the parable of His
light is, as it were, that of a niche containing a lamp;the
lamp is in glass, the glass like a radiant star:lit from a
blessed tree,an olive-tree that is neither of the east nor of the
west, the oil whereof would well-nigh give light even though fire
had not touched it;light upon light!God guides unto His light
him that wills;and God propounds parables unto men, since God
has full knowledge of all things."

Maria
drifted through the dark of her sleep within Sessyne, detached from
the world outside. It was easier, this way, she'd found after a few
of the mermaid's sleep cycles. The experience of seeing the world
through Sessyne's eyes was still so new to her that it was simply
easier to detach from her sense

Dive deeply into a drop of water, anda hundred oceans will
flood youLook into a mote of dust, anda million nameless
beings will jump outA hundred harvests rest in a germ of barley
seed, andin the right light, an insect’s wing reflects the
sea.Why be surprised?Deep in the pupil of my eye lie cosmic
rays, and the center of my heartbeats with the pulse of the

“Shall I
part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall
wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have
heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not
think that they will sing to me.
I have
seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing
the white hairs of the waves blown back
When the
wind blows the water white and black
We have
lingered in the chambers of the sea
By
sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human
voices wake us, and we drown.”

Cold
wind whistled through the gorge that cut through the Ascarlin
Mountains, sending a shiver through Lyne that rattled all the way
down to the bone. Below, autumn colors were settling into the woods

cooking dinner as the heat radiated out into the room and melted off
the chill starting to settle in. Snow was rare in Felarya's only
permanent human settlement, but that knowledge did little to make the
winter rains less frigid.L

Adriene always had lunch in the lab. It was probably of questionable cleanliness, but she was always sure to keep her food away from her work.
She took a long draw of her iced tea and considered the sandwich wrap, still sitting in its box from the deli. Lettuce, chicken, tomato and cheese filled the whole wheat wrap, while a trickle of creamy, yellow dressing trickled out of the sandwich. Not too much, nor too little. Just right to fill her stomach and carry her through the rest of a day full

A short story of Crossroads: RMD
~
Syliph groaned, cursing her luck as she walked through the park known as the Savage Garden. The members of RMD - except for Kesa, their leader, of course - had drawn straws as to who would go on patrol in the 7th Restricted District that night, and she had drawn the short straw. "Have fun," Ketran had said with a snicker as she protested the result. "Watch out for the trees-- I hear their bark isn't what you need to worry about..."
