The Ke'yep people, who are currently organized as the Bollar Freeholds, are one of the three major forces in the Imperishable Legacy when Earth first encounters them. Having recently been under the constant pressure of incursions by the Imperishable Empire and a cold war with the Siluvaran Confederacy, they are largely a nomadic culture dependent heavily upon colony ships that travel in space and congregate around stars. Part of it was how easy it was to stick to the first person single perspective. IIRC there were many other issues that people brought up with Ian Scranton besides the lack of relating to the personal. I expected those to surface here until I could get down to spotting and fixing them.
Imrhys - 11 years ago
BTW, this was as clean a copy, grammar & punc, as you ever did in EPWG. And not sure why you thought this needs a "severe beating." You've improved since Ian days. You have taken the lesson well to heart that "audiences relate to the personal not the universal." Major improvement over the Ian days. Major.

As exo-symbiote adults they would be nothing more than an annoyance. Their prey would simply get rejuvenated.
Remember from the story that the Nivalavi fairies have a strict religious rule: all Silurhean children caught in the path of a Nivalavi army (in this case the Nangwaya tribe) must be taken to Daelath camps. All unarmed civilians not caught casting offensive spells, and all warriors who lay down their arms are to be taken to the camps. Zero exception. Their goddess demands it.
These prisoners are forced to go without meat and turn into exo-symbiotes. Without a Silurhean home to go back to, they are forced to live with the Nangwaya, merging with them and adding genetic diversity to their highly exogamic populace.
Rijaal Haj-Bollar's mistake was so big because he hijacked the Biashal tribe into ignoring Nangwaya religious law (which their people informally agreed to follow).
Here's Rijaal's reasoning: If the Imperishable Empire arrived, they would not have been able to handle these prisoners, what with them all being needed in a war against interstellar invaders. The Nangwaya would have had a rude awakening coming.
Chieftain Linjara knew that risk was real. She was biding time to think of a solution, and then Roshana showed up with a solution: bring the mighty Siluvarans into the fight. And even THAT presented more problems, like the fear that the Siluvaran arch magi (the Matrons) would come and turn the Bollars into fairies again.
That's why Linjara pledged that her armies would stop any such Matrons from coming to Absegami. But by then Clanlord Rijaal was tired of her overriding his agenda, and he let his agenda blind him.
BTW: I've **RULES** in place in my universe that prevent children from eating people and also prevent people from eating children. Seriously. There's plenty of adult prey in this story line to last a LIFETIME...

They're not all Caucasians. Tuyen Pham is a child of this group; she's of Vietnamese descent. There's also blacks, Hispanics and several other ethnic groups in the mix. They also never ventured near the Bollar army.
The Cerulean Dawn were hidden by the handful of Psi-Mages in their group; but their affairs are not actually within the scope of this story.
Time was not on the Cerulean Dawn's side with regards to staying hidden. For one their half-fairy children are one hell of an anomaly. But they've been lucky so far, and very low-key. Now that the galaxy is coming to this planet they have been saved by the bell: now they can come out and blend in with the flood of tourists and other groups that will converge on the planet.

Cerulean Dawn is once again a pivotal player in events... and as always I have no idea of their motives, origins, or methods. O_o
You'd think Caucasian soldiers would be easier to notice in a Bollar army, though; maybe it was assumed they were part fairy or something. Or the armor really is just THAT concealing.

And McD finally bested out BK and all it's other corporation in this storyline until the clown's reign was ended by a younger, fiercer company that was in turn devoured by a younger, fiercer subsidiary company... @_@

"Sans selves" may not go as the Africans plan; then again, some don't even care, especially those liberal Africans who don't have psychic abilities.
And if they can breed psychic abilities into fairies, they're REALLY not going to care if the two species merge.
LordVengeance - 15 years ago
Making the entire Earth (sans selves) obsolete is quite a feat, but they do seem to be achieving it.
jacquelope - 15 years ago
The African Union got tired of their continent and peoples being everyone's bitch. They just want payback for over a THOUSAND years of exploitation.
This is not dissimilar to the Russians when they formed the Soviet Union; except the African Union hasn't taken over neighboring countries to form an "Iron Curtain". Instead the AU wants payback by making the Earth Federation obsolete... and isolated, too.
The fairies come to civilize humans in a slow but inexorable siren song-style reverse-invasion. The African Union has turned this to their advantage, making themselves the recipient of the benefits. Remember that blog I wrote about "Columbia"? Yeah, these guys have a different, opposite perspective on that.

I actually do have a theological question for you, however, or perhaps a request would be better; are there any other Gods, Goddesses, Titans, Mythos, Fates, Dooms, and/or Destinies of which I should be aware? What are their names and natures? Who worship them, and what strange artifacts might they cause in this world?
Metaphysical phenomena like the Bloodvine and Erubu always seem to make me curious. Is it a warring Duality, a Trinity at odds, or a whole Pantheon of which we were completely uninformed?

One of Tuyen's Meluwe was the one killed by Roshana in Chapter 6. Interesting point about Henna; but Henna is pregnant. Not even the Biashal would let any pregnant fairy die. That goes TOO far for them. Else Tuyen would have chopped her head off, barehanded.
KavenBach - 16 years ago
Okay, this chapter went down (pun intended) a LOT easier than the last two. >_<.
So Shahab's people are starting to prove themselves in terms of being humane (Or would that be "Siluvane?" (: ). More and more I'm seeing the humans here are the bloodthirsty corrupt ones. Social statement, much, sir? >_<.
The escape sequence was a little confusing --- I had a tough time figuring out who was doing what --- but I must say it was nice to see Ian put his new empowered body to good use. I daresay he returned the favor to Roshana for saving her life... he only owes her for, like, twenty more times now. XD
On that note, interesting that said fairy --- Tuyen Phan? --- would have sent her, uh, "meluwa" into that room in the first place... or was she referring to someone else than Ami? One of the two Roshana killed in self-defense? It wasn't entirely clear to me. Upon re-reading I'm guessing it was one of the two Roshana killed in Self-Defense. Curious, though, that Tuyen would then help protect Henna from the guns...
Meh, I'm just nitpicky today. :) I would have liked to see what Ian wanted to do to Nidale though... ;)

She is indeed quite a specimen, and a rather impressive one at that... let's ensure she and "L" never, ever, ever meet, though. Two well known occasional criminals with completely and utterly different viewpoints in life- and they'd probably hate each other's guts. *note to self- ask permission in one years time to write story where they do meet somehow*

She sounds quite admirable. :D Well done on creating a character who's heroic without succumbing to absurd superheroism, principled in a credible way, and sexy but not stereotypically vapid. She sounds like some someone who deserves looking up to, while retaining a distinctly individual and human personality.

The History of the Ke'yep Steam War
The word “Bahamalu”, in modern times, means “fairies with purple soul auras.” Literally, it means “between good and evil”. Bahamalu fairies can devour flesh of some sort and become hakaf - carnivores - for another 19 Earth standard years, at least; or, they can choose the path of exo-symbiosis, which means they can never be meat eaters again, which means they will be called Se'yawa (for males) or

Ian's journey takes him to the center of the action, where a sleeping army - a once-starfaring clan of Bollar humans - is about to awaken.
This is the first appearance of the Bollars in any of my stories, and it certainly won't be the last that is ever heard of this particular clan. But, their story will come in full later. Right now, it's the Ian Scranton show - and from now on, the Ian and Roshana show.
KavenBach - 16 years ago
It still amazes me how Self-Defense is considered a capital crime... even though that is precisely the excuse these people are using to commit genocide. :| What was Roshana supposed to do, LET them stab a knife through her face too? What's her crime, if not that she refused to die like a good girl? I can't wait to see what happens when she reveals --- possibly through that interrogation --- her true origins. I've gathered that she has a few secrets... now wouldn't it just SUCK if these murderers discovered she'd been sent to find them and decide if they deserved rescue from space... >_<.
To me the "Incorruptible Children" are more corrupt than the Silhureans. At least the Silhureans eat because they have to; Nidale's twisting of what she saw in Ian's mind (essentially, she raped him body and mind) is the perfect example of how misled these poor creatures are.
Ian felt a little wierd in this one though... after being mind-raped it might make sense, but the two extremes --- breakdown over Hollani, then tears of laughter within five minutes --- is a little hard for me, personally, to swallow...
Heh. This wasn't supposed to be a review. >_<.

Thanks for the comments - wow, I actually managed to get the story across the way I'd intended. I edited these 2 chapters a million times to get it right. (And I still had to do another edit on the last part! @_@)
Roshana's survival is up for grabs. They were not kidding when they said she should wish for a summary execution.
Oh and rest assured, while Ian the character (and most importantly, you the reader) landed smack dab in the middle of the story of the Arajo Freehold, the full story of Arajo people and their fairy allies will be told.
French_snack - 16 years ago
Wow... Quite a few twists in these two chapters - even if they were foreshadowed by an extreme sense of danger in the previous one. Your descriptions and attention to detail are, as always, incredibly good. The complex interplay of relations between groups and between individuals remains fascinating.
Hollani's sudden death was a shock. It was almost as if I could witness it through Roshana's experiences, picturing the scene. It was very effective indeed, and drove home the point that the danger *is* real; their enemies *are* lethal (all the more so because of their blind prejudice). It also makes me think that it would not be impossible for Roshana to die to - even if I'm still expecting her to survive. It's not often a writer can create a real sense that his characters' survival is at stake.
Salkani's death saddened me too, although it was nice to see the Arari again.

LordVengeance - 16 years ago
There are seldom truly evil people in war- they reserve their talents for peacetime, wherein they are guaranteed a place in history for the slaughter of innocents. There are fanatics and good people who serve them or work alongside them in war, people of conscience who often regret taking a life even when necessary, and those that enjoy killing but do their deeds so that others will not be killed. And evil often depends on one's point of view. To a Masque, any kind of vore would be evil, whether it be oral digestion or renewing unbirth/rebirth. To a Silhuran meat eating is not only nutritious but a blessed, god-sanctioned calling.. and as much of a taboo to a Bollar as it would be to a Masque. To the Silhurans the Bollar's blessing from Gaia would be disturbing, unnatural, and perverse, as it would seem to non-voraphiles. The problem arises when conflicting viewpoints meet in phyical conflict and leave people like Hollani dead, and in the death of innocents there is a tragedy that moves bystanders to claim the commiters are evil. Callous, yes. Harsh and unforgiving, yes. Evil- no, I do not think so. People die in war. Full cities of people that want to eat you are just an opportune target to destroy or avoid... but that is just the musings of a fanatic who believes everything dies eventually and views the world accordingly.
Anyway... I meant to say I enjoyed this, but I was sidetracked by a comment on fanatism and the evil, and I waxed philosophic. So: I enjoyed this.
jacquelope - 16 years ago
These aren't Siluvarans, they're the wild exo-symbiotes. And the Bollars killed all those fairies because the Silurheans would EAT them. They just misjudged two particular ones. That fairy city you just read being blown up? They'd have hunted and eaten the Bollars if they could. It's not so much fanaticism as it is about survival. I'll make sure to get to this in Chapter 8...
KavenBach - 16 years ago
Hmm... personally I think Gaia should retract her blessing from fairies like those.
Tell me, is it normal that right now I want the Silhureans to wipe out all the others on that planet, and the more gruesomely, the better?
I guess I just have an innate hatred for ANY fanatics... and you, sir, have made it clear that the Siluvarans and Bollars are evil fanatics.

#13 - yeah, fairies could pretty much fireball their way out of captivity in any human facility in the 21st century. Or teleport. One fairy could kick a LOT of 21st century human ass. But they'd rather breed with us.

Hey, Mr K! As usual you've got all the hard hitting questions ^_^
#3 - Carnivorous fairies do not share memories. They can't. Unless they devour someone and absorb their memories that way. O_O
#10 - Elves are out there. There's just few of them left, thanks to interbreeding.
#12 - That's from future stories.
#13 - You'd have to break her limbs to do anal sex on her without getting punched or kicked. And then fairies quickly heal broken bones... yeah, that can get ya hurt...
#14 - Excellent question. Most excellent. The answer is yeah, that would kill her, because all of his bodily cells are made digestion-proof by exo-symbiosis. BTW no one knows how to determine who has been made digestion-proof. O_O
KavenBach - 17 years ago
#2: The best kind of fairy as far as I'm concerned. But that's just me. >_<.
#3: "Male fairies rarely kill females for any reason, they'd rather have as many lovers as they can handle." Assuming they don't mind sharing their memories with all those females, I assume?
#10: Wait, "elf?" I must've missed something somewhere. Also, I'm starting to hate fairy women more and more. Our women deserve better.
#12: O_O; ...I think I need to read the rest of the Ian Scranton series... ^^;
#13: Interesting reasoning! Makes a lot of sense! And humans who happen to have the ability to cast anti-magic will no one more way to punish her... ehh, that's my nature speaking, apologies. ^.^;
#14: Well, at least human women have *one* tiny advantage... hmm. Question: a man who has been Exo-Symbiotized (or whatever the word would be), will kill a carnivorous fairy if she tries to eat him. If by some chance a carnivorous fairy got some of such a male's sperm down her throat... would that destroy her?! O_o Whoa...

jacquelope - 17 years ago
Simple: they gang up. Especially against Vader - he has the power of Force Drain, basically sucking the life force out of someone at a distance. He is especially dangerous to fairies.
LordVengeance - 17 years ago
Hmmm. All right, I shall. Wraiths (with cursed blades) and Masqued (all weapons blessed) will probably comprise the *effective* fighting force, and the others the *main* fighting force. Should I warn my troops about the Fae using "mortal" weapons as well as their own inntate powers, or would it be more emotional to let them find out on their own?
Final question (for now), but this one isn't intended to be serious.
1. How do, or would, the Fae fight... THE DARK LORD?
Y'know... Sauron... Vader... MAYBE Voldemort... recently Aizen/ Madara...and of course the Lich Lord Michael Jackson? And others. The ones with so much magical ability, or ability in the Force, or whatever their talents are, that all contenders are cut to ribbons? Do they gang up on the stronger foe? Does one eat the others and take on the Dark Lord mano-a-mano? Or do they have Chosen One/Dark Lord specific tactics to destroy any hyper strong human weirdos?
jacquelope - 17 years ago
A katana against a fairy in my universe had better be blessed, or you'd better score a beheading unnoticed. Yes, fairies astonish the hell out of humans by picking up and using gatling guns. Fairies using gatling guns... everyone laughs at that until the bullets fly. My fairies do not eat magic from a distance. They absorb life force in their stomach to get magic energy. Getting you in her belly is quite easy though.
If you hit a fairy in the spine be sure to follow up with a shot to the head or else you may wind up getting teleported into her belly where you'll die painfully so she can heal even faster.
Fairies have to deal with Ringwraiths/Nazguls as equals. They don't just eat magic from a distance; but would a Ringwraith's magic be absorbed if they got eaten? Good question. Still, a fight with a Nazgul is a fight indeed. However, beware of male fairies, they can cast anti-magic. But then a Nazgul would have no magic and thus little value when eaten. Hmmm.
Fairies can also insta-heal. It requires spending some magic energy though.
BTW drop me a PM if you have more questions!

Male Fairies - The Few and the Proud
Male fairies, either exo-symbiotic or carnivorous, are vastly outnumbered. Also, in the case of exo-symbiote groups, male fairies inevitably submit their knowledge to the women via exo-symbiotic absorption, contributing to a powerful female aristocracy/gyno centric political system.
However, fairy males make up for it in a lot of ways.

Love, Fairy Style
"Where I come from..."
On Earth, men fight each other over women. It is a known truth that most men will never reproduce, but most women will. The prevailing wisdom is that men are more expendable, since it only takes one male to impregnate a lot of women.
There are many reasons why this is the case, and some say this is necessary.
But among fairies, things are quite different. Quite the opposite, in fact. There is a reason why hum

Fairy mating rituals, explained
Imrhys - 16 years ago
Ask a woman how she deals with the male dominated world we live in today, lol. Then you have your answer, or at least a flavor of it. You'd have to ask about a hundred women to even begin to get a handle upon how they feel on the topic...
jacquelope - 16 years ago
I've thought of it. Fairies are in NO way familiar with the idea of one woman having two or more guys in her sexual/romantic group, whatever they call it.
There would be problems, primarily two:
1) Fairy males don't like to share. That's because they haven't ever HAD to. (Anyone can, however, write MMF situations in. Just be sure to provide a little justification...)
2) Some human males may be okay with sharing a woman, but when they come to fairy land, fairy women, facing a shortage of men, will do their absolute DAMNEDEST to divide the men from each other and conquer them as mates.
Bisexual men will present fairies with... an issue. Well worth addressing.
By the way just so you know... it occurred to me recently that the "excess of women" idea doesn't look so paradise-like when played through logically. To JUSTIFY such a scenario you must have a superior female-to-male birth rate, and a woman-heavy population evolves into a gyno-centric world (matriarchy, as we often call it). A harem? Oh, no, not possible in the long term - women will force their way on you and it won't always be what you want. Let's start with your house being decorated mostly to suit women! Pink colors, flowery stuff and fluffy slippers, oh my! You're catering primarily to female emotions and women-centered goals from birth to death and sunrise to sunset. Think of what women deal with in "a man's world" and turn it upside down.
You as a guy get your way when you get sufficiently pissed off.
It's actually making me proud to see my own theme subverted or perhaps even deconstructed. That gives me more room for drama and unpredictable story development!

Hmmm...
This makes for some interesting possibilities for humans with open marriages meeting your exo-symbiosis women. But what could happen if a pair of human couples that shared an open relation ran across some Siluvaran females?
Would there be a problem with two human males being in one Meluwen? And just how messy could this get? Would other Meluwen being understanding of one Meluwen getting two males at once? I realize this is one major "what if" question, but curious to if you have thought about this at any point >_>

Okay so yes I'm finally nosing my way around your "files" and look what I stumble upon but a most interesting "footnote".
I'd argue that carnivorous fairies or anyone else that can detect auras IF they had enough skill they would be able to detect the subtle changes to any being "altered" by exo-symbiosis. But mind you in my experience this change would be, like in the case of a human with their pale white auras, the aura would not change color but instead it's brightness would change.
So if you were not highly observant OR did not have a before and after comparison to work off of, this would be near impossible to notice. Just my opinion from a few years of running vampire, the masquerade and all the aura reading auspex makes possible in there for skilled or creative *the most annoying sort at times!!!* players.

The Energy Crisis, Part 1
Revised 11/10/2009
Those who have encountered fairies - both exo-symbiotes and carnivores alike - inevitably come to ask themselves... why? What is the fairies' obsession with devouring or absorbing (via exo-symbiosis) humans and other fairies?
The reason is simple. A fairy needs fuel to cast spells. This fuel is often called mana. A fairy with no fuel left for spellcasting is as vulnerable as any other animal their size. A fairy with no

The Mechanics of Exo-Symbiosis
Exo-Symbiosis, also known as "Gaia's Blessing" among Siluvarans, or "Tarajika's Gift" to the Nivalavi, is arguably the most complex and powerful magic ability in the universe. Not even the dreaded realm of psychic abilities has any power remotely equivalent to this. Exo-symbiosis is considered a magic ability by those wishing to take a tribalist (the ongoing multi-species "cold war" battle for supremacy betwe

What the heck is Gaia's Blessing? It's all explained here!
Imrhys - 16 years ago
"Only purple or blue soul aura fairies (of which Siluvarans are a subset) can perform this act, initially, although years of intense research by human women (mages) eventually makes this ability available to human women, taking humanity in a radical new direction." <- now that is highly interesting and though my Minx is directly of your world, does give me some interesting "crossover" thoughts (vaguer things then full ideas) because of how Minx can absorb her prey's life force fully into herself and restore them completely, even if the energy ratios would be sizeably different (different mechanism for the process).
But this does give me thoughts for perhaps the first human exo-symbiosis as a short story. If you have not already done one yourself >_>

Soul auras and their meaning.
Changes: updates, primarily clarifications for the Yellow soul aura entry.
jacquelope - 15 years ago
Many alien animals of the yellow aura type probably were white aura in the beginning. There is no reason that there won't be MANY white-aura alien species that are discovered to be the predecessors of yellow-aura (transgenic) animals.
LordVengeance - 15 years ago
Almost all of Earth's products are white aura, as opposed to the yellow aura-ed beings vaguely related to faeries. Bearing in mind the backstory you told us for the rise of the fairies (and later Siluvarans and Silurheans), I would like to pose this question:
If what we see today amongst the alien cultures is largely the result of meddling, both in science and in magic, what of the origins? If it's yellow now, was it previously, or ever, white?
KavenBach - 17 years ago
*DOOR SLAMS SHUT ON THE IDEA TROTTING IN MY HEAD* Matter of author's choice on the first thing then, eh? >_<.
On the second point, I mean instead of a human going into a giantess fairy, a shrunken male fairy going into a normal-sized human woman. Whereas a human will be absorbed by a fairy's womb and "energize" her before being re-built with a clean slate, perhaps a shrunken male fairy could force the process in reverse inside a human woman. He would de-materialize and be reborn the same way a human would inside a fairy, except the power would spread inward to him instead of outward. Grr, does that make any sense?
If it did... maybe that would be another way to call out latent powers in the human woman... or to turn her into a fairy... or just make her indigestible.
jacquelope - 17 years ago
Nah. No cock vore. Human comedians and artists have a good time irritating male fairies with these fantasies, though. Not sure I understand the second idea.
KavenBach - 17 years ago
You know, I know this surely isn't your cup of tea, but have you considered maybe having the rare male Blues be able to perform a kind of "reverse" exo-symbiosis? If he can shrink a human woman down enough to do a cock-vore thing, could he not theoretically perform the same absorb/reconstruction thing as his females do with humans? Just food for thought... I feel sorry for them otherwise. ^_^
Or, more along your liking maybe, why not shrink himself and act as the "victim" (willing probably), somehow restoring a human woman a bit the way a blue female would restore a human inside her womb? Evidently this way the human woman can't be absorbed and rebuilt though...

First of all, it cannot possibly be overemphasized that whenever one leaves the Sol system, it is of absolute importance that one brings with them some form of Barrett-Takashi (BT) Scanner gear. LordVengeance - 16 years ago
Ahhhh... I meant to use the scanner to help him locate NON-Fairy life forms. For fairies and other creatures of magic, "L" has a small but effective arsenal of tools and tactics... I wonder, should I record their properties somewhere so you know what to expect? As you can tell from my story he does not have "God Mode" or "Bankai" or other releases of power, but he does have some useful stuff.
jacquelope - 16 years ago
Be warned, many fairies in this universe can see your soul aura at a longer distance than your BT scanner can see theirs. Through other objects, no less. Eyepatch scanners would have the LEAST range of all - probably 100 meters. And they won't easily see a fairy through other objects.
Being sneaked upon by a carnivorous fairy can be very bad news; you wouldn't want to include the Rikati fairies in your story because a Rikati can teleport you into his/her stomach before you're in range to see them.
