Decent story, but the bit in the beginning about the mother enlisting a dragon to guard her daughter, and then pays mercenaries to kill the same dragon guardian when all she had to do is say, hey, my daughter is getting married now so we don't need you any more. Why risk the dragon's ire, if the mercenaries didn't succeed, or the dragon has relatives that might get revenge. Apparently you wanted to make the Mother and husband seem 'more evil', but it just makes them seem stupid. If the dragon wasn't an extremely dangerous guardian why hire him in the first place, and why pointlessly risk getting killed by it by trying to have it assassinated for absolutely no reason. In fact, having this dragon be the same dragon, now out of a job, and who joined the trolls with no place else to go, would make far more sense if you wanted a dragon in the story, and they would unite and he could be her Guardian again.

I did a bit of research when writing this and the longer spears that were made to be used in the phalanx formation were called phalanx spears. This ending was deliberately rushed so I could focus on the main story that I am still finishing, however, I tried to show that this dragon is slowly being worn down from all its fights. I am trying to make my stories somewhat realistic. I do understand that suspension of disbelief is necessary I was just amused that you mention my least realistic story thread was realistic.

Oh and there is no such weapon called a "phalanx". A phalanx is a military formation in which soldiers form a shield wall with locked shield and spear. If you have been watching Game of Thrones you would know how well that works against fire spewing dragons.

In order to appreciate fantasy stories with extraordinary characters like dragons and centaurs, we must exercise some suspension of disbelief that these characters could be real in this fantasy world. Given the fact we now know there actually were flying reptiles with nearly a 50 foot wingspan and a 10 foot long head living on our own world millions of years ago, then large flying dragons are not to hard to take seriously. Some scientists have even come up with plausible biological ways a huge reptile could spew fire. But if the story is realistic, these characters should exhibit the kinds of abilities and strength as similar creatures in our own world. Thus a Centaur the size of a horse would be expected to have roughly the same abilities as a horse and man of our world, and not superhuman abilities. This is one example how a writer can make their fantasy writing seem realistic to the intelligent adult reader. One of the easiest things for writers of fantasy stories to come across as unrealistic is how easy it is for their heroes to kill large, intelligent dragons, probably because they have read so much childish, fairytale rubbish written by people who simply do not understand the abilities of actual humans and dangerous predator animals. Scientists tell us that humans never would have survived in a world inhabited by large carnivorous dinosaurs, let alone large carnivorous dinosaurs with human intelligence, that can fly, and have built in flame throwers. I can now see you are unable to grasp such things so I can no longer take your fantasy writing seriously.

I like your idea about the shadow dragon being the dragon from the start, it did not occur to me at the start. The presence of a shadow dragon was part of the request and I added the guard dragon so that it might fit in the "Knights, Dragons and Princesses" universe that I have created for my other stories. I did kill the dragon off to make the mother seem more villainous. The way I saw it happening is Nora is 20 which means that challengers have been trying to win her hand in marriage for 2 years Azur was a softy with Nora but not in battle. The mother found what she believed to be the perfect match and took no chances that Ahoshta might be defeated so she cheated.
