Its title was Fairy Lore of the World, and its pages were filled with faded illustrations: tiny winged beings, figures dancing atop flowers, glowing eyes deep within the forest.

Elli sat with her back to a large, soft-barked tree, and watched the aftermath, with Charles perched once more on her knee. She felt shaken still, and yet also strangely detached. Her gaze travelled absently over what the Felaryans, her friends and acquaintances in this savage place, were doing, as though she barely knew them.
