The desecrated church crouched in the rotting guts of East Los Angeles like a gutted carcass, its once-white steeple blackened by decades of graffiti and pigeon shit. Stained-glass windows had been smashed years ago; jagged holes let the sodium-orange streetlight bleed inside, painting the cracked altar in sickly hues.
