The next day was hectic for the school thanks to Scott. Before school started four guys tried to ask their girlfriends to the dance and two of them were at the same place at the same time. This ended up in arguments between the girls who were there. It got a little physical but Ms. Stone showed up in time to deescalate the situation. One of the guys also got into hot water for initiating his plan so quickly and half baked. One got in trouble with his girlfriend for doing the EXACT same thing as Scott. Only it was just one bouquet of lavender and she didn’t even like lavender so she broke up with him on the spot. Needless to say a lot of the remaining guys learned to wait and think their proposals through. Rumor has it another three other guys canceled their plans for after school attempts.
The wrestling team got to see glimpses of them all while working out before school. After a particularly long set of lap the girls got a short breather to grab water. Some were too out of breath to talk but Jenni, Blair and Valeri's friend, always had something smartass to say. “You guys like the shows as much as I did. I didn’t know guys could be so ignorant.” she said half laughing… well more like wheezing. “Well you’d be surprised.” Blair said under her breath. Both girls heard her though. “Oooooooh trouble in paradise.” Jenni said, teasing her. “What?! N-no!” Blair said embarrassed. Valerie even said “I thought things were good with Brennan.” “That’s because he’s great! Amazing even! I was talking about my shitty brothers!”
“Oh…” there was an uncomfortable silence. “Aaaanyway, how has studying been going?” Jenni said switching the subject. “I actually want to do really well this quarter so the dance will be all the better!” Jenni looked proud of herself for finding her motivation. “Did a guy ask you yet?” Blair asked. “Nope.” Jenni said. Val rolled her eyes. “Hey don’t roll your eyes at me! This whole extra running thing this morning is YOUR fault. You just had to get this whole school riled up with these crazy invitation proposals.”
“How is that MY fault! It wasn’t even FOR me!” Blair laughed “How is XANDER anyway.” Jenni and Blair both gave her an eager look for gossip. “It’s… been slow. I haven't been going to see him before class because of the big tests this month. Every morning I’ve been helping you knuckleheads study. I’ll make some more moves soon.” “Nooooooo!” Jenni whined. “You gotta go with me!” She joked. “Nu-uh YOU gotta find someone too.” “Lame.”
The day was like most. It was quiet. Almost too quiet. It was like everyone knew the students were on thin ice because of the chaos before school. Word had gotten around and everyone was acting like angels. The principal didn’t make any announcements that day either as Mrs. MacAurthur could tell they all understood the faculty was pissed. Ms. Stone still wanted to have a word but it was said to be unnecessary. Even the Mixing activity was somewhat boring that day. A lot of people have been pairing up over the last week and it began to be clear which guys would be dating who. The reason the mixing activities happened all the way to the end of the school year was because teen romances tended to come and go. One bad date, or dance invite, and things could get wild real fast.
As school was wrapping up Alejandro packed up quickly and started to head out. “Where are YOU going in such a rush?” Xander said jokingly. “Oh, uh, I have to see dad today so I gotta beat everyone to the elevators. Carrie $20 if you take me there right now.” Carrie perked up and got out of her desk. Xander sat up “Your dad? Do yo-” “I have to go.” Carrie, who had been paid for this as well, plucked Alejandro and left a minute early.
“That won’t end well.” Vito said right behind Xander, scaring him. “DAH! Jeez dude don’t sneak up on me like that.” Xander looked back at the door but Alejandro was gone. “Do you really think Al’s in for it?” “Yeah… He’s been doing just okay so far this year and that always makes him feel worse afterwards. He only gets long talks with his dad if he does well or poorly. He actually prefers getting yelled at over just being told. ‘Do better’ and then be excused. For once… I hate that I’m always right.” Xander rolled his eyes at that last part.
“Fuck that old man.” Xander said.
The next day Xander and Vito were expecting the worst from Alejandro. He had a tendency to be a little belligerent after talking with his dad. To both of their surprise he showed up just like the day before and worked just as hard as the day before. During break Xander leaned over “Hey man are you-” “Fine.” He whispered back. Minimum words used just like the day before. This time however the school wasn’t in a total unspoken agreement to be cool that day.
Alice even noticed that he was acting off at lunch. She sat down and said. “How was the mixing activity for you guys today? I got stuck with that dweeb who got dumped yesterday.” Xander said “Oh I got stuck with that one girl I told you about before, the real chatty one from 4-D. I couldn’t get a word in.” Vito laughed. “Well I think I had the girl from 4-A enchanted. She was a real poetry wiz.” “Oh really?”Alice said “Oh yeah you should be worried Alice I may have found the one.” The pair chuckled a rich snobby chuckle. “What about you Alejandro? Should I be worried about it?”
Alejandro opened his mouth. He looked like he was about to either say something cheesy to flatter Alice or something with bravado to make himself look better but that spark of life left as quickly as it came “No.” Is all that puttered out as he took another bite of the small food made for the centimeter tall men. “Are you-” “Fine.” He said. Cutting Alice off. Causing a raised eyebrow by everyone. Alejandro could tell he overstepped and somewhat shrank in his seat. No one said anything else to him at lunch after that.
As school ended he remained just as quiet. He wasn’t rushing but Alejandro did his best to be in the front of the elevator line. On the way out Alice however was stopped by Anna in the stairwell of the school. “Hey Alice, you got a second?” Alice was surprised. Anna didn’t normally talk to her. Even in class. “Yeah what’s going on?” “Oh I was just wondering if there was anything in particular Alejandro likes?”
Alice was confused “What? Why? I mean yeah he was a little upset today but why do YOU care.” “Oh you remember from the restaurant. When I yelped I mean. I sell art online and Alejandro wore it to that dance thing he went to last weekend. That helped me out a lot and I could tell he was stressed this week so I’d figure paying him back might make him feel better.”
Alice was still a little lost. “Wait, wait, wait. You sell art?” Anna nodded “Yeah I mean it’s not anything crazy, just fanart stuff. It blew up though and has still been doing really well online.” “Oh wow, how come you never bring it up?” “Honesty, it's kind of embarrassing.” “But you talked with Alejandro about it?” “Well yeah, he wanted someone to open up a bit to and I offered.” “Wait so he went to you?” “No, it was at a mixing event last week.”
Alice remembered that the other day Anna stuck up for Alejandro. She felt a little dejected. “And he didn’t come to me…” “uh…yeah and he talked to me about some things and then I opened up to him. He got excited when I mentioned my art.” “WHY YOU!” Alice said angrily. Anna was too surprised to reply. “First Xander starts acting all independent and stops hanging out and now Alejandro opens up to you before me?! Did I do something wrong? Why are all my friends leaving me!?”
Alice started to cry in the midst of her emotions and Anna had no idea it was going to turn into this. Anna hugged Alice “It’s okay, it’s okay. Alejandro still loves you a lot.” “Then why didn’t he come to me?” Anna thought about what to say “W-well…” Alice gasped. “Was he talking about me!? I DID do something! What was it!” Anna sighed, “It’s not what you did, it's what you haven't been doing.” “What?” “Alejandro feels the same way you do. He feels like Xander left your group, well kind of. He HATES Vito but he's the only one he can pal around with and well… you don’t seem interested in any of the guys after you so he feels strung along.”
Alice couldn’t really say anything to that. Xander had felt similar and was open about it. Alice THOUGHT she was doing better about giving her suitors more space. She leaned against the wall and slumped down “How do I fix this.” She said defeated. Anna sat down next to her. “What do you WANT” Anna asked. “I think you don’t know and that has been causing your issue. Do you want these suitors or do you want to be free to date Wyatt?” Alice looked at her. “Brennan told me. If you want to try meeting other people then you have to let these guys go.”
Alice thought about Xander and how he was still her friend after getting some space. “I… I think you might be right. I just don’t want to lose all my friends.” Anna put her hand on Alice's hand. “You also still have friends here. Us girls gotta stick together too.” Alice sniffled. “Thanks. Maybe we’ll do something fun. Just the ladies of 4-B” “That's a great idea but you might want to watch out for Vikki right now. When she hears that you tricked Wyatt to the dance she’s gonna be pissed.”
Alice snickered at that, finally smiling through her breakdown. “Oh please, she didn’t claim him yet either. I’m going to work my feminine wiles on Wyatt until either of them decides what THEY want. I’d accept it if they tried already but I’m not going to just wait around. Besides, I bet she doesn’t even know HOW to dance with a guy.” Anna sighed out of disapproval but agreed. “Do YOU?” “Oh yeah, Alejandro loves dancing, remember?” “Oh yeah, do you think he’d like some music or something?” “/What do you mean like music?”
Anna clapped her hands “Focus Alice remember, the reason I wanted to talk.” “Oh y-yeah right. Something nice for Alejandro.” Alice thought for a moment out loud “He doesn’t like stuff, he likes doing stuff. Music and dancing, he's got everything he likes already at home. He likes working out but he does that alone so maybe like… lessons. No, that won't work. He already knows enough to teach me. Plus he likes to be the one in charge.”
Anna was starting to form an idea. “Would he like bossing everyone around?” Alice laughed, “Oh he’d love that. His favorite part of the dancing lessons we did was me having his full attention and all the thanks I gave him afterwards.” “I think I know what to do now but I might need your help.”
