Hmm. I'd still argue that a 'good' creature'd turn the rogues over to the proper authorities. The couatl of the story acts much more in the line of a "neutral" creature -- which would have absolutely no problem dispatching troublemakers on the one hand, while cozying up to the town's children on the other.

Well, the Monster Manual says they will attack evil people if they catch them in the act. He caught an evil thief in the act. Maybe this particular leans a bit toward LN. 83

technically, only a 'Lawful' character would turn a thief over to the authorities. Good means just that they beleive in the greater good, lawful means that they would turn people over to the authorities. Therefore, the Couatl would most likely be classified as a Neutral Good or even a Chaotic Good. Both are still 'Good', but they are not quite as worried about the laws and such, as much as they are worried about the greater good.

Prime example? Robin Hood.
