You might want to add if the short-stories can be related, as in 'several chapters of a larger one' (or pages if one chapter is more than 1500 words), or if they should be independant from each other every month..?

Good idea!

1500 word count? Hmmmmmmmmm. That's gonna be hard. Doable but hard. I'm wordy like that. Even so, I'm interested!

And to Pegadygor, I favor the 'several chapters of a larger one' approach.

I'm really starting to dig the idea of enforcing no word count, but letting the reader/critiquer off the hook after 1500 words if they like. How does that sound to you?

I'd be up for ratifying the 1500 word count limit now *and leaving it up for amendment later*. Especially if we can break up long chapters into smaller pieces.

Yeah, people are definitely able to break things into smaller pieces. I'm leaning against your suggestion in the topic to have a minimum word count, though - there are a number of people here who write very enjoyable 800-word stories, and I wouldn't walk them to inflate their story artificially.

A 1500 word count is hard. Sounds like a challenge.

Hopefully the doc doesn't still show 1500 words as the max! You're right - that does turn out to be quite a challenge. Noctivagus actually got his in at that length in April, but the rest of us were significantly over.

I like the idea of not having a strict word count, but also not making the critiquer go beyond that point. Personally, I don't think a 1500 word count limit would be a problem for me, who normally makes a chapter around 1000 words and can easily write a normal short story around the limit, but other people are more verbose than I am.

Yeah - I tend to be rather long-winded myself, but I've read some really good <1000 word stories that really didn't need to be any longer.

I think making someone cut their story arbitrarily to fit into the word count may be a mistake, but I don't want to foist heavy-duty reading assignments on people.

No min. or max on words sounds best to me really, total creative freedom and what not.

Not to mention that some more realistic writing uses slang sometimes.

4ofSwords

Slang counts in the word count, too. :) Even numbers count, if you believe Microsoft Word.

Jacquelope

Oh that's even more fun. I use Open Office to do my word counts. Is that different from MS Word?

4ofSwords

I'm not sure if they have the same algorithm - if they just count the number of characters and divide by 5, or count the spaces between words and add one a the end, or what, but either way they should come out pretty close, if not exactly the same. Certainly close enough for our purposes.

That's starting to sound good to me, too.

JQVore

yea, I'm definately going to go over 1500. I just did a word count on one of my older stories, a short one. Came out 1600 something. Yea, needs to at least be 5000 if anything.

4ofSwords

<grin> I think I'm just going to drop the word cap.

JQVore

Heh, that may make everyone happy (For the record I really didn't know how short 1500 was before I agreed to it, you live you learn.)

About the "underaged" thing. The underaged forum seemed to be largely concerning illustrated depictions of minors.

If I write a story in which a 15-year-old is unbirthed by someone, so that someone can become her new mother, does that count as a "sexual situation" for the purposes of the challenge? I just finished one and was going to submit it...

(I suppose I could do something silly and claim that any minors depicted in the story are played by 18-or-up actors. It's all just TEXT anyway...)

Hmmm.... that's a tough one.

I guess I would have to say that if it would sound sexual to someone who didn't know anything about it, then it's probably better to avoid it. The idea is to avoid having the site or any of the people in the group run afoul of the laws, regardless of the degree of sense the laws make.

If a story with that premise showed up in the group, I don't know that I would say anything about it, but if anyone else did I would have to recommend it not being allowed.

Is it critical to state that the character is 15?
