The sound of thunder woke Linda up. Tossing her covers to the side she quickly climbed from her overly tall bed and scurried down the unnaturally long hallway to that last room on the right. Opening the door Linda eyes fell on her mother who was siting upright reading a book. She had long black hair, freshly tanned skin, and wore and long white night gown. Linda Immediately ran to to her mothers bed and climbed on. She took notice at what had appeared to be a large four poster bed was instead a water bed that jiggled with every slight movement and now her mother was laying down facing the foot of the bed while still reading her book. Linda quickly dismissed it and cuddled next to her mother who wrapped her arm around the girl, but she never looked at Linda. instead she simply continued to read her book.
At this point Linda allowed her eyes to drift around the room. On the Dresser was a toy model boat that appeared to be one of those Disney cruse liners, Beside that was a Framed picture. The Photo within was a family picture of Linda, her mother, and her father. However there was something wrong with it. The faces. Her mother's and Father's faces were blurred. Like on one of those TV shows were they blur peoples faces who are in the background. Linda turned to ask her mother about the picture and to her horror, her mothers face was blurred just like in the photo. The girl could just barely make out the color of her eyes and lips. She screamed.
Linda woke up instantly sitting up and looking around franticly. Then it hit her. She was still stranded on an island and living in a cave with her aquatic protector, Sheila. It had been a few months since the whale had swallowed her when saving her life, by her guess. Already the events of the strange dream were drifting from her thoughts. It was raining hard outside the cave. Sheila had told her that very strong storms often struck the area this time of year. Suddenly a loud thunderclap caused Linda to run to her large friend and hug her snout before she knew what she was doing. This of course stirred the whale. The girl jumped back when she felt the warm wet tongue lick it's owners lips and the girls head with it! "Oh, Hello Linda. Having trouble sleeping?" Shiela asked.
"Yes." said Linda "Do.. do you mind if I sleep with you tonight?" Shiela was a bit shocked at the request. However The spring water was warm and Shiela could position herself so that the girl couldn't be dragged out into the ocean by a chance current so she saw no reason to deny the girls request.
"Sure, just let me get into a better position." Then the whale moved her body to literally block any path out into the open waters, this resulted with her body at an odd angle, which was only slightly uncomfortable, and she razed her right fin inviting the girl to her side. At this gesture Linda scampered over to Shiela's side and layed down on her back so her face would remane above the shallow water. The whale then slowly lowered her fin to wrap it around the girl like a living blanket. Within moment Shiela felt the rhythmic breathing of a deep sleep at her side. Sighing she too allowed herself to fall into a deep slumber.
The next morning Linda woke up in the warm water still under her protectors fin. Not wanting to wake the whale she scooted out from under the appendage and quietly made her way to the cave entrance. Linda loved mornings especially after a storm. The wind was warm and swift, and the beach was littered with debris for her to rummage through. Best of all was the carnage inland of the island. By this time Linda had explored much of the atoll and she would often try to find the tallest tree, or attempt to build a tree fort from the plentiful supply of bamboo. She knew that after one of these large storms she would be able to gather large amounts of the building material without too much effort along with plenty of coconuts because lets face it, fish gets old after a while. So the girl set off to gather her supplies before another storm could wash it all away.
On her little expedition Linda Linda had made her way up to a clifface that over looked the ocean. (of course, Its an atoll!) She waved to Shiela who had made a daily habit of trying to keep an eye on the girl when she went on her little trips inland. then looking down at the rocky surf she saw it. A large pink flower with a red center on a large green stem about four feet down from the top of the cliff on a small ledge. Linda had never been one to collect plants, but this one seemed to call to her as it glowed in the morning sunlight. Before she had time to think she found herself attempting to scrabble down to the plant. Shiela yelled out a warning to the girl, but she was to entranced by the plant to pay attention. As she put her weight on the small ledge it suddenly gave out under her feet. Lindaa had a breaf feeling ofweightlessnesss and gravity took it hold and pulled her down to the jagged surf. Before she knew it her fall was arrested along with a sharp pain in her shoulder. she had grabbed a hold of the flower which was now supporting Lindas weight with it roots. She screamed in terror.
Sheila, who had seen the danger even before the girl had attempted to climb down to the flower was attempting to find a path through the rocks to try and get to Linda to no avail. She swam back out to sea a bit to get a run up and jumped as far as she could onto the jagged surface. She didn't feel the pain of the rocks tearing her skin, only the pain of seeing the only other person see cared for about to fall to her death. Unfortunately the only way she could help Linda would be to catch her. So Sheila began to scoot her way through the rocks until she was under the girl. "LINDA! let go!" She cried. However the girl continued to scream either not hearing the whale or to afraid to let go. Linda didn't have much of a choice as the roots came free of the cliff. Her screams hit a new pitch as she plummeted to the earth.
Shiela opened her mouth as wide as she could manage and stuck her tongue out. Before long she felt the impact of the girl slamming into her tongue as her momentum carried her down to her throat. However Sheila resisted her reaction to swallow and instead shifted the girl to the front of her mouth and dropped her into the water. She was afraid that this experience would once again make the girl fear her, after all, she had nearly swallowed her again! however to her shock the girl was laughing uncontrollably. Had the girl enjoyed it? Confused, Sheila a bit shaky asked "Linda, are you OK?"
The girl responded "Yes, yes." she continued to laugh for a moment and said "Thank you for catching me." Now she took notice of the blood in the water and traced it back to Sheila torn skin and winced. "I'm sorry about trying something so stupid."
Sheila simply smiled at her and said "Don't worry about it, Just don't do that again. however since you seemed to enjoy yourself we should do it again sometime, just not here."
"Oh thank you, Sheila!" Said the girl, who then took in her surroundings and noticed that there was no direct way she could get back to the beach. The whale saw Linda looking around and she too saw the predicament.
"Would you like a ride to the cave?" asked Sheila
"Well, yes." Said Linda rather torn between feeling guilt over Shiela's pain, and joy at the invitation.
"Hop in." said the whale, opening her mouth and let the girl climb in before she started the painful trek back to the deep water.
