Excerpt from the Mating Rituals of Mountainback Gryphons:

"Breeding habits of the domesticated Giant Mountainback Gryphon are a closely guarded secret between experienced aviators. Much like dragons, domesticated gryphons often imprint themselves to a human companion after hatching. Specifically, male Mountainbacks will always choose a male human—a mystery which becomes clear when observing the gryphon’s unique mating rituals.

Birds have always been known as very materialistic creatures and the Mountainback Gryphons are no exception. A human companion is considered to be a gryphon’s most treasured possession—anyone foolish enough to stray between a male Mountainback and his aviator will surely meet their end underneath beak and talon. While this prevents the human aviators from mating, male Gryphons paired with a human are often highly sought after by female Mountainbacks. It is not uncommon for twenty or more females to compete for one male. Several theories suggest males paired with humans are seen by females to be dedicated and monogamous—a very rare trait among male gryphons in the wild, but a valuable instinct in females to retain bloodline.

To not interfere with the delicate ritual, all aviators are ignorant of the exact process of gryphon mating habits until both bird and man are of age. Once the male gryphon chooses his favorite, healthy, and most cunning female to mate with, he will court her by presenting forward his companion (often saturated with the males musk, much to the human’s dismay.) Overcome with flattery from this showing—giving another one’s most valued possession is the utmost acceptance of trust for the avian species—the female will gladly accept the human with vocal and animated affection.

The two Gryphons then begin a delicate feeding ritual as the human aviator is gently passed from beak-to-beak to be ingested by the female. While this may seem shocking it is not without a sense of romance; both animals will often take their time licking, kissing, and churning in appreciation—each completely infatuated as the other displays their loyalty.

The Mountainback’s human companion is sometimes understandably uncooperative during the event. The female’s natural and simple solution to this has been passed down hundreds of generations: precise contortions of her silky, dexterious tongue quickly pacify any initial protest—pinning human-against-beak as she skillfully overwhelms her prey into submission through absolute sensual overload**. This highly exotic ritual is known to last up to thirty minutes; ending as the aviator is consumed completely by the female to be stored within her crop, where he remains throughout the entire duration of mating."

**Female gryphons have mastered this instinctual ability so incredibly well; records indicate that even the most unwilling aviators have never attempted to abandon the ritual once subjected to a female’s direct manipulation.
