Indeed. She can make eyestalks to peer around corners and the like. I mean, she has other ways of sensing her surroundings but I thought this would be a fine way to depict it. Fun fact her eyes aren't eyes, they are nuclei

Not quite. I don't understand what it is I am doing, not completely. The program is painting, not me. It's covering for my deficiencies in color theory and manipulation.

I mean what do you want to do instead. Just pick a lighter shade of the color you are using instead of using the Dodge tool?
If you were painting with actual paint you'd have to use white to make your highlights, and just hope it's thin enough.
I think you are seeing problems where there aren't any.
