It occurs to me that a species with a small number would do all it could instintually to increase its number rather than reduce it like this ritual implies.
Paradox, but it logical
If you winn, you spend 1000 calories. But you have
children
If loser don't wont have your eggs, you just lose 1000 calories. Then you eat loser you get +2000 calories (2000 for mermaid, 1000 for eggs)
And for loser disadvantageous be eaten because it have chance to meet another mermaid and be winner
And if mermaid have small chance to winn (lose mani times), that logical for it say "eat me". If it calories get some predator or scavenger, or it calories get another mermaid up
