'Nnngghh....'

The numerous tugs and scrapes of thorns and branches unnoticed by her blurry vision was the only real indication that she was heading deeper into the forest, somewhere AWAY from the little farmhouse.

She was smarter than this. All the signs were there. Two beds. Two places set at the table, two chairs. She'd scoped the place out as normal, just to make sure there were no nasty surprises waiting for her. She KNEW there were two people there, and yet there was a certain overconfidence that told her two people would be nothing. She'd fought and scraped and practiced to get where she was, as good as she was. She'd eaten nagas, dragons, self-proclaimed gods, powerful sorcerers....a couple of normal humans wouldn't, COULDN'T be a problem. In hindsight, it was that overconfidence, that lack of sticking to what she knew she should do, that led to her current situation. That blinding pain in her back and chest, and the warm flow of blood that covered her arms, legs, stomach, lower back...everywhere.

It'd been a week since she'd last had something to eat, so the old, outlying farmhouse made an awful tempting target. It would be easy enough to catch someone away from the household and make them 'disappear', but she'd not had to go even that far. A quick scan of the place revealed a woman, maybe in her early twenties, digging around a garden at the side of the house, and she'd seen noone else. Normally, that would not have been enough - she'd have verified. Checked everywhere. Yet, she made too tempting of a target, and without thinking it through, she'd just...pounced. The girl had never even seen it coming, not until she was already beneath her superior weight and strength. She was alone - there was no reason not to just...enjoy her food a little bit, right?
Mmm, even now the memory of that first slow, long lick across the girl's cheek made her shudder. Slight hints of perspiration, the sort of 'rugged' taste of her garden, and then beneath all that...just the gentle, delicate flavor of her skin, so soft and smooth...
She'd been so into her 'tasting' that she never heard the soft creak of a bowstring being pulled back. Only the *TWANG* of that arrow being released. She'd dodged arrows before, countless times. She'd gotten GOOD at it. It didn't matter how good you were, though...when you didn't know it was coming.
There was no time to react. Only time for her ears to pick up the sound and swivel atop her head. She'd reacted instantly, her muscles jumping into action to avoid the threat....but too late. Far too late. She felt that flash of pain as the arrow sank into her back, followed by a sudden breathlessness, a shock that briefly made her wonder if the arrow had pierced a lung...or her heart. The flood of adrenaline that shoot through her system had her on her feet in a second, turning to face the threat - another woman, one who looked remarkably close to the first. A sister. She already had another arrow knocked and at the ready....
...and Ryla knew it.
That slight tensing of her arm. The faint twitch of her fingertips as she prepared to release. Then, it was away, quick as a bolt of lightning.
She should have been able to dodge it. She'd seen it. She knew how fast it would travel when pulled back that far on the string. She knew the reaction time was less than a second. She could do it.
Yet, her body simply would not function.
That second arrow slamming into her chest made her entire world turn black, and she struggled to maintain her footing. If she passed out here, she was dead. They'd finish her off, or she'd just bleed out - either way, her life would be over. With every ounce of willpower she had, she planted her feet and took a single look at the woman as she loaded a third arrow....and then ran. Or, staggered, she wasn't really sure. Everything hurt. The whistle of a third arrow whizzed by her head, but she ignored it and just...ran.
Now here she was. Bleeding. Hurting. Barely able to see, each breath ragged and whispy. Something vital had to have been struck, but she had no idea what...and trying to fix it would take time, if she even could. She just had to get somewhere safe first...
She'd never make that mistake again.

**************************************************************************************************************************
Helllooooo everyone! :3 Something a little less vore-related here! Ryla is good. REALLY good. Noone, though, is infalliable, even the fluffy foxy! Ryla just learns from her mistakes and moves on, and is the better for it next time! I feel like it's a nice character trait. The 'omnipotent predator' is nice....but showing they're not perfect just...adds something I can't really describe! To me, it makes them more interesting, and you don't see a whole lot of it!
So, this might not exactly be up everyone's alley, but....I wanted to get this out anyway! :3 From here, we'll get back into the more vorish fun stuff! Ryla's gonna need a good meal to recover from this one! XD

Yeah, the "overpowered, allmighty pred" can be boring, there is no challenge there any more. So, showing that they can fail is good. Nice work.

It's boring and overdone! x3 Failure just means you can root for them harder when they do succeed!

to be honest. and not in character. no lies. i see this just kinda literal. how it is. fighting for everything you got. and going down. a death many see as fitting and glorious. and i see how it goes for literally anything. paying bills. the fighting till one side wins. hungry. will you eat or wait. a drink. a meal. a product to buy. (sorry if this comment is stupid or boring. but i thought id share my thoughts)

My cynicism aside, you know what the worst part of Ryla's predicament is? Without good surgical procedures, treating arrow wounds was... gruesome, to say the least.

You know how in TV shows or movies, if somebody gets hit with an arrow or get a knife stuck in their body, they just yank it out? Bad idea. Terrible idea, in fact! The foreign object acts as a plug of sort that stems the bleeding, and removing it allows the blood to flow out more freely. Arrows in particular might have barbs on them, designed so that if you pull them out, they'll tear off more flesh and make the bleeding even worse, to the point that even if you dressed and bandaged that wound in an instant, the guy would be goner anyway. And then, of course, there's infection. Infections, especially back then, were a really big deal. Even a minor injury could turn deadly if it ever became infected. Not many people may know this, but in many ways, getting hit by an arrow was significantly worse than being shot by a gun.

The best solution to treating an arrow wound that I could find was to cut the flesh around the head and then extract it that way. But that requires another person to do it, and moreover, that person needed to be a really good surgeon. Another, much more disturbing way, was to push the arrow until it came out the other side, and then pull it out that way and sew up everything. But given that she's been shot in the chest, that's not likely to happen, and it looks to have hit bone anyway.

So, if we look at it from a very realistic perspective, unless Ryla can use some healing magic to stop the flow of blood... things are looking very grim for her right now.

Although, this does lead me to a hypothetical scenario I've been wondering for a while.

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

Yep! Arrows (or even swords/axes/maces...anything like that) were not exactly the most sterile of weapons, and the wounds left are pretty horrific. x3 That being said, not every cut or arrow wound was you getting your feet into the grave, either!

Not the first time Ryla has been shot, and likely won't be the last! How does she deal with it? Well, likely going to be some methods in 'Queen of Hearts' when the story progresses that far! Full-blown healing magic is beyond her, but infection is not something she really has to worry about. Blood loss - absolutely, and actually extracting them correctly? Oh yes.

Guess we'll have to see! x3

Thanks for the comment!

Considering that this is fantasy, we can dial realism back a bit. A super realistic story where the hero get shot in the leg or the shoulder, and then dies from the ensuing blood loss because he didn't get treatment in time, isn't very interesting to read either.

Heartless

Posted by Heartless 6 years ago Report

I think my only criticism is she still got away, Imagine if she couldnt have run even with the adrenaline and willpower or she didnt get far, and the 2 either actually left her for dead right there, or even more humiliatingly actually helped nurse her back to health. True vulnerability since Ryla would have been truly helpless for a second time in her life. More then just failing to get a meal and being injured, but total failure due to overconfidence.

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

Maybe! :3 Just didn't play out that way. Getting her butt kicked by two normal people and horribly injured was enough! Still, thanks for the input! :D Never know, might follow up on it some day! x3

Rowigrath

Posted by Rowigrath 6 years ago Report

I don't know if it's mean of me to say, but I rather enjoy seeing a predator being able to fail. It adds some realism to something that is really not that realistic, and to me that's enjoyable.

So thanks for making this, CassyInko! Hopefully Ryla will be able to get back to her usual groove soon, though~

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

Can hope! And I totally agree with you! It adds just a tiny hint of realism, and I find it quite compelling! ^_^

Glad you enjoyed! <3

Thats gotta hurt! But it brings oit rhat side that even the best of prefs (or among rhe top) can fail! Either like rhis or as menu themself D:

Also great written little story!

CassyInko

Hahaha, yes! x3 Everyone can fail, and everyone can learn! Ryla likely won't end up on the menu, but...well, her story is not always triumph. x3

It's a well drawn picture, and I love the little story which goes with it. Although while I can see the point of showing that the fox isn't invincible I can't help hope for a sequel where the fox learns from her mistake, snatches up one of the sisters and 'borrows' her for the night. Then she can give her right back after the sister and spend a nice relaxing night in a fox belly. Then she can grab the other sister and ask, "Now, where were we?"

I also don't remember her eating a self-proclaimed God, but I'd love to hear about it. Especially if it was a self-proclaimed goddess.

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

Hahah....it actually WAS a goddess. x3 Aaaaand....well, you'll likely learn more of that in 'Queen of Hearts' when I get back around to posting more of it! Of course, got alot to go there....

And who knows. XD Maybe there will be a sequel! Would be nice for her to get what she wanted...>:3

She looks like a hero in anime just about to go berserk and defeat a boss or something. Add a music like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daFi4MScfl8 and her saying something like "I will not fall this way. Never again will I be defeated like this !" :3

CassyInko

This...is some pretty great music!! XD

And yes! Ryla has plenty of determination, even when things don't quite go her way! Never make this mistake again! >:3

Exactly!

Kasra

Posted by Kasra 6 years ago Report

Ooh, poor fox! And that whole "haven't eaten in a week" thing is going to make it all the harder to recover, too.

I completely agree. A character without flaws or mistakes is incredibly boring. That's why I dislike Superman. But at the same time, I'm a big fan of One Punch Man, but I think that's because in that case his invulnerability sort of IS the flaw.

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

Yeah. XD A good meal can last Ryla a week or so, but she starts getting SUPER hungry after that! Now...looks like she has her work cut out for her until she recovers! D:

ItsSongxing

With wounds like that, I doubt she'd be able to fight back that well~

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

Heee....not the first time someone has thought that. x3 <3

ItsSongxing

Posted by ItsSongxing 6 years ago Report

Isn't the whole point of this to show that Ryla can lose, anyway~? What's the point if she's still winning, hmm?~

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

Yep! That things don't always go perfect for her! Wouldn't call this 'winning', but even in this state...she'd not be easy food! Course, dunno exactly how 'go for broke' she'd be in this situation, but...guess I'll need a followup sometime to show it! x3 Alas, that'll be some time off, as it's 'The Hunt' until I get it finished out!

Mech__Warrior

Perhaps the arrows were poisoned, might explain how badly it hurt and more than enough to stun Ryla.

CassyInko

Posted by CassyInko 6 years ago Report

They very well might have been! :O Then again, Ryla is...not as tough as Felicity. x3 Just alot better at not getting hit in the first place. This just surprised her!
