Nearby heads turned at the sudden noise and a few were just in time to see the tray of drinks crash to the sand and spill everywhere. None, however, were fast enough to spot the waiter that had been carrying them, at least not as anything other that a squirming bulge in the numbat's midsection.

It was not an unusual sight. The hotel often hired seasonal help from abroad and few of the temps had encountered numbats before and thus were unaware of just how far their tongues could reach. The minimum safe distance that most prey instinctively kept from anyone larger than them was simply not enough in this case.

Fortunately, the seasonal workers are both cheap and plentiful. The couple who had been waiting for their drinks might grumble a bit but the hotel will soon find a replacement waiter. Tomorrow morning, the numbat will return the unfortunate bunny's uniform to the front desk and pay the meager fine associated, as well as the dry-cleaning costs and the price of two spilled drinks, and that will be the end of the matter.
