I grew up with DnD and understand it like a paladin who is lawful good can do no wrong but only in the eyes of the laws of that individual's race like human for example.
A chaotic Evil character may be a demon as it has no restrictions to what it wants to do, and a Lawful Evil individual, like a vampire, is evil but obeys some laws or restrictive rules.
This is all my perspective of the scale but I'm curious to see how you interpret the scale.
