This may be an older post, but I just discovered this page, and this one of the more wierder pics ive seen xD, I think that maybe this particular Blobfish is actually an intellgent creature, maybe this person could have bribed it or tricked it to get out, at least that could work.

Fun fact: this is not what blobfish actually look like underwater, they look like pretty much any other fish, It's the skin dehydration that gets them their iconic look.

Here's a correction: blobfish actually look like this after being reeled up because they don't get the pressure that keeps them together and they die due to it. This might not make any sense but remember: we constantly live in the conditions of atmospheric pressure which also keeps us together and prevents us from just falling apart, blobfish normally live in deep sea so pulling them up makes them fall apart.

So in short: you are correct about the fact they do not look like this underwater, but the real reason why they begin to look like this is due to them getting depressurized to death.
