The question came up yesterday just what was meant by an "animalistic" Mer. Here's a sketch to show what that means.

The root Mer species is the classic merfolk, more-or-less fish from the waist down, human from the waist up. The top Mer in this image is one of these.

The bottom Mer is a leopard seal-Mer hybrid. Most Mer are perfectly happy to have affairs outside their own species and many sorts of sea mammals (and humans) have interbred with them. Typically these couplings don't lead to children due to genetic differences, but on rare occasions it does happen.

These two Mer are in fact half sisters. The top was born first to a pair of Mer lovers. The male Mer neglected his lover and she turned her attention to an unusually friendly male sea leopard with a reputation for engaging in interspecies flings. When the male Mer found out he reacted very badly, as a result of which he got a short tour of a sea leopard's digestive tract and the female Mer ultimately bore this hybrid child.

There is yet a third morphology of Mer which can only be described as a "taur". These are still more rare and generally result when a hybrid Mer mates with a normal sea mammal. The best known example is a dolphintaur, but others are known to exist.
