Bart the badger's two main girlfriends are Clara, a were-rat, and Alma, a half-orc who works at the same bar he does. Being a big feral badger, it doesn't bother him that neither is exactly the classical picture of beauty.
Due to circumstances beyond his control Bart ate Clara's brother and also Alma's sister. Neither holds it against him, but they still like to tease him about it.
(Alma's scars are a result of her previous career as an adventurer. Bart is only responsible for a few of them.)

Sucking up a bit of teasing is easier when you know someone's going to be sucking on you soon.

I suppose it is easy to say it lightheartedly when you are a rodent and have plenty spare siblings anyway?

Clara is from a big family and several of her brothers have come to sticky ends thanks to the stupid stunts they pulled. Ignatz was just the latest victim of his own overconfidence.

That’s how he met Clara all right. He knew Alma for a while before he ate her sister.

Alma and Clara could just use the sister nomming to tease him as an excuse for making half badgers. :P If he is a badger who is capable with of it with their species.

Without magic the only way he could make more badgers is with a she-badger. He's the only Awakened dire badger anyone knows about and dire badgers in general aren't common animals where he lives. He's said that sure, he'd bone a female dire badger if one was available and interested but it hasn't happened yet. Plus, he likes to be able to talk to his lovers.

And I imagine the magic that would allow him to have offspring with his lovers is either rare, illegal, or very expensive.

It’s be pretty expensive given his limited funds, yes. It hasn’t come up in any event. Everyone who jumps in bed with him is perfectly happy to just get boned, and even his regular girlfriends aren’t looking to have kids with him.

It's not uncommon for couples who can't have children due to species differences to settle down in my D&D world. There are ways around not being able to have kids. Fastpaw is married to a half-elf and runs an orphanage, for instance.
