That took a lot longer than expected... especially as the next area I added wasn't even particularly complex or unusual. Part of the problem was definitely that the amoung of free time I have to devote to this project has decreased significantly now that the world is a little less shut down due to the pandemic. Unfortunately, that means updates are probably still going to be slow from now on. Still this project is definitely not dead and I'm slowly getting closer to the story ending, at least in the patreon version.

Free players should now be able to access the Avian Lands. Patreon players now have access to the Fire Mountains, as well as major bux fixes in the jungle and temple areas. There is also a little added content in the temple sleeping area if you have a positive enough relationship with any members of your party, and two more optional boss fights that can now be found in the previous areas.

Also, the patreon version now features one enemy drawn by The Saint of Ravens whose art style looks amazing in an rpg setting. Very grateful to them for doing such a wonderful job with my commission.

As always, message me here or on FA about any bugs or glitches you find. I'm really bad at responding to messages, but I do read them all and try to get things fixed quickly.

Ooh, companion romance at last. Will there be any changes to vore dialogue in future for characters you're sleeping with? Namely when you eat/are eaten by them?

Also, as we're up in the fire mountains and nearing his village, is there a way to make Irci a pred yet? He seems the most fitting person to feed the new enemies to afterall.

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 1 year ago Report

Hmmmm… I hadn’t put that in, but that’s a very good idea and definitely something I should look at adding.

And yeah, there is a way to make Irci a pred, but it’s fairly well hidden. If you want a hint, try defeating one of the doppelgangers using willpower instead of physical attacks.

Ah, nice

Went ahead and got him eating properly, and once again I find that the prey turned preds are my favorites. Experimented with feeding him party members and he has some great scenes, the one where you feed him Pacha is definitely one of my favorites in the game so far.

That said, the character shift is a little jarring. In his initial pred scene he seems somewhat overwhelmed and not entirely convinced about being a predator, but in the other scenes I've looked at he's one hundred percent on board with eating his teammates and is significantly more confident. No traces of hesitation or conflicted emotions like Martin and Sichi still get from time to time. When he eats Pacha he even says he wants to visit her village because stoats are so tasty, (which I absolutely love by the way, real sense that Pacha unwittingly made a monster there) but it's a pretty drastic shift from the meek boy who only ate that spirit because it was preying on his own people.

Having had to fight a doppelganger a few times before getting Irci to eat it I can also say that for a minor enemy they have some interesting possibilities if you ever wanted to expand on them. Pacha herself seems to be the only one making note that she's eating someone who looks, and quite possibly tastes, exactly like she does.

Are none of the others at least a little bit eager to see what their leader tastes like? It's not exactly an opportunity that comes up very often. We know Irci finds Pacha delicious if he eats her, how would it change their relationship if he found that out beforehand? Martin and Sichi are still nervous around Pacha at times, would beating, eating and digesting a copy of her, potentially several times, change that power dynamic? Pacha herself always seems wholly confident in her superiority over her prey companions, no matter how many creatures they've eaten, would that confidence be shaken if she finds herself watching them happily churning a version of her up again and again in front of her? Not to mention that she's the one calling the shots, so you have to wonder what it says if she chooses to keep feeding a particular teammate something that looks just like her.

I know they're a minor thing, and in all probability over and done with, but I couldn't help but think of the potential of an enemy that essentially lets your party members devour their leader without it ending in a game over. Not to mention the further possibilities of your allies confusion. I know the doppelganger itself can eat you, but the idea of one of your teammates doing it accidentally because they can't tell the difference is also fun. (And if they really can't tell? Well, better eat both Pachas, just to be sure...)

BizzareBlue

Yeah… avoiding that jarring aspect is something I’ve found fairly tricky with the characters, partly because the game doesn’t keep track of how long they’ve been a predator or how many people they’ve eaten so far. With characters like Martin who get to unlock their predatory side early or not at all, I was able to set it up so his dialogue when eating an enemy slowly became more relaxed about it the later that enemy shows up in the game, but that doesn’t work well for characters who can only become a predator near the end, or if you have them eat Pacha soon after becoming a predator. I’ve toned that scene down a little now, but it’s still a little jarring.

I might have a go at adding some extra digestion dialogue for the doppelganger soon. I think it would fit better as a pre-digestion scene though, and I’m still working on a way to implement anyone other than Pacha taunting their meal. I was please that the doppelganger means there is an in-story reason (albeit a very risky one) to have your characters use the devour ally attack on Pacha.

EnderTG

Posted by EnderTG 1 year ago Report

I know with at least some of the character's it seems to track whether they've eaten their own kind or not yet. That could potentially be one way of dividing between recent and experienced preds, for Irci in particular who only started predding because of the threat to his people getting him to actually eat one of his own himself would probably be enough of a shift in position to justify even a pretty major change in behavior. That said it's not like it's a huge issue, whilst the scenes were a bit of a jump at first I still very much enjoyed them.

As for the doppelganger stuff I mostly had the predigestion bit in mind when thinking about the dialogue potential, it was Pacha wondering whether the doppelganger tastes exactly like her when she initially eats it that got me thinking on the possibilities in the first place.

EnderTG

On an unrelated note, having gone and done the optional bosses I can't help but wonder if Araya has ulterior motives for helping you if you don't end up fighting her, particularly if you've already eaten a divine being. Afterall, it's looking increasingly likely she's going to be only major power around at this rate, which would mean she could act pretty much unopposed so long as she and Pacha remain on good terms.

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 1 year ago Report

There is a scene where that gets briefly mentioned. I think if you summon an emissary while fighting one of the gods she asks Sichi if she’s getting into these fights in an attempt to wipe out all other gods.

Nice. I love little details like that, really makes characters feel more alive.

Love the wave of new content, the Avian lands are a great addition to the game, being far more open compared to the hive. i also got some bugs to report, staring with:

-the cake is a lie, when i try to eat it, everybody dies (more seriously, the game crashes every single time i've tried to use it, what is happiness even supposed to do?)

-apparently, my ally irci, always had a collar on him, according to his friend, even if i didn't go into the trader's town at all

-the self-feeding option has some bug, such as hawks not registering to have already eaten someone, even if
they are taking digestion damage, while they can still eat another person.

-feeding irci to a frog makes the game crash when it dies

-if sichi's emissary attacks a secretary bird that has already eaten a party member, the game will crash

-the "teleport-out" device doesn't exist, even after receiving it from the last sparrow

Also, entangling vines is way too powerful, it's cheap (on someone that naturaly regenerates mana, it's pretty much free), it deals % damage meaning armor or health doesn't matter, and stuns completely the enemy for possibly multiple turns!(meaning he can still do something else while the enemy already can't do anything) It's just way too powerful, at least one of those traits should be changed.

The WP are honestly underused in my opinion, there's a rarely a point where i tell to myself that it would be better to do an attack that's based on willpoints, rather then just going straight for the hitpoints.
If there was some more weakening/stun effects attached to them, if there was more options/weapons for my partners to affect it.
If it had an impact on combat even if i won't to go all the way to 0, such as making them more frail to attacks, or increasing the chance of missing special attacks, making them less effective overall(to compensate, maybe make it harder to lower them the further you go,like 20% effective when below 30wp) . That would promote it a lot more, for something other then extra text.

and with the exception of some minor-typo mistakes, everything else is fine ^^ you're making a great game

the self vore feature really suffered this update, there's also problem of duplicating worker bees, and game-crashing bee soldiers in the hive when using the feature

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 1 year ago Report

Ah... but I didn't see this post in time. I think the devour allies issue should be fixed by now, and possibly the crash with the bee soldiers as well... as I think I know what was causing those and it should be fixed now. The duplicating worker bees is something else I'll have to look into though.

BizzareBlue

Posted by BizzareBlue 1 year ago Report

Hi, thanks for catching those. They should all be fixed now, including the vines. It now lasts less long and has a chance of failure whenever used. As for happiness, it mostly modifies how much willpower your characters will enter fights with. In the main screen, the willpower bar has a little purple line on it, and after each battle the characters’ willpower drains or replenishes towards that point. Happiness affects where the bar stays (although so does the number of times they’ve eaten or been eaten by someone recently). It also affects a few other aspects of the dialogue although usually fairly subtly.

I agree, willpower could use some adjustments. Its main use is against certain bosses and enemies that have very high hp and defense. The slight other advantage is that lowering an enemies will enough will stop them from being able to use their own willpower activated abilities. Other than that, it’s sometimes worth using because defeating an enemy by draining their willpower sometimes gives different (and usually slightly better) odds of getting certain rewards from the fight.

That's the message I keep seeing when trying to download the game. When I try to "repair the download", nothing works. Help!

That’s really weird. I’ve added a mega upload link as well, so maybe try deleting the old version and downloading it from there instead?

Congratulations on reaching another big milestone! Made my entire day when I first saw this update, and again when I played it through!

As always, the new update is a dizzying disply of hard work, innovation and heart, which is more than could be said about many big-budget mainstream projects.

The thematic and mechical choice for the Fire lands is elegance itself: the opposite elements constantly vying of prominence, drowning the player in hazards and forcing a party equipment and ability mix that's balanced to deal with both, or over-specialize at their own risk.

The elemental environmental mechanics are beautifully implemented and very assertive, adding an air of urgency to what could have been another grinding grounds if designed by someone else. The blizzard and the lanterns alone could have made for a central gimmick in another game. The ice floor puzzle was incredibly exciting and gripping for me, as I'd never before seen it in a game, at least not at that degree of slipperiness; the boulder element was so much fun to curl around the rink! The castle around the frozen shrine was also a treat for its eerie emptiness, and the persistent weather peril.

The foes were absolutely wonderful! It was the perfect balance of level-appropriate menace and modest health, with a generous spread of unorthodox attacks and surprises. The high level of diversity of personalities and attitudes between those opponent types was unbelievable, and highly appreciated! The new artwork, both yours and commissioned from The Saint of Ravens, meshes perfectly with the rest of the game.

The new characters were also interesting in conjuction with the story, and as their own personalities, not to mention the important game mechanics tied to their encounters. The dragon baker's unique dimensions certainly gave me a startle when I first got into that cave. The new depths added to the hare teacher were an enjoyable twist; it appears that a Pacha on a super-predatory playthorugh would run up a sizable tally of devoured powerful spirits, demigods and straight up gods and goddesses.

The new sleepover options in the bedrooms at Araya's temple were a pleasant surprise, both in that up to that inclusion, the game had only teased around the sexual situations mostly related to vore, and because of the incredible amount of work poured into that aspect of the game, with almost more individual drawings made for it than the game had contained prior to that! There is also a rich variety of situations tailored to each character, and their relationship with Pacha, ranging from induglent to risky to sweet.
I was also grateful to see the relative character body sizes as you see it.

I'm sure I'll be stumbling upon more superb content here and there, and I've not even taken all the character combinations for a spin yet, but you have my exultant thanks for the hard work, imaginative design and clever storytelling of this great game!

P.S. Most of the common international payment options (PayPal and Ko-Fi included) are closed to me at the time, and will probably remain that way until after the war, so I'll be unable to make my contributions on Patreon.
Oddly, my Patreon access to your newer content still functions, so I wanted to ask if you'd like me to find a way to send over that money using some alternative means (there's a service called Boosty that still works with my country, apparently), or if you'd agree to wait who-knows-how-long until PayPal reopens its services and I pay it all back then.

If no way to pay you properly could be found, or if Patreon catches up and kicks my access away, I'd be okay with waiting for the free releases, of course.

Thank you in advance for your judgment on this!

Glad you’re still enjoying it so much. I was really worried that the snow storm and the combination of damage and loss of vision in with fights as well, would prove annoying (and that was after I toned down the cold damage several times while playtesting it).

The idea from the ice floor puzzle was actually stolen from one of the first pokemon games. I’m sure I’ve seen it in several other games since then, but when I was looking for any advice on how to make a that kind of puzzle work, everything I found just called it the pokemon ice puzzle, although it didn’t use bolders as far as I can remember.

Glad you enjoyed the new enemies as well, and I was so thrilled with how Saint of Raven’s ice spirit came out. I’m definitely going to look into getting some more art commissioned for the next update as well. I was kind of uncertain with how the dragon ended came out, at least in terms of her art. I really wanted to include her though so she got added despite that. And yeah, eventually it should be possible to devour one god for each element in the game.

Glad you liked those. I wasn’t totally sure about including them at first, and part of the reason I eventually did was because I wanted to include at least one drawing of each of the characters instead of leaving most of them as only a face and a tiny sprite.

It also sound like you’ve found the majority of the new content in this version. The only thing that I can think of that I added and isn’t mentioned would be that it is now possible to fight Ulm under certain conditions.

I’m also starting to planing to start merging the free version and the paid version back together soon anyway. The main story line is getting close to the end at this point and there’s not too many areas of side content left that need filling either.

Thank you for sharing the exciting designer's notes, I am always grateful to learn more about the working process behind remarkable projects like this one! Grateful to learn about the origins of the ice puzzle!

I noticed the cold damage from the blizzard was much lower than the panic-inducing visuals would indivate, or compared to the lava floor in the fire cave, but the visuals alone forced me to run towards the nearest lantern, so the environment effect is working as intended.

I admit I didn't immediately recognize the baker lady as a dragon, but it only took me few seconds to catch up -- the environment certainly offers a lot of clues, before the character introduction line flashes across the screen. Her design is in line with the humans-with-animal-characteristics style, it should have occurred to me to expect some dragon-people around the Fire Mountain.

Thank you putting my mind at ease about the future access to the game! I'll try to find a way to send you something to thank you for your work all the same when things stabilize, but I'm glad to be able to comment on the newest develoments. In the meantime, I'll follow your pointer towards the Seal Island, and keep looking for other hidden gems!

Thank you again for commenting. Reading your thoughts on the game is always really encouraging and has helped motivate me a lot to keep pushing forwards with this.

That’s a good point. I hadn’t really considered that aspect but, looking back, that is exactly how I responded while play testing even after turning the damage down.

Yeah, there will be a slightly more typical dragon getting added as well (hopefully in the next update).

There really isn’t any need to do that. Financially, things are going much better than they were at the start of the pandemic and I’m happy to be able to work on this just for the fun of it… and your comments and encouragements have really helped with that.

Happy to hear you are not starved for funds in these difficult times! Still, I wish your audience could offer you a better compensation for this sprawling storytelling and a treasure trove of engaging gameplay inventions -- and now a quite extensive artwork exposition, both your own works, and of those contributed by fellow artists.

It has occurred to be that the Sparrow Village temple serves as a bit of a preview gallery -- it is a rare game that allows for so many unique interactions with such a diverse cast of divinities!

So I've found (and eaten) the ice goddess, Ulm, Merita and araya. Are there others around in the game right now? Seems like it's alluded to a bit, but I'm having trouble finding them.

BizzareBlue

There are going to be 4 other gods in the setting, one for each element. The fire god should be encounterable in the next update, and the earth god is not going to show up directly until the very end of the main story line… although that might get added in the next update or so. I have some plans to add a side quest involving the darkness god at some point as well, which only leaves the wind god who can be found in the graveyard in Traders Town, although you’ll need a key from the river and actually fighting him requires having read the right books in the sparrows’ library. Hope that helps.

Thanks figured out how to nom kyraza. There is an awesome amount of depth to this game, I keep finding new things.
