Monstrous Adventures - Page 39 - Take Cover In The Snow! - By TrustFall - Overview
The only thing you can think of in this moment is to hide. Quickly, you move to dive forward, and you feel that this was the correct thing to do. The powder is thick and quickly slows your momentum, and the fresh blanket of snow above you offers you the feeling of safety. The frustrated cry of the eagle's failed attempt is followed by a quick flapping of wings; the enormous creature can't spot you under the snow, and with another loud cry, quickly flaps off. You wait for what seems like forever, though it's only actually a few short minutes. Carefully, you poke your head up out of the snow, only to find another shadow streaking over your position. Daring a glance up, you find that the sky is full of birds.

All kinds of birds.

They've all congregated into this area, likely in the middle of migration, or perhaps because the area if rife with 'food'. You wonder why no-one at the resort has done anything about this, but it occurs to you that in the midst of your adrenaline rush going down the treacherous slope, that you've slipped to the other side of the mountain. You can't even see the resort from here, so odds are, everyone else is safe.

Lost in your thoughts, you aren't able to spot the enormous white bird slamming to the snow, its long legs on either side of you. It reminds you almost of an Egret, actually The creature has an impossibly long neck, and its beak practically seems even longer. Realizing that your only hope (and, realistically, your only real option) is to dive back into the snow, you do just that. The powder is deeper than you expect it to be, and you get in fairly deep.

Sadly, no matter how deep you dig, it's not liable to be deep enough. You hear the fierce crunch of snow on either side of you, and the long beak of the bird rushes in on both sides. Before you can react, it's trapped you, and the enormous bird has lifted you from the snow. You struggle, but the grip it has on you is firm. Odds are, if you didn't have such thick, insulating clothes on, it may have genuinely harmed you. The bird peers around, ensuring no competition is approaching, and rapidly throws its head back, using gravity and its own energy to work you further down. There's no real opportunity to escape, though you struggle, and the further back you get, the thicker and wider the beak gets. Soon, that enormous beak has mostly surrounded you.

From your new position, you can see into the gullet of the bird. The only thing keeping you from falling in are your legs, still mostly outside. The bird attempts to down you again, but your legs catch. It releases a deafening cry of annoyance, spitting you out suddenly. The impact on the powder knocks not just the wind out of you, but your senses. The bird, realizing the obstacle, uses its impressive beak to shuck you free of your clothes. The skill in which it does this would be impressive as hell, or would be, if you weren't about to be consumed. You quickly realize as the cold air hits your naked body, you have a chance.
