Across from you, a heavyset blonde woman gives you a long stare before rolling her eyes and returning her expression to a knowing smile. The name plate on her desk says Samantha, and she is the landlady of this apartment complex. Before you can double-check the fine print you just agreed to, she snatches the copy of your new lease and directs your attention to the next document. "And last of all, please fill in one of these fields. This is just a survey for new occupants, and it let me make sure any letters you receive use the proper pronouns."
