Not to mention the easter egg of the Kings' dialogue changing if you managed to beat a Koopaling while still wearing one of the three special costumes. If you beat them with a frog suit, the king thinks that you've been turned into a frog, and offers to change you back with his wand. If you beat the koopaling with a tanuki suit, he mistakes you for an actual raccoon and asks your name, and if you beat the koopaling with a hammer brother suit, he tries to get you to give him the helmet from it, to no avail.

Something to note - what the kings were transformed into changes depending on which remake of the game you play.
So you could say that Ludwig's fall was caused by his own whim.

'scuze me, he asks to borrow the hammer brother suit entirely, not just the helmet.
