WII GAME OF THE WEEK: Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
Genre: Gun survivor

I’m sure all of you remember Resident Evil: umbrella chronicles. Gun survivor game with its flaws, but really fun overall, especially if played with a friend and with a lot of stuff to unlock and many hidden details of the RE series.

This game picks up two main RE games (Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica) to try and improve the experience of the previous games :3 so let’s go into detail!

From the graphic standpoint this game pretty much kicks its predecessor away. The visuals are way more detailed, the lightning effects astounding and more than once I just stared in awe at some of the visuals the game gave to you. The enemies are also improved a lot, modles are smoother and well-made and the use of the textures on certain enemies is impressive.

Now a few reviewers complained about the shaky camera giving you troubles when aiming. I honestly never had too many troubles shooting at things and even the hardest bosses give you a chance to hit them with an easy shot, blocking their attacks. The “shaly camera” just gives more of an immersive feeling, working perfectly with the fast pace of the game and also giving a nice cinematic feel to the gameplay experience.

The gameplay is the same old one…shoot at zombies and monsters! Aim, shoot, recharge, simple as that. Of course you’ll have a nice set of weapons to defend yourself…guns, shotguns, grenades, missile launchers…there is quite the nice choice of weapons. A nice change they made is how you can bring all of your weapons with you, with a customized set of 4 main weapons to use and to replace when you’re out of ammo or when you need something more fitting to the situation. Some of you may think about how this makes the game easier…it isn’t…I played on normal mode and after the first levels the game really knows how to make you waste your ammo, forcing you to be really careful about using them or forcing you to use all of your arsenal on a single boss.

Other noticeable changes are how the lifebar is not shared anymore…both players will have their own lifebar and plants aren’t used right away, they can be kept for later use, wich adds a bit of strategy for the healing system. The gameplay is fun and addictive, especially with a friend on your side. Shooting down hordes of zombies in a gun survivor was never so much fun in my opinion. Add the epicness of the RE series and you’re pretty much done :3

I also like how they made the levels more interactive…if you shoot at the objects on a desk, most of the time you’ll destroy them or make them fall off the desk, also revealing ammo, secret umbrella files and similar stuff.

Like I mentioned earlier I played the game on normal mode…the amount of challenge is just about right and I died quite a few times, especially against the bosses, despite having the health spray, an item that restores all of your energy once you die…problem is you have to find it while playing trough the level and certain bosses and situations will really put you in bad situations. Luckily a few well-placed checkpoints will avoid making the game frustrating (and I can’t imagine how hard mode is X3). So I suggest you to start the game either on normal or hard mode, depending by how good you feel at such games :3

Now, story-wise the game takes you trough RE2, RE:CV and an original storyline based on Leon and Krauzer, wich will explain certain things, like how Krauzer became a bad guy in RE4 (you should unlock the real ending for this one though). Due to the fast pace of the game certain sessions will be skipped, without breaking the storyline though, giving you a clear view of what’s happened in the games…the dialogues during the gameplay are great too and improved if compared to the previous game. The original storyline of Leon and Krauzer will also make certain things more clear, yet add more questions, like a good spin-off must do X3

The soundtrack is just great. The music goes along with the pace of the game and the themes of certain bosses are just plain epic, really giving you the charge you need to take down the threat in front of you…gotta look for the OST now, as I usually do X3

The game, being a gun survivor, isn’t too long, but also longer than the other titles of its genre, plus there is a lot of stuff to unlock (you’ll love the tofu mode). Secret levels, files, enemy info…it’ll probably make RE fans squeal :3

I suggest this game to the RE fans who don’t mind a different take on the series and also want a lil dive in the past games and to whoever enjoys gun survivors and fast-paced games like this…playing with a friend improves things a lot more. This title is way better than its predecessor overall, so it’s something I suggest to all of you :3
