Aztec goddess of beauty, flowers, art, crafts, dance, fertility and female sexuality.
She is one of the most important Aztec Goddesses, her name literally means "Flower Bird"
Her patronage extends to several aspects of life:
Flowers and flowering plants: she has a special connection with them as a goddess of nature
Arts and crafts; she patronizes artists and craftsmen, especially weavers.
Fertility: she patronizes both agricultural and human fertility.
Sexuality and love: she patronizes love and female sensuality.
Bloody sacrifices
As a goddess of nature, she willingly accepts offerings of flowers, fruits, agricultural produce, and objects associated with beauty.
Bloody sacrifices.
This goddess was not particularly greedy when it came to human blood, but these sacrifices were made to her because blood had the most power in it, making it the most valuable thing that could be offered to the god.
The most common blood sacrifices involved the faithful piercing pieces of their bodies and offering the shed blood to the goddess. In addition, she was offered sacrifices of animals symbolizing beauty and fertility, especially birds.
Human sacrifice.
Despite her aversion to this type of sacrifice, the goddess accepted such sacrifices.
The preferred victim was a young woman, who should combine such features as fertility and beauty. In the eyes of the Aztecs, the canon of beauty was a symmetrical figure, a proportionate face, delicate features, long, dark hair shining like obsidian, and a healthy, strong body. Courage and loyalty were also valued. Knowledge of crafts, art, or flowers was an additional asset in the eyes of the goddess.
The ritual itself was carried out in a less brutal way than the rituals of war gods such as Hotzilopotli, who was the god of the sun and war.
After the ritual, the victim's soul would join the goddess's garden as one of her maids, receiving in return for being sacrificed in a ritual that was intended to maintain harmony in nature.
