"Would you like a pair of extra hands? Mothfolk have four, scyllas have ten, but you could always do with more! A long time ago the Empire of Monenof developed the technology to harvest souls, and not just any slack harvesting, but one which maximized compliance while minimizing the humanitarian impact. People would find themselves ripped out of their daily lives from one moment to the other, and made to work as semi-corporeal servants - they could pull trolleys, clean dishes, activate levers, and even give belly rubs! They could either do that, or experience immeasurable pain followed by a complete spiritual erasure.

While the Empire of Monenof fell a long time ago to divine wrath, motivated by reasons completely unknown, the technique survived among a few, like the wandering dragon Sishou, who evidently enjoys putting a twist on the master-pet relation by letting some of her souls pull her by a leash."
