I'd imagine not. It's designed for melting rock and metal!

It doesn't have the best range; the beam's focus point is perhaps six to ten feet away from the apeture at any one point!

Ah... deliberately tuned to be that range for safety, or merely a tradeoff of power generator size?
(Sorry for the questions, I just find Sci-Fi works fascinating... 'm a writer in the genre myself.)

Efficiency and generator size. Most mining is done at a range of six to ten feet away on an asteroid =D
